"Fantastic hotel, amazing holiday! "
After what seemed an epic journey from Edinburgh via Amsterdam and Nairobi, we arrived at the Ocean Paradise resort in the early hours of the morning. Thankfully, check in was quick and efficient. Our room was lovely, cleaned everyday (usually in the morning), and bed turned down every night. Mosquito repellant was also sprayed in the room every evening and the mosquito net draped carefully around your bed. The grounds are lovely, well maintained, and the pool area relaxing with a laid back atmosphere. Pool always clean. The beach within the grounds and beyond is stunning, but full of beach boys and unauthentic Masai desperate to sell you tours, jewellery etc. I get that everyone has to make a living, but it can be pretty invasive when you just want a quiet walk to explore. The general manager Mr Bernd Brantd introduced himself on our second day there and was very approachable. He was attentive, visible, always on hand to deal with any issues (though we had very few), and always took time to ask how our day had been, or to give us advice about the area, local restaurants etc. Eli Botes Guest relations manager was wonderful, can't thank her enough for everything she did for us. She was always on hand to deal with anything, to give us advice/information about the food, hotel, and the island, and was always so polite and attentive. She made us feel so welcome from the outset. The food was great. We were all inclusive. Lovely buffet selection every morning at breakfast. Enjoyed a la carte lunch everyday. The dinner buffet at night was excellent. We were introduced to Sumesh, the head chef whom we thanked personally for the amazing curries freshly prepared by him and his staff. We loved them Sumesh! Staff around the restaurants were so friendly and the service was for the most part very good. The service at the bars (particularly the pool bar) could be slow at times sadly, even when quiet, and we did have to shout a few times to attract the attention of bar staff who did not always appear to be busy. Did 5 dives at Mnemba Atoll (kichuani, small wall, wattabomi). Plenty to see. Lots of reef fish like Angel Fish, Blue Spotted Rays, Black Snappers, Groupers, Red Tooth Triggers, Flounders, Octopuses, Leaf Fish, Scorpion Fish, frog fish, turtles etc. I booked up through the One ocean dive centre on the hotel grounds. Did my advanced open water with Craig Jessop. Thanks for the experience Craig! The staff on the boat were so friendly, and the 45 minute speed boat trip to Mnemba was full of fun and laughter. We did a trip to Stonetown too, well worth a visit. We had a private guide who took us to the old slave auction site/slave dungeons etc, so much history attached to the town I could have spent a week wandering around. Great atmosphere with an eclectic mix of Indian, British, Arabic and Portuguese influences. We did Prison Island too, and a tour of the spice farms. All well worth the money we paid. Overall a wonderful hotel, and one I would definitely return to. We had a few minor gripes. Our mini bar in the room wasn't stocked with Diet Coke despite persistent requests. Eli (guest relations manager dealt with it though). The light outside our room wasn't working, and we were upstairs (room 184). I was quite fearful of falling in the dark down wooden stairs. We asked reception a few times to rectify the situation, to no avail. Again, when raised with Eli, it was quickly dealt with. These were minor issues however, and didn't detract from the warm wonderful service overall. I loved this hotel, the hospitality, and would definitely return again if I ever went back to Zanzibar. I would also recommend it to anyone. Thank you to all the staff and management who made our holiday so special.
"Second part of our honeymoon"
After an amazing and crazy wedding at the beginning of November and then 2 days after travelling throughout Kenya on a 10 day safari, the Ocean Paradise was EXACTLY what we needed. We arrived in Zanzibar on 16th November for a 6 night stay. Zanzibar airport is an attraction in itself, we arrived at the beginning of their high season so it was absolutely rammed and you're like caged animals in a tiny little building queuing an hour for a visa, then through just the one single conveyor belt security that they have - this alone leaves you needing a weeks holiday, especially in 30 degree heat without a single air con unit around! You are then hounded by LOADS of porters outside the airport to take your luggage to your transfer vehicle, so be prepared. We asked our transfer driver to stop at 1 of the 4 ATM's in Stone Town which he happily did for us to withdraw cash, the Barclays didn't work so we went into the bank next door to it but beware it only dispenses in 10,000 shilling notes but upon arrival Ocean Paradise were happy to help us change some of it into smaller denominations for tipping the porters. When you enter the gates to the resort, the drive up the beautiful entrance makes you think you found a slice of heaven, which you have. The views upon entering Ocean Paradise takes your breath away!!! The elevated reception area looks out over the resort, over all the palm trees straight to the ocean, stunning! You're given a cold towel upon arrival and directed over to take a seat before they brief you on your stay. Generally we found reception very helpful, however sometimes the communication can be a little difficult given the language barrier. Our hut in the gardens was stunning, hut 126, plenty of space, good air con, decorated culturally so don't expect modern, with everything you could possibly need for the duration of your stay. We had a lovely young guy come to our room with fresh fruits and the most beautiful flower arrangement, I'm not sure if this was as we were on our honeymoon or if everybody got those flowers but such a lovely touch. Wifi in the rooms was an issue, you have to pay $15 dollars per device, luckily we got this included as it was our honeymoon - I wouldn't recommend paying for this otherwise. VERY slow and hit and miss, but not an issue really, we only used it because we got it free. The rooms are lovely and clean and serviced twice a day, once in the morning/early afternoon for a thorough clean with beautiful towel and flower arrangements left on the bed and then again in the evening to put down the mosquito nets. We arrived early in the afternoon so we unpacked and went down to the private beach to catch some afternoon rays, sun loungers are aplenty but the ones under the umbrellas go very early in the morning with people putting towels down so if that's what you want then get out there early before breakfast - we wasn't too fussed though. The sand is beautiful and white and very picturesque, although we didn't actually venture out past the fencing of the private beach as the vendors on the beach are a real nightmare, the minute you walk past that fence and the security you're hounded by one guy then a couple of meters along another 2 guys and this goes on the whole time you're on the beach with them trying to sell you trips, goods etc. I know they're trying to make a living and it's a 3rd world country but it's very intimidating, pressuring and uncomfortable, being a luxury resort this is something that should be done away with. We were approached by a representative of the resort whilst we were sunbathing and were given honeymoon treats including complimentary spa treatments and a truly amazing private 4 course dinner for an evening of our choice - again, a lovely touch. Food - breakfast is lovely, so much choice with every breakfast option you could possibly want, with coffee offered regularly throughout your meal. Although the trek up and down all the stairs every morning is arduous ha ha! We had lunch at the pool bar pretty much every day, the waiters and waitresses really are a credit to the resort, particularly Omary, what a lovely, polite and professional young man!! Lunch was lovely, always well cooked and a good amount to chose from having something different every day we was there. Dinner is also lovely, a different theme every night including Italian, Ocean, Swahili, ect ect. Again, plenty of options and there is something for even the most pickiest eaters - the desserts were probably the main culprit behind my weight gain!! Delicious. A live band every night who are brilliant! And some other live entertainment on selected nights. Our private dinner was amazing, candlelit, our own waiter, complimentary sparking wine, 4 courses and just a perfect final night. You can have lobster however we opted for the roasted chicken. Overall, Ocean Paradise ensured we had a truly beautiful end to our honeymoon and if the airport and flight wasn't so long then we would absolutely love to return. This is a no cash resort so please ensure before leaving you leave a nice tip in the box at reception as this ensures that even the staff behind the scenes along with the customer facing staff all get something. They all work so hard to ensure that we have a lovely stay and are a real credit to the resort.
We have stayed in this hotel in December 2016, half-board service. Briefly, hotel is excellent. Very good beach, pool, landscape. Nice food for breakfast, excellent for dinner. Two very small downsides are rooms that need refurbishment and slow internet. Beach is white sandy. Very large. You can go swimming only on high tide. In reality, half day you can go in the water and the other half not. On the low tide there is no water at all. Latest moment to go swimming is at least 2-3 hours before low tide. In the hotel you can find high and low tide tables so you can organize yourselves. Attached you can find tide table for December. Hotel Sun beds on the beach are comfortable with umbrellas making nice shade. You will always find spare places. Beach is focal point also for locals. Very live and frequented. Locals are friendly and polite people. Highly advise to interact with them. Bye local crafts in nearby shops. Go to the trips with boys from the beach. It's safe and you will get more than you paid for. We went to Stone Town and Spice plantation. Simon from the beach organize everything for us. It was great! Attached is a list of attractions nearby with indicative "beach" prices. Pool is nice, clean, with pool bar. Nice landscape. There is also dive shop by the pool which I highly recommend. Wonderful and professional people. Go to snorkel or scuba with them. Breakfast was served in panoramic restaurant. Choice is good. Dinner... Every dinner was happening. Thematic evenings with delicious food with live band every evening is unforgettable. Dinner was served form 7.30 and I highly advise to go early so do not miss excellent music. No restaurants nearby on the beach for lunch but hotel prices are reasonable. Daily and evening entertainment contains something for everybody. You will find lot of different daily and evening entertainment. Sports, village tours, Swahili lessons, movies are in everyday program. You can also take shisha in bars. Last, but most important, the thing that makes this hotel truly unique and different from others is Staff. Staff is amazing in this hotel. Thanks everybody.
"Beautiful resort but service could be improved"
We visited as a family of 4, together with other friends. We found the grounds to be superb, the architecture very nice, the rooms well designed and appointed. Food was tasty, with a lot of variety and themed nights for dinner. The beach is very nice although there was quite a lot of seaweed at high tide. The reef walk the hotel offers at low tide is definitely worth it (bring water shoes or rent there). The pool is great, with a shaded area by the immersed bar. There are lots of pool beds by the pool and on the beach and plenty of shade. Staff are friendly but their English is generally lacking which can lead to frustrating conversations. You can see that the hotel is having difficulty attracting staff who can meet expectations of sophisticated international travelers. I have lived and travelled in Africa so was not taken aback; but several in our group were. Wifi packages need to be purchased but don't work very well. So do not expect the service you would get in the Caribbean or other tropical resorts. Best option is to get all inclusive package as extras are quite expensive. Spa is very nice. Consider snorkeling on nearby reef and day in Stone Town. All in all, a wonderful place that you will enjoy is you just go with the flow!!
"Great time "
We had a great time at the pools. Water was lovely and warm and it closes at 10 pm at night which was good for us after a busy day walking around Napier and visiting friends. There were a lot of people there from different nationalities. Great time.
