"Stay at Aan de Oever Guesthouse"
We had a very enjoyable stay at Aan de Oever. The accommodation, setting, breakfast and service were excellent and we would definitely return. The historic walking guide to Swellendam they have produced is also very interesting and well worth doing.
What a delightful stay. The room with balcony is superb! The service was impeccable. Good Restaurants within walking distance. The hiking trails in Swellendam are excellent. Wish our stay could have been longer.
"Very nice guesthouse"
Aan de Oever is a very nice guesthouse, in a quiet part of Swellendam. We had a beautiful room on the second floor, with great views. Some small gestures show that the owners think of everything: our car was washed in the morning while we enjoyed the breakfast buffet, and when we checked out we got muffins for on the road.
"A beautiful Guesthouse"
Our family of five adults stayed here for only one night while on a long road trip covering 2675 miles of South Africa and we wish we had been able to stay a while longer to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the gardens and pool area next to the gentle Koornlands river. Arriving quite late in the day, we were warmly welcomed by Carol or Fienie (sorry not sure), the very attentive and friendly owner/manager who showed us around all three rooms that we had booked and then kindly made a reservation for us at a local restaurant. We all liked the quite quirky, traditional Cape Dutch style rooms and mine in particular was great with a large free-standing bath as well as a separate shower. We were advised that it was safe to walk to our chosen restaurant, some 5-10 minutes from the guesthouse, literally just down the road and around the corner. All the rooms were well appointed and had homemade cake, a refrigerator and satellite TV. The gardens are tranquil and attract lots of local bird life, providing a wonderful dawn chorus and the rising sun shining on the nearby Langeberg Mountains was a sight to behold, as was the beautiful night sky far from big city light pollution. Swellendam is a pleasant town with a lot of very nice houses and a decent main street worth exploring, coupled with a reasonable selection of restaurants to choose from. In the morning we enjoyed a fresh, cook to order breakfast with plenty of choice as well as a breakfast buffet of fresh fruit salad, yoghurts, cold meats and cheeses, etc. It is worth noting that the reception closes at 6 p.m. and from this point you only have access to your own room and no other facilities, not even a sitting room and there are no staff on site after 6 p.m. though there is a contact telephone number should you encounter any problems. That said, I highly recommend Aan de Oever either for an overnight stay or for a few nights in order to explore the local area.
"overnight in swellendam"
Carol's warm welcome set the tone for this very enjoyable overnight stay in charming Swellendam. Carol had "upgraded" our room (better than turning right on an international flight) and we were pleasantly surprised by the size and comfort of the Guinea Fowl room. I was particularly impressed with small details - one did not have to find a plug point under the bed and crawl around to use the hairdryer for example -as there is a decent size adaptor easily accessible. Breakfast deserves special mention - fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. The restaurant recommendation too was spot on, highly recommend The Old Gaol. Many thanks indeed to all at Aan de Oever.
