SORRY FOR THE LONG REVIEW,JUST THOUGHT ID TELL IT IN DETAIL. This was the 2nd time back to Mauritius, the first time we stayed on the South side, this is on this west coast, this is still a beautiful place. We paid and booked this holiday at Le Canonnier last year April, and since then I’ve been constantly checking trip advisor to read the reviews and get an idea and a feel for this hotel. Some reviews have been great ,some not so great. Now HERE IS MY TAKE ON THE Hotel, the grounds, the food ,the staff and everything in-between. We travelled as a group of 11 people, 8 Adults,2 Kids and 1 toddler. Rooms: We requested that our rooms be linked, this meaning that they all be next to each other, since were where all traveling together , I have the toddler so we requested a ground floor room ,thankfully this was given (room 118),the rest of the group were all on the 2nd floor, (rooms 225,227.231 and 233) we were told they had upgraded us (with the toddler) from the std garden facing to a sea view because they had no rooms available on the ground facing the garden, now im not ungrateful for the upgrade, my question was ,BUT we paid and booked last year already , had they not planned for a ground floor garden facing room for us? Lots of the reviews I read stated the rooms needed TLC and were in need of a revamp, and the towels are hard, Now this is a BUSY hotel with over 700 rooms, and I’m not surprised that some of the rooms might be a bit “wornâ€, yet I nor my family had any complaints with the rooms, they are neat and tidy, the bedding was clean and the rooms spring cleaned every day, and if you want light and fluffy towels then I suggest you take your own, the towels are crisp and clean and smell great. The hotel will be going through a revamp now between May – Sept. Restaurants: This Hotel has 3 restaurants you can eat at, Le Frangipanier –this is a Buffet restaurant which has a different theme for each night, but even though the themes change the food is pretty much the same as the night before. It is also very busy, being the general eating area, so ordering drinks from the waiters whether it was cool drinks or alcohol was a pain, some drinks arrived after we had eaten and some just never arrived. This restaurant as with the others is open all around, which is beautiful, except for the flies, in the mornings when you having breakfast the tables were riddled with flies, I don’t mean ag 1 or 2 you can swat away mean you literally had to cover your food with a serviette, then eat from underneath it. It’s hot in Mauritius and HUMID, and to have 100 flies landing on you is super irritating and disgusting. When we asked about it, we were told it’s from the weather…. The Le Navigator – ala cart menu and you have to book to go to this restaurant. If you not a fish lover , then I advise you don’t go to this one, as they specialise in fish ( they will accommodate you if you don’t eat fish) offering either chicken/duck and beef, but it’s really not good. Le Serenata…… this one we were not able to get a booking at. So unfornutely I cannot comment on this one. Bar: If you are on the all Inclusive basis, which I would suggest everyone take in their package as drinks and meals are super expensive, Cocktails start from 380 rupees. The all-inclusive package allows you a wide selection of bar goods. It’s really well worth it. The ONLY person at the Bar who is friendly is KEVIN, this man needs to get a promotion and work in the customer service dept., he is great, no matter what time of the day you see him, his happy and joking. If you have read other revise you will notice his name come us a lot, and this is because his awesome. The other bar staff unless you are French are so unfriendly, it’s almost like you are bothering them when asking for something. Each night there is entertainment here which is very good. Grounds/Pool/Beach. I can’t fault the grounds, they are beautiful. There is always someone cleaning and neating up, The swimming pools are great as well, we especially liked the one that is super shallow at the end ,great for the kids, and when we were these the water was so hot, it was really great. The beach is not the best I’ve seen, the sand is hard on your feet and swimming is possible but these is a lot of coral and seaweed around. One thing that is a major irritation is that there are A LOT of sun loungers on the beach ,yet no matter what time you go to the beach each chair has a towel over it, but there is not enough people on the beach to fill the chairs. This is very unfair, and to accommodate the guests the hotel should devise a plan for this. Spa They have a wonderful spa that is set in a giant tree, it is quite beautiful. We had an hour full body massage which was awesome. The ladies are very friendly and make the whole experience very relaxing. Baby room The hotel has nice baby room, where you can get fruit ,yoghurt and milk. They also have a Toddlers menu, you can just order the food beforehand. Excursions The Agent who you book through, will normally want to see you the day after you arrive to offer you excursions etc. Its always more convenient to book with them directly but they are really over priced, a catamaran trip tp Aux ile cerfs with the agents ( well with ours ) was 3600 rupees a person, the following day we went into town ( the town is 5 mins from the hotel, and busses run all the time and is 18 rupees ( one way) compared to taking a taxi with is 500 rupees (return) ,just to find literally every second shop offering exactly the same trip[ frp 1300 rupees. So please rather shop around. Over all it was very enjoyable, and will promote it anyday, I m sure once its been revamped its going to be even better.
"Fantastic place, amazing staff"
I stayed at Canonnier for 9 days and loved the place. It is located in a beautiful spot surrounded by green tropical gardens, beaches and ocean. It is big enough so that it never feels too crowded or busy and the lovely staff take time to get to know the guests making sure you feel at home. I stayed here just before the resort closed down for renovations and can't wait to see what it looks like when they re-open in a few months time. There were lots of families here and people of all ages which gave this place a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
"An unforgettable stay! (in a good way, too)"
Our stay at the Cannonier was one of the best I've ever had - I loved absolutely everything about Mauritius and this hotel. With large, clean pools, great service and access to a lovely beach it was everything I could ask for. Even though the room was quite basic it was alright - very clean and spacious with comfortable beds. Right after we checked in, we realized that we had been given a room with double bed, which was unacceptable for us. It took the staff thirty minutes to fix the problem. Maybe I had been very unlucky up to that point but these sort of problems would always turn out to be very time - consuming and problematic for the hotel staff(s) - but not at Cannonier. The pools were also clean and quite vast with very nice service at the pool bar. All the staff were amazingly kind and very helpful. Upon our arrival the hotel manager took us to lunch which was being served at that moment and showed us some mauritian specialities which gesture I found very kind and it made us feel really welcome. Perhaps the greatest thing about this hotel is the food they serve - a culinary journey around the world. Great pizza, fantastic salads, seafood, amazing mauritian food. As a Pole I usually dislike what hotels serve for breakfasts (croissants and bacon are not really my thing) - but here, it was alright. I never left the restaurant hungry, not even in the morning:). I loved the beach, which was not very big, but nonetheless heavenly. I spent hours and hours merely staring at the palm leaves above my head, really understanding why Mark Twin praised this amazing island so much. On a practical note - shoes are a must if you want to swim in the ocean - the bottom is rocky and there are... well, animals there:-) I will return, one day, that is for certain.
We took our little boy of almost 6 years on his first trip overseas, a family vacation. Le Cannonier was an ideal destination, providing great service, Mauritian cuisine and nightly entertainment... even allowing the kids to join after the show..., what a stunning location! Sunsets were absolutely awesome with some light showers of rain late evenings. Water sports facilities and snorkeling ideal for kids. We loved the surroundings, the beach and the excellent service! The waiter, Adil, was the highlight to excellent service for us during our stay. He introduce us to the "Sectret of Mauritius" the hotels' own flavoured Rum - L'Amitiè. So smooth and nice. Brought mom a "Blue Lady" and for our little boy his very own Chocolate Milk Coctail. His firtst Coctail. Even offered to take family pictures with our own camera... Thanks Adil! Would be a pleasure to return after the renovations.
