Over Cañon Village

Decided to sleep over at Gondwana Canyon Village on our way from South Africa back home to Grootfontein in the north of Namibia. As we are members of them as we were promised good value for money and discount prices, we previously stayed at the Canyon Roadhouse for, at first, one day, but with our new Gondwana membership cards, we could stay for 1 more night. What a nasty surprise we got when the rooms was no more 685 per night, but almost double at N$1080 per night and N$288 per dinner per person - discount was already deducted from our membership cards!? The place is really lovely and the welcoming with ginger beer a refreshing idea, but after that everything was not as pleasurable: nobody carried our baggage to the room and at that price you really make it difficult for your own countrymen to support you in your business, our Gondwana cards are worthless as at that price, you can stay at any place as pricy as you!
We only got to spend one night here but wish we could have spent two. The camp is in a beautiful desert setting. The staff was extremely friendly. The rooms are large and comfortable with air conditioning. There isn't a refrigerator in the room. You can't park right by your cabin but there are paved sidewalks on which to roll your bags. There is a pool. Breakfast included scrambled eggs and bacon on the buffet. Wifi is only available at the dining/reception area and is not always available which has been the norm in every bush camp we've visited.
"Disorganised and unfriendly"
Stayed here for one night and found the welcome very unfriendly. The staff in the restaurant were nice but didn't know if it was possible to have vegetarian food (half the buffet was veggie!) and weren't familiar with items of the drinks menu. They also seemed a little distracted. I didn't feel welcome here. It's a shame because the rooms are lovely and the overall look of the place is fabulous.
"Poorly run resort in great location"
Mostly friendly staff, although some were quite inhospitable and all seemed in need of further training. A change of management would seem to be highly desirable. Mediocre food. Toilet was blocked in my chalet.
"They have a story to tell"
What a place and what a success story. I was very impressed by what has been created in the middle of no-where. Staff is very friendly and eager to assist. We were three couples that traveled to Gondwana to visit the Fish River Canyon. The Village is close to the canyon with clear road signs showing the direction. On arrival at the Village you are swamped by porters that carry your luggage to your room and at reception you are met by a friendly receptionist that do the necessary paperwork in a few minutes. The chalets are beautiful, clean and spacious. Large bed and surprisingly good shower. We had sometime to spend at the pool where they run an honesty bar. At six there was a walk to a look-out point to watch the sunset with complimentary drinks from Village management. Our guide was Hosea, one of the barmen at the Village who had the task of telling us more about Gondwana, its plants, animals and people. It was a great experience and also a chance to meet some of the other guests. I thought that both the dinner and breakfast buffets were great. The waiters were quick to assist and very helpful. For me a definite recommend.
