We visited Bushmanskloof as part of a trip in South Africa to celebrate our 50th birthdays. It was a nice drive from our previous destination on the coast. I wasnt really sure what to expect but we had a lovely stay. It is a kind of safari lodge although not big 5. All inclusive which catered very well to my non dairy and non wheat requirements. The rooms are classic and traditional with a hunting lodge style. There are several pools dotted around and a large dining area. It is very beautiful and you can go on morning drives and evening drives and we did both. I wasnt really expecting that but it was fun and interesting. The guides are great. There are also pre historic caves to visit on a walk which have cave paintings. It is truly a magical and different place and can thoroughly recommend. You can do as much or as little as you please.
"Paradise in the bush"
Bushmans Kloof is situated 8 Kmart from the road, deep in the bush in an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is plenty of local game to see, frequently at very close quarters. The game ranges across various species of buck to ostrich, aardvark, the large African shrew, zebra, wilder beast, dassie and terrapin in the lakes. There is plenty to do from hiking, game drives, visiting some of the huge number of Bushman cave art sights on the reserve, dinning by candlelight in a gorgeous Shepard’s hut deep in the bush to canoeing, swimming and and picnicking at the lake. There are also exceptional spa facilities with a wide range of treatments. Excellent food served in a fabulous dinning room and on terraces with great views. The lodge has various lovely cool fresh water swimming pools and a large warm water pool. The rooms are spectacular, beautifully furnished and decorated. There is underfloor heating for the winter, grand bathrooms and high pressure water for the showers. Some bedrooms, perhaps all, have open fire places for the winter. All have excellent air conditioning. The welcome and service are exceptional. A truly wonderful place to enjoy nature, relax and, yes, to be pampered. A picnic by the lake is highly recommended.
"Perfect and personal"
Bushmans Kloof is easy to reach on a tar road, from gate to lodge there is a good farm road. On arrival a welcoming team was around and by the time I got to my room every staff member seemed to know me by name. Personal touch is added by a handwritten welcome letter in the room. Rooms have luxurious finishes but the standard room is not too spacious. But did not worry me because the lodge is surrounded by beautiful nature and offers different hiking trails. The nature drives done by experience rangers really add value to the stay. Kitchen team is doing a brilliant job and serves delicious treats to fine dinning in the evening.
We were fortunate enough to stay at Koro Lodge in the grounds of Bushmans Kloof with our dedicated host, chef and other amazing team members, which gave us the best of both worlds: privacy and access to the wonderful facilities of the retreat. Life-long memories were created at Brushmans Kloof - amazing scenery, beautiful wild-life and a new level of service from Nick and the team. We will be back. Just Amazing!
"A Peaceful oasis set in a remote and stunning location"
We drove from Cape Town to 'The Kloof ', an easy drive on good roads passing through only a handful of villages & towns en route. The closer you get to The Packhuis Pass the magnificent rock formations come into view winding either side of the road, the scenery is really stunning. After passing through the main gate onto the reserve you drive on a twisting dirt road through a valley between more craggy rock formations, then suddenly a beautiful oasis of flora and greenness comes into view as you drive past the staff village into The Kloof. We were warmly greeted by the staff, shown around the beautiful property and then on to our room, which was amazing, some of our clothes had already been hung up, a huge very comfy looking bed dominated the room, and there was a large ensuite bathroom with gorgeous underfloor heating. The retreat offers various activities, you can either partake or just relax. Game drives are on offer twice a day, the morning drive being relatively short which is designed to visit some of the San Rock art paintings and see a little of the reserve. The afternoon drives head out after afternoon tea, and stay out until around 7pm, having sundowners and the hope of seeing some nocturnal animals. You can also do walks, hiking, canoeing, fishing. There is a lovely Spa offering a variety of treatments, and 4 pools (only one of which is heated!!) I had a couple of treatments during our stay, one down at the Gazebo which overlooks the beautiful landscape, and the other at the spa, which is comfortable and serene. Staying at the Kloof is a delight, it ticks all the boxes. The delicious food figures highly, always a great selection and very definitely plenty of it! A great selection of wines too. We followed one of the paths on a bushwalk one morning before brunch, this was great, an easy to follow route marked with stacked rocks. We saw a Klipspringer, birds of prey, several lizard's, and some rock daises during our trek. As there are no predator animals it is safe to walk around without a guide unlike most African reserves. The next day our guide took us to Crystal Pools, quite a hike this one, climbing up into the rocks, through a tunnel (quite tricky this bit) but what awaits is worth the climb. It is a small but stunning waterfall with crystal clear pools - 3 in total, the water which we had to paddle through to get across to the final ledge is Icy cold, but incredibly refreshing as by this time we were very hot! If you are up to the climb I thoroughly recommend this. The 'game drives' are very tame by African standards as there are only antelope, a few buffalo, wildebeest, ostrich etc, The San Rock art is very interesting and great to see, to have some photo opportunities, but there are only a few good ones really worth visiting. Sadly for us one down side, and I now wish retrospectively I had discussed this with the guiding team during our stay. Our guide who was a very nice young girl was very new, in fact still in training. This meant she was unable to answer all of our questions, or give a huge amount of information. she was often so intent on driving that she often struggled to spot wildlife, I found myself seeing things of interest before she could. This was by no means her fault and I feel that she should have had a more senior guide with her. This really detracted from our enjoyment of the game drives, we are veteran safari goers and have been visiting Africa for a number of years, but this was our first time here. However we still thoroughly enjoyed our overall stay at Bushman's Kloof, just a minor niggle. Thanks to all the staff for there warm friendly hospitality, we are already missing the beautiful sun rise casting light onto the stunning rock formations and the sunsets with the fabulous array of colours in the sky.
