"More than we could have hoped for"
We stayed at Phinda for 4 days, including 7 game drives in the weeks before Christmas 2016. Phinda was recommended to us over other game reserves or Kruger for the combination of service, accommodations, and the virtual guarantee that you will get to spend amazing time with the animals. Our family of 4, including an 11 and 13 year old, could not have been happier with each of these elements of the place. The Phinda game drives ended up being the unanimous highlight of a two week trip through SA and Zambia. Not only were we able to get incredibly close to lions, cheetah, elephants, rhinos, leopards, countless interesting birds, etc., etc., but we learned an so much from our guide and our tracker. We came away with an amazing experience and a lasting education, which made this a stay beyond our expectations. We happened to be staying in the family cottages, which are slightly smaller than the other suites, and don't have the huge views that Phinda suites are known for, but which have the advantage of being mirror image adjoining rooms, and even more important, provide you access to a private guide and tracker for your entire stay. With kids, this is definitely a plus -- you can set your own clock for the drives, be a little more relaxed, and pursue the experiences that you want as a family. Finally, I'll comment on the overall experience of service at Phinda. It was great. I don't think of Phinda as a luxury experience, but rather a very comfortable, very well appointed, very real experience with top notch service. At breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we were always being asked how the drives were going and if there was anything else we needed. The staff got to know our kids and would joke with them and help to show them their own unique perspective. And just as important, through the staff (many of whom are locals from around the Phinda area) we were able to gain more of a perspective on the area we were in. There is so much more I can say about the personal attention of our guide and tracker, the quality of the food, the beautiful views from the public areas, and more, but I'll leave it at that. Go to Phinda. You won't be disappointed.
We have just finished a 4 night visit to Phinda Forest Lodge. We absolutely loved the whole experience. The rooms are lovely and private and almost disappear into the forest. The game viewing was brilliant, we saw pretty much everything and the sundowners and Amarula coffee provided lovely breaks on the morning and afternoon game drives. Our truly brilliant ranger, Theo, organised a special fishing trip which ended up involving barbel, lions and a herd of elephants - the hi-light of our trip....along with the first viewings of some new lion cubs! The food was delicious, high quality, plentiful but sensible portions (although you can stuff yourself silly if you want!). There were some lovely touches and surprises which I won't say so as not to ruin them for future guests. I really recommend this place - its very special as our the people. Big thank you to tracker Dan and especially ranger Theo who made our holiday one of our best ever. Second family.
The moment you drive through the sand forest area you know you are in a special place. The general dining/relaxing area is unbelievable and the service is top notch. Then you get to your rooms and your experience gets taken to the next level. The rooms make you feel like you are right in the trees due to the glass walls. Every detail has been thought through. The food was amazing, expect to put on weight as food is always available and it is truly delicious. We were fortunate to see a couple of lions mating, a group of cheetah right next to the vehicle and a fair number of general game. We had a group of 15 and were looked after by our rangers, Theo, Matt and Fred. The rangers are brilliant. I would highly recommend a visit to the lodge.
Very peaceful. Rooms are fantastic. A little disappointed with the dining area and menu but despite that, a true gem. Good game viewing and experienced guides made it unforgettable. Friendly staff and service was good. Definitely return.
Helpful, knowledgeable and efficient staff. Excellent accommodation and superb food. Early morning and late afternoon/evening safaris in comfortable trucks gave a close-up view of many wild animals. Elephant, Lion, Cheeta, Kudu, Impala, Giraffe and Warthog to name some. Guides well informed and attentive at all times giving a secure and safe experience.
