"An amazing experience!"

   30-11-2016
At 84 and 77 our family and friends either thought we were mad spending three nights in a tent, or, thought we were adventurous. After seeing all the photos and listening to our experiences, we soon gained their respect. Flying from England to Jo-berg, Jo-berg to Durban we then had a three hour drive to the camp. One tip is to try to arrive before dark. We were greeted by smiling faces and very friendly staff where we were offered hot towels and a nice cold drink. By the time we reached our tent it was dark. A little challenging to say the least as there is no electricity, except for a light in the bathroom. Candles and a couple of lamps helped us to unpack and get the things we needed for the morning Safari ride. We were told we'd get a wake up call at 4:30am. As it happened we woke at 4:00am and found it easy to get up and get ready. After coffee in the dining room, watching the light rain, and gloomy skies we wondered if the Safari drive would take place. We did go and that first morning it was just the two of us the Ranger and the spotter. The vehicle is a very comfortable Land Rover but without a roof, and it seats about 10. We set off into the bush and were glad we had warm coats as once the drizzle stopped it was cold and windy. For the following three hours we spotted a variety of the animals one hopes to see. Even a Lioness came close. Elephants walked so close to the vehicle too, it was amazing. After a total of four Safari rides the list of animals was long. We saw everything we'd hoped to see. The Cheetah brothers (and the two cubs) Lioness and her cubs, giraffes. White Rhino and her young, the Wildebeests, also colourful birds. On the last evening the long awaited rains came. During the rides there is a stop for refreshments, and as there is no portable toilet the ranger will kindly find you a "toilet tree". Once the ride is over you assemble in the dinning room for a good breakfast. After that you have free time until the afternoon ride around 5:00pm. There is a light snack before the drive and Dinner is served once back around 8:00pm The tents are well equipped with a safe, a mimi bar,and hanging space. The bed is large and very comfortable. The shower is good with plenty of hot water. The tent is off the ground on a deck. A few tips. take a small torch/flashlight to keep on you at all times. Always take a warm coat (and hat)on the drives, even if it's a hot day. Ponchos are provided for the rain. The bar has WiFi which is a bit iffy. Take three pin adapters for your electrical chargers. We want to thank the ranger and spotter for sharing their knowledge about the animals in the wild. The friendly helpful staff for making our stay so enjoyable, and all the great people we met at the Thanda camp. Together you all made iit a trip of a lifetime.

"Amazing"

   27-11-2016
I have had the privilege of Visiting Thanda twice, once staying at the Main Villa the other time at the Lodge. All I can say is WOW. Words simply don't do this place justice. From the most amazing staff, Trackers, chefs etc to the most magnificent wildlife. Having a heard of elephants drink from your pool!? Watching a Lioness protect her cubs, seeing a Rhino at play, and the 2 Cheetahs who are brothers sleeping under a tree. Truly amazing. This is. It 6 stars resort but a million stars as they all come out at night! Just breath taking!

"An experience good for the soul"

   11-11-2016
I recently visited Thanda with my cousin. We stayed in Thanda's Jabula tented camp and had a very pleasant experience. The staff were welcoming and attentive from the moment that we arrived. We were met at the gate by our guide Themba in a Range Rover. He brought us to the tented camp where we were greeted with wet towels and a welcome drink. Themba was a fantastic host and game ranger. He made the game drives quite enjoyable, sharing with us his knowledge about the wild and also his Zulu culture. We had some incredible sightings, including a herd of 23 elephants. Saw 4 out of the Big Five. The tented camp accommodations were luxury for the bush, but could definitely be updated. It has a lot of potential to be more of a 5 star experience. At night, we could hear the hyenas and animals around our tent. This made our experience quite authentic and reminded us that despite being surrounded by luxury, that we were in fact, in middle of the bush. The outside shower was amazing. It was a nice touch returning from dinner to find a small bottle of Amarula on your pillow. The food was good. Staff were super friendly and accommodating. It was always a pleasure for them to escort us to and from our tent. All you had to do was ring your bell and they were at your service. There is limited electricity and no phones in the tents. Instead, we used a USB radio for any requests from the reception. The wifi was very good around the common areas. We enjoyed a massage at their tented bush spa, which was such a special treat. Nothing quite like hearing the birds and nature surrounding you while you are having a massage. The memories made at Thanda will always be cherished. Thank you Thanda for making our stay an unforgettable one!

"Luxurious but a bit lacking in atmosphere"

   04-11-2016
Spent 3 nights at the Lodge with a couple of friends. Were a bit disappointed with a lack of atmosphere at times. Eric, the Manager, was very friendly and helpful and ensured he knew guests' names and joked with guests when appropriate, but the rest of the staff were a bit remote. Plenty of game sightings, including elephants in and around the lodge, a large herd of buffalo at the waterhole, and even elephant drinking out of our private pool. The rooms were brilliant, huge and with many facilities. The food was good, but not spectacular.

"Thanda or Phinda?"

   01-11-2016
We spent two nights each at the two safari camps - both places were most enjoyable but definitely had slightly different experiences. The good news is that you'll have a great time at either camp - accommodation, service levels etc. are high at both. Phinda is physically much bigger - three times the size of the area that most guests access at Thanda - with more diverse habitats. At Thanda you are more aware of 'the hand of man' as you regularly come across perimeter fencing or hear a main road, which is not the case at Phinda. And Phinda has more animals in general...so you can come across several different groups of cheetahs, for example, rather than searching for Thanda's two brothers. Phinda also has regular leopard sightings (including whilst we were there) whereas they seem infrequent at Thanda. Phinda has been operating for a good deal longer and feels more mature. Food is good at both places, but Phinda has the edge (if you don't want to feel constantly stuffed we'd suggest taking it easy on the buffet...). But Thanda certainly has its positives. We preferred the Thanda accommodation - the bush suites at the Safari lodge were spacious and charming. And very African: whilst the Phinda rooms at the Mountain Lodge were excellent, they didn't have that uniquely African feel. Thanda also seems to try a little bit harder...it's privately owned (Phinda is part of the &Beyond group that has numerous properties across three continents) and you feel slightly more cherished...little things like sparkling wine in the complimentary minibar (Phinda just has still), glasses of Amarula waiting for you after dinner. Lastly Thanda feels more local...all local management, whereas Phinda has managers in from around the country it appears. Your game driving experience will be determined largely by your guide...in our case our guide at Thanda (Themba - identified by other writers as being outstanding) was really excellent, whereas our guide at Phinda, whilst very experienced, was less engaging. But that all depends on whom you have. Both places are recommended.
