Over Protea Breakwater Lodge

"Perfect Location "

A perfect choice to stay in Cape Town. Make sure you upgrade to business room as they're a lot bigger and in a newer building where breakfast is served. Speaking of breakfast, it was delicious with stunning Table Mountain views. The staff and service was prefect! Didn't get 5* as the room service wasn't great and took a while but besides that, it was a perfect hotel for the price!

"Nice Hotel"

Booked via Booking.com, wasn't aware that there was a campus, it leads you to believe that the converted prison was the hotel not a university campus, our room the same side as the Stonebreakers was a nice comfortable room, staff don't make decisons seem to ask another for advice but very friendly.

The location is terrific, and the staff pretty good - the rooms, however, leave a lot to be desired! Our original room was a family suite. There was nothing suite or family about it....just two very small rooms with a shared entry and bath. Our room was so small that there was no room to open my suite case. One of the managers was kind enough to move us to another suite (after the front desk clerk told us there were no available rooms). The new suite was one larger room so that the three of us could at least interact as a family together. There were two twin beds and a couch. I slept on the couch for four nights. The bathroom shower did not have a door or curtain, so the entire bathroom floor stayed wet. Also, they do not have any wash clothes. I did ask housekeeping for one, but was told they don't have them. So, I washed my face with a hand towel. Also, the bathroom wall & door were glass, so if anyone needed to go to the bathroom at night, you needed a flashlight in order to not wake everyone else with the bright light. I'm sure this review makes me sound like I'm high maintenance and only stay at five-star places, and that could not be further from the truth. I stay in plenty of budget motels and even camp. These rooms were smaller than most budget friendly places, but cost a lot more! Apparently this place used to be a prison....which explains a lot! I look forward to returning to the Waterfront area, but will definitely stay in a different hotel.

"Excellent value hotel minutes walk from the V&A Waterfront"

We stayed in the executive/business room which was spacious and clean with tea and coffee facilities as well as water replenished daily. We had breakfast one day only, which had a good selection and freshly made eggs however you want them (just be prepared to wait a very long time for them!). WiFi worked ok, but it is a hassle to log in to it - I'm quite tech savvy and it took me a few attempts to get it work - good luck if you are not as tech advanced! The setting in a former prison makes a nice setting, although the ground floor of the building is a university. Only complaint was the hotel staff giving a key card to some random woman who walked in to our room at 5am one morning - how can this be acceptable?!

"Very good stay"

Excellent location. Hop On Hop Off bus leaves from just across the road (down the steps) and it is any easy walk to the waterfront. Reception staff were excellent, despite giving us misinformation re our breakfast inclusion. Our room was spacious and roomy with a great view of Table Mountain. I realise not all rooms are this good - another couple we know had a much smaller room with no view, so perhaps we were just lucky. The Double bed and pillows were very comfortable, however we would have preferred a Queen bed. The refreshment provisions were a bit mean - 2 teabags, 2 sugar sticks, 4 tiny long life milks. You an request more provisions, but that is inconvenient much of the time. We loved the fact this had been a gaol, and there was an intriguing sense of history about the place. The buildings are shared with a Business School, but we had no issue with that. Only negative - if it was raining heavily you would need to go downstairs and to/from reception underground. This should have been explained at check in. We found this out accidentally.
