"Good Restaurant, Tired Accommodation "
Our reception on arrival could not have been any less welcoming. An older Afrikaner ‘gentleman’ (who was also present at breakfast) stood outside the door of property watching us struggle with luggage not only failing to arrange assistance for us, but rudely ignoring us when we greeted him. Our room was not ready so we left our luggage and went for lunch. On return we were shown to our room (which was not a twin as specified on the Traifinder booking - so we had to be moved). The staff member taking us to our room pointed to the pool area and mentioned a TV room, but did not explain anything else (e.g. Honesty bar for cold drinks). - The room itself lacked the amenities I would expect in a four star rating (e.g. no TV - yes there is a TV room, but it is little more than a dark cupboard with a maximum guest capacity of 2). Also the lack of a fridge with chilled water given the outside temperature of 36 degrees was unacceptable. - The pool area was particularly disappointing. It was small and quite dirty (accept this is due to overhanging trees, but that simply means you need staff to more regularly clean the pool and surrounds). There were no sun loungers - only uncomfortable / dirty deck chairs. No towels were provided - I had to go into reception to obtain one. Similarly I had to go to reception to ask about some water after 2 hours in the heat (at which point I was told about the honesty bar - although there was no water -only beer and soft drinks in the fridge). When I asked for water on departure apparently there was no bottled water - similar to the wine stocking which I will come on to. - No shower for guests to shower before entering the pool - further underming pool hygiene. - The general grounds / garden area seemed somewhat neglected. No-where was there any comfortable / clean sun-loungers to relax in (yes there were 2 upright chairs on our terrace which was dark due to ground floor location). There seemed to be a distinct lack of staff presence in the outside area. - The pre-dinner drinks and the evening meal was of high quality and service was good. I would have said faultless / no complaints except that we asked for a bottle of Rose to be told that there was none in stock. We then asked for the Chenin Blanc as an alternative - again none in stock. We speculated that given the quality of the food and the popularity with non-residents, whether the focus was on the restaurant at the expense of the general accommodation. - Cold / continental breakfast selection was very limited. Based on the above, we had no desire to stay longer than 1 night and I would not recommend Mimosa to anyone other than for dinner (which was interestingly the views expressed by 2 local residents we chatted to at lunch in the local restaurant when we arrived).
"Wine and Wildlands Tour 2017"
We organised a road trip through the Wine Lands from the UK. There were 3 couples, 2 of whom had stayed here before and wanted to revisit as the food at the Mimosa Lodge is exceptional. We were not disappointed - it was as good if not better than before. We stayed in 3 new rooms at the back of the garden this time which worked really well - they were large, air conditioned and gave us some privacy from the rest of the hotel.
Wonderful room with views of the gardens and mountains. Breakfasts and dinners were excellent . Staff were very good ,particularly the manager. Also good to meet the owner after dinner on the second night. One bad point was the swimming pool - unappealing and looked scruffy. It let down the whole appearance of the garden.
Our 3rd time back to Mimosa Lodge. Facilitated at early check in for us (2hrs early) as we had a 3yr old with us. Friendly staff, great restaurant, good food. Only criticism, gardens could do with a bit more love and attention.
We had a stop-over at the Momosa Lodge in Montagu while traveling with family. Had a very good stay there. The pool temperature was perfect on this hot afternoon and the following morning. Dinner and Breakfast was outstanding.
