Madikwe Game Reserve - Madikwe River Lodge
Madikwe Game Reserve ligt in een malaria-vrij gebied en direct aan de grens met Botswana. Naast de Big Five is het aantal vogels spectaculair te noemen. Het gebied kenmerkt zich door een combinatie van savanne en riviertjes.
Over Madikwe Game Reserve - Madikwe River Lodge

"Fantastic safari - Disappointing service"
Stayed here as part of a longer trip for 3 nights. The lodges were of a good standard for a 3 star hotel with each looking out onto a small river. Being on the edge of the Madikwe national park close to the Botswana border meant that it was a long transfer from Johannesburg (4 -5 hours depending if you stop). The room had all the basics that you would need, the exception being WiFi, the only WiFi was near the reception and was extremely slow. It was not a problem for me as I was there to see the animals. The service from the staff at the lodge was not very welcoming and the staff member that served seemed disinterested to provide any information or explain how things worked at the lodge. Could not even provide a glimmer of a smile, not a great start. This then seemed to carry on for the remainder of the trip, although most of the other staff were pleasant. The game drives were excellent and our driver Fortune was very knowledgeable and always tried to show us something new every time we went out. The drives were around 3 hours at a time with a small break in the middle. We were amazed at the variety of animals that we saw, with only the water buffalo missing from the big 5, but all the other animals more than made up for it. We did 5 game drives which we felt was a good level as any fewer meant that we possibly would not have seen as much. The animals allow you to get quite close in the safari truck which allowed for some amazing memories and pictures. The food was amazing! But just lots of it, we started off with the three course meal lunch and dinner as were not told that we could just have one course if we desired. But the quality of the food was good and large portions. They did a meal under the stars one night which was great. Downside was that there was only 1 bottle of water given on arrival, then all other water was paid for. At more than 4 times the local rate it was not an easy pill to swallow, especially as the temperatures exceeded 30 degrees and you needed to drink a couple litres a day. My advice is that if you are traveling to Madikwe by car transfer then stop off at the supermarket in Sun City and stock up on water as you have a mini fridge in your room which you can use to chill the water. The downside to this hotel is that there is next to no stimulus between the morning and afternoon game drives. For 8 hours of the day between the drives you are left to fill your own time, but with no where to go and the only public space being a rock pool that was never cleaned there was little to pass the time. There were 6 sun loungers between 17 rooms and a communal area near the reception that had zero atmosphere. It would not have taken much to provide even an hour's entertainment. But there was little the staff did to make you feel comfortable. Overall had it not been for our excellent game driver and the food I would be writing a completely different review. I would definitely go on safari again as it was so amazing, just will be staying somewhere different.
"Best bush lodge ever"
The best weekend of our lives. spent our 6yrs anniversary in class. Staff very friendly and helpful. game drive was the best. we give thanks to our game ranger Fortune. He's very clued up with everything happening in the park.
Really memorable experience and Well worth the 5-6 hour drive from Johannesburg. Amazing lodge and surroundings. Fortune is an excellent guide - thank you ! Truly memorable experience in a fantastic setting with great service.
"Discovering South Africa's nature by taking time and being guided by a superb ranger in a superb environment."
This place is really to wind down in South African style. There is no sound of cars, no city noises, no light pollution. Only you, the staff and nature. Even at night, you can see the milky way. That is, if you can stand the Hyena's calls at night giving you the bumps. If you expect to have a safari and view animals on request like the zoo, then this trips are not your choice. You might be lucky to see a lot of your want-to-see animals, but it is also possible that you will only see some zebras or kudu during the drives. That's is nature. As we wanted to take our time and get to know the bush and the animals, instead of see them and move on. We opted for a week of staying at the River Lodge and we were really sad to leave that great place. The staff is extremely friendly, special thanks to Accurate for taking care of us, each night and each tea time. Did I already mention the food they serve? It's not much, but it is really good. It's not much, but you have breakfast at 10am, lunch at 1pm, tea with cookies and cupcakes at 3pm, and dinner at 8pm. Oh, and you have coffee time with biscuits, cake at 8am and sun downers with biscuits, cake at 6pm. After a few days, you are ready to be served as lion food. They will try to do everything to make your stay as pleasant as possible. A big thanks again for a great singing and the cake for the birthday of my wife and off course the attention at the room. It was nice to share the cake with our fellow game drive persons. The game drives were extremely well documented and commented by our great ranger Benson. That man has a golden heart and a knowledge to be mentioned. Tracking wild life by using sound, smell, tracks, view. Remarkable, you have to experience to believe. I did, and now I'm a believer that it's possible. We were really happy to join him on our drives for the entire week. If you take your time you can see a lot. Benson was driving around in the very early morning as we didn't have luck for sights until he suddenly spotted a lions tail in the distance. There we bumped in two fresh kills by the lion brothers and two females. A fresh wildebeest as breakfast. Standing still at some rocks for quite some time and all being quite to spot the leopard cup. Well, that is luck but it's nice to be part of that place and nature. Tracking the wild dogs by sound and knowledge. Remarkable. And off course, if you are lucky to have a nice group of likely minded people and the land cruiser is half full with 6 people. Then it's really a joy to be part of River Lodge. You have to experience what it is and take your time. Don't go for two nights as you will miss the vibe of the bush. What do I miss the bush and River Lodge, and off course the game drives. I have my photos, films and journal to enjoy it all over again. But nothing beats the real thing. Thanks River Lodge for making my holiday unforgettable.
