"An experience of a lifetime"

The lodge, the staff, the food and wine and the animals were all superb. Especially the animals. The Rangers worked very hard (especially ours, Dylan) and all had great knowledge and passion which they shared with us. They managed to find the animals regularly and we saw Rhinos, Elephants, Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards, Giraffes, Water Buffalo, Wilderbeast, Kudu, Impala, Springbock, Zebra, Hyena, Warthog, Crocodile and many birds. We also saw the lions after a kill feeding on a Zebra. This was brilliant. The reserve is excellent and a real tribute to the owners and managers, but the Rangers bring it to life.

"Truly amazing! Madikwe was unbelievable!"

We have just returned from a 4 night safari at Tau Game Lodge in Madikwe. Having been to Kruger national park before (and having loved it) I can firmly say that Madkiwe was far superior. The guides were more informative, the animals more plentiful and we got so close it was amazing. Every morning afternoon and evening we were treated to elephants from big to small drinking and playing in the water hole that was visible from all of the rooms and teh decking where you had lunch and breakfast. The food was amazing. the staff were outstanding. the rooms were fantastic. We couldnt fault this and cant wait to take the kids back on day.

"Outstanding place for safari"

I spent three nights here on a recent visit to South Africa and was impressed with the accommodations, service, guides - indeed the whole experience. This was my first safari in South Africa but not on the African continent, having been to multiple locations in East Africa. We were with a large party of friends (about 50 people) and the staff was able to handle a group this size with ease. We selected a dinner in the bush one evening and it was really an amazing experience. The game was plentiful and for those who did not want to take all of the game drives (one in the morning and one in the afternoon/early evening), there was plenty to see at the water hole right at the lodge. All of the bungalows had balconies overlooking the water hole, making it easy to enjoy things privately if you chose to do so. The rooms were well-appointed and featured an outdoor (enclosed) rain shower. Tau is fenced so it is possible to walk around the property without an escort, adding to the experience. I would definitely recommend considering Tau is you are thinking about safari. The area is also a malaria-free zone, making it easier than some other options in South Africa.

"Excellent service"

We were 4 adults and 1 toddler (19 months old) and we all had a blast. The service that was given to us was amazing. All the staff were very friendly and were very happy to take care and play with the small one. We left him with a babysitter while we were on game drives and he was well taken care of. The finishings in the room are a bit old, but it is an older lodge, so I would expect it, however it is comfortable, and very little time is spent in the room anyway so you won't even notice. The spa is also really nice, with your usual spa treatments all available. The food was also excellent, and they can cater halaal meat if given enough notice. We game them a day, so they could only manage halaal chicken for us.

"Magical two day escape from Johannesburg"

My friend and I (both conservation biologists) snuck away from an intense meeting in Johannesburg for 48 hours (two nights) of fantastic break at Tau. It was just wonderful, from start to finish. First up, when you look at the price, remember it includes 2 guided game drives a day, there (huge) meals a day, plus various other treats and niceties such as drinks at sunset. And it seems quite reasonable. Our four game drives (4 pm, 6 am, 4 pm, 6 am) were as good as it gets. We saw masses of wildlife with Murray, a truly excellent guide. As biologists we were delighted wth his knowledge, passion and natural history skill. He was very nice and judged well what to show us each drive, gradually deepening our understanding of the Reserve. It's very dry and flat, but dotted with nice inselbergs (abruptly rising big hills). Among a huge array of other wildlife, we saw lions at a wildebeest kill (5 m from our vehicle), with hyenas circling. At one stage we were simultaneously looking at a giraffe, mother and baby rhino, and four elephants, all close up. But we also stopped to look at ant armies on the march, shepherd trees, and many gorgeous birds. Another 10 game drives would not have exhausted the possibilities for wildlife viewing. And we loved the breaks for coffee (mornings) and wine/gin/amarula etc (at sunset), while a rhino or impalas looked on. We had 8 people plus Murray in our vehicle, which could have seemed like a lot but didn't because the others were all so very nice and compatible. The lodge itself was great. Very comfortable rooms, and nice central gathering places. Every room looked onto the water hole, so we could see parades of animals from our porch in the mornings and evenings (too hot). Tau has a full electric fence around quite a bit of land - and a nice small playground - so it would be great for kids. I'm bringing mine next time ... We enjoyed the lovely staff who were warmly at ease with visitors. [And who could/did sing wonderfully. They need to make a CD.] Food was good and plentiful. And eaten overlooking the waterhole, with more animal viewing. It was all quite fantastic. My only small suggestion would be more comfortable chairs on the porches of each little cabin. The current upright metal ones are not right for that setting and discourage lingering. Remember your binoculars !!
