"One of the Best Places I've Been"

Just spent 13 nights here, absolutely love it. Amazing stretch of beach and it's a quiet resort, easy going. Everyone who worked there was nice and the food was of a high standard. I can't find any fault, it's super clean and very well looked after. We walked along the beach as far as we could each way and there are hotels all along, not one of them looked nearly as nice to us. Sugar Beach, which is the sister hotel, seemed a bit too glitzy for us but nevertheless stunning and I hear the food is also good there and you can use their restaurant. We didn't because we ended up being too lazy and we were very happy with Thatches in La Pirogue. Planning to return next year.

"Holiday "

La pirogue was an amazing hotel. Stunning views, Awesome service. Special thanks to to "Prayag" from the restaurants. He looked after us, such a helpful, kind man. Food was excellent too. Definitely recommend this hotel . Many thanks for making our holiday so memorable. Mrs & Mr Oliver

We have just returned from a fortnight at this beautiful hotel in a stunning location. We chose October as the temperatures are warm/ hot but not unbearably humid. Even the locals think December is really hot. Lots of sunshine and only one shower in the two weeks. The hotel is celebrating 40 years this year and it must be the most attractive of all the hotels on the island. (The first built in Flic and Flac and second on the island) The rooms are in pairs in lovely, traditional, thatched, stone 'bungalows/huts'. They are roomy, have plenty of storage, a fridge/minibar, hairdryer, TV, air con, tea and coffee making facilities, and a very comfy bed. The bathroom isn't the most flashy up-to-date hotel bathroom we've ever stayed in but there is a separate shower and bath and again it is very roomy and clean. Because the rooms are all located in these single storey bungalows you only have one neighbour, so we were not disturbed by fellow guests. Each bungalow has a small deck with table and chairs over-looking the wonderful gardens-mostly, majestic coconut palms. The rooms are built in several horseshoe shaped arrangements with a supplement for those nearest the beach. But even the standard ones have a glimpse of the beach and sea through the palm trees as you step out your door. At sunset watch out for the fruit bats, amazing to see them flying around the trees. There is a large restaurant located in the main building where breakfast is served and an evening buffet each night. There is a fish restaurant which you can book in to eat at night and the beach bar and coconut cafe offer lunchtime snacks. All the food was fabulous with a massive choice of starters, main courses and desserts. There is also a huge choice of drinks available with your meal or through the day from the beach bar, coconut cafe and blue bar. But the wonderful addition of a 'cocktail van' that 'pootled' around the site all day was definitely our favourite; you can stop it and have a cocktail made up for you, around the pool, on the beach or on your deck! The beach is glorious-pale fine sand and turquoise coral lagoon, lined with palm trees and just a stroll through the gardens from your room. There are plenty of sun beds available and if you're up early enough you can grab one under the thatched parasols on the sand. Beach towels are provided each day. I would advise sand shoes as there are lumpy bits of dead coral especially if you swim out further from the shore. The water doesn't get deeper than about chest height and you can walk/swim out to live coral and snorkel to your hearts content. The waves are crashing over the reef a little further out but there's plenty of fish to see at a safe distance. (Although we did go snorkelling on one day and there seemed to be strong currents around!) Wait around into the evening to watch the sun setting over the sea, spectacular. The infinity pool is very clean, and meanders around the bar areas. It never got crowded and was surrounded by the garden on one side, with the infinity edge next to the beach. There are water sports available; kayaking, pedaloes, sailing boats, paddle boards, windsurfing, glass bottomed boat, snorkelling trips, many of them free if you are all inclusive. (We went out to swim with dolphins, and although we saw plenty, the sea was a bit rough, so we didn't get in the water.) We also enjoyed the crazy golf & table tennis. We didn't go into the Spa so can't comment on that. We went on an organised trip to the north of the island and hired a car another day and explored the south on our own, which we preferred. (Mauritians drive on the left!) The island has some stunning scenery, natural features and fields of sugar cane but don't expect quaint picturesque villages and towns! The urban sprawl is not an attractive feature of the island! You can take a local bus or a taxi into Flic and Flac if you want to do a bit of shopping. We went into Port Louis on our trip north and visited the market where you are hassled by the stall holders to buy! We ended buying a few things from the beach hawkers as it was more leisurely! There was evening entertainment each night which included some very good traditional dancing. Our room was fairly near the bar/restaurant area so could hear the base beat back in our room, as everything is outside. It stops at 11.00 and then it was very peaceful. So if you don't want to hear the pulsing beat, ask for a room away from the main building, although you will have further to walk for your meals! By far the best aspect of our holiday was the fantastic personal attention we received from the management who went out of their way to make sure we celebrated our Coral Wedding in style and the brilliant staff around the hotel. They were ever cheerful, helpful, chatty, polite and nothing was too much trouble. When the room was cleaned each day, frangipani flowers were arranged on the bed, the waiters pulled out your chairs for you and placed your napkins and often carried your plates back to the table, the bar staff worked very hard but always with a smile. Thanks to Gopee in the beach bar, Mario in the coconut cafe, who both loved to chat with the guests. ( English is the official language in Mauritius but French is spoken by everyone as well as French Creole). Thank you to Jerome for making us feel so welcome and ensuring we had a wonderful time. And a big thanks to Sakil (and Vijay) on the 'cocktail van' for always being there and being so friendly. The hotel has a very high percentage of returnees each year and I understand why, it is a perfect place for a holiday, (and it seem, a wedding +/or honeymoon!) I would love to return to this paradise.

"Lovely Resort but Food Poisoning and Poor Management"

Resort itself was beautiful, sandy beaches, pristine grounds very tidy and well presented. Lovely setting and very well maintained. The rooms were spacious, clean and tidy, we had an older cottage but still great, we noticed a lot were being redecorated and re-furbished. Swimming pool was not heated so freezing cold when we went in October. Made my way to the HOT TUB which was not turned on so freezing too! Perhaps it should be called the ice tub! Again really well maintained and nicely done pool area though. Lot of flies about especially when you ate at the beach bar, we noticed that this wasn't a problem at the sister hotel next door so perhaps a few fly traps are needed? The staff were all great, friendly and helpful, however the management were unhelpful, aloof and need some customer service training! In short they really didn't understand problem solving or going the extra mile. When we asked for assistance or help they simply fob you off. For example when I was in the room suffering food poisoning my wife stayed in and ordered room service and asked for a pizza. They informed her that it was 5.08 pm and pizzas were only cooked until 5 pm. My wife said that we had the list in front of us stating 5.30 was the latest we can order pizza. They just said they wont do it......really petty and unnecessary especially bearing in mind why my wife had to have the room service! See below regarding further "Jobs Worth" attitudes by the management. Real shame as the rest of the staff were great. Food poisoning meant I spent 2 days in the room. Can only put it down to the spare ribs I ate one lunchtime in the hotel restaurant. We had not eaten anywhere else so they clearly have an issue. Generally the buffet food was average at best so we tried to book the restaurants. Talk about making life difficult! You have to speak to the restaurant concierge, disorganised, uninterested and complete liars! You do not know if they have actually booked you, you have to wait for them to send you a voucher that comes through your door. If you don't get a voucher- you didn't get a table! They messed up twice saying we were booked and then didn't/forgot to send the voucher which meant we had to chase them so we could eat at the restaurant. We did not get booked to any of the three restaurants available in the 2 hotel on several occasions even when plenty of notice was given. We were "all inclusive" so I guess they didn't want us taking a up tables that other guests would pay for? My wife had a birthday whilst we were out there so I explained to the restaurant concierge woman that they had messed up twice before so was there any way they could try and get us a table the next day as it was a special occasion. They failed to deliver! No apology, No solution, No communication.....No caring.. It should have been an easy way to impress a guest who had already been messed around, given food poisoning and was generally fed up, to get them back on side. NO CHANCE! Went on a couple of trips - North and South day tours, pretty good, nice tour guides and good to see other parts of the Island but they seemed expensive for what you actually did. Over all if you were comparing La Pirogue to the Maldives, it would be Maldives every time for me, less crowded, better food, great management and they really know how to give excellent customer service. La Pirogue is really nice but not in the same league.

"La Pirogue perfection"

We have just returned from our honeymoon at La Pirogue and it was perfect! From the moment we arrived we were made to feel completely welcome, relaxed and as if nothing was too much trouble. We were in a refurbished garden room which was beautiful, the bed was extremely comfortable, cleanliness was amazing and the bathroom was fantastic. We were on an all inclusive basis which was wonderful, we have been to resorts before including the Maldives where we have booked all inclusive and then found that there were additional costs for eating at certain restaurants, this isn't the case at La Pirogue. We were able to eat at all restaurants subject to booking and also could eat at Sugar beach next door which was fantastic. La Pirogue is situated on a beautiful stretch of beach with crystal clear waters and beautiful views. We were able to use pedalos, canoes and paddle boards free of charge and we also went on a catamaran trip ( cost about £50 each) which I would thoroughly recommend. Overall we absolutely loved our holiday and were also treated to a lobster, seafood meal as part of our honeymoon package as well as sparkling wine and fruit in our room on arrival. The staff are wonderful and can't do enough for you, always smiling and cheerful even though they are at work! Thankyou so much to you all for a fabulous , memorable holiday, we will definitely be back. Tracey and Tony Strain Oct 2016
