"Cherished South African Safari Experience"

Kapama Karula We have been on multiple Safaris and stayed at 7 different high-end lodges in South Africa, returning to some more than once. Our return trip to Kapama Karula from required us to travel 33,900km by road and air as well as make the adjustment twice between time zones that are 6 hours apart. Having done this a few times, we knew that the antidote to the exhausting travel (and the stress of normal work-life, from which we sought respite) had to be breathtaking wilderness, plentiful game viewing and really comfortable accommodation. Our 5 night stay Kapama Karula hit all of those highlights and many, many more. The Kapama wilderness was indeed breathtaking. Our game drive experience was a continuum of diverse natural beauty, captivating sightings that far surpassed the typical Big 5 objective, and masses of fun! Time spent with ranger, Riaan and tracker, Edwin was a huge plus during our visit. Together they made an incomparably good natured, skilled and knowledgeable team. They were so generous with their time. They treated us to some of the longest drives we’ve ever experienced. We revelled in the rare freedom of losing a sense of time and being dictated to only by what the bush gave us to explore and enjoy. We love walking and have done a number of bush walks on safari. One of the most memorable was our walk with Andrew. He was another fountain of knowledge and we especially enjoyed learning about the kaleidoscope of butterflies and small wild flowers and herbs that we encountered in the huge open meadow-like space that he chose for our walk. As well as the smaller flora and fauna, and several different birds we also viewed two Nyla’s males facing off... dorsal fur standing erect as they walked with plodding menace around each other. To add to that, we met some warthogs trotting purposefully by; a pair of black-backed jackals; a giraffe with her very slender infant in tow; and a very active troupe of baboons. To share their space with them, while we were on foot, was a privilege and it humbled us. The architecture, interior and amenity design and space planning at Karula results in an exquisite harmony of modern African style and luxurious comfort. At home we live at elevation in a simple house, the entire point of which is to maximize tree canopy and valley views. We live with windows open to pull in cooling breezes and draw the eyes outward to the views. At Karula our senses were constantly calmed by the integration of outdoor and indoor spaces, wilderness views and changing light. There just isn’t anywhere to walk, sit, lie or swim that isn’t beautiful. The gym at Karula afforded one of my top two best views from a gym, ever. (The other was from a 10,000 square foot gym in a hotel built at 11,000 foot elevation, overlooking the mountains in Telluride, Colorado). And the spa... what a stunning haven of care and relaxation. We are not usually regular spa-goers, but in 6 days we went to the spa three times. We found that our treatments really factored into how quickly we were able to recover from the three flights taken to get to Karula; and how effectively we were able to decompress from our “crazy everyday life” mental state. The design of the spa is in keeping with “Karula-gorgeous-style ” and the treatments themselves have been thoughtfully conceived and are carefully administered. We met four different therapists at the spa and each was welcoming, gracious, and skillful. The spa manager was incredibly empathetic and efficient and somehow managed to keep fitting us in, even on one day, with just a couple of hours notice. Food and wine at Karula is epic but not grandiose. We enjoyed it all, from the 5 course tasting menu paired with luscious South African wines and set up for us by the fire in the library, to my favourite bakery item at breakfast, the banana bread. Coming from the Caribbean, I’ve eaten my fair share of banana bread. Karula’s version tops the list. The head chef at Karula, Makhi, was kind enough to come and chat with us from time to time; and it was obvious that he could have been a success in any stellar restaurant around the world. His passion for his work, the credit he constantly gave to his team, and the interest he took in our preferences, were all remarkable. His fusion of so many culinary and cultural influences with an array of fresh produce, venison and seafood, demonstrated a mastery of both the technical and artistic elements of inspired cuisine. All of that, coupled with the skilled logistics of the lodge management team, also resulted in an unforgettable sundowner stop while on game drive on our last evening at Karula. On any given evening, the drinks and snacks provided at the sundowner stop were delicious, but on this evening we were surprised with a special stop in the South eastern corner of Masouto Plains. Theresa and Cherisse from the lodge management team organised everything and joined us. They made up a perfect six, along with Edwin (who promises to eat duck next time we are at Karula) and Riaan, Tom and I. This meant we weren’t alone when we tried our first Springbokie shooters (peppermint liqueur layered with Amarula). The spread of canapés was irresistible and included fresh guacamole, olives in homemade pesto, duck wrap, prawns, exotic fruits, chocolate sausage and show-stopping chocolate brownies. (You’d think we could never have eaten a five course tasting menu later that evening.... but somehow we did it and savored every delectable morsel!) Whenever we think of our time at Kapama Karula, we think of Johan. Johan was our gracious, attentive host every time we had a meal - whether in the library, on the dining terrace, or in our room (in front of the fire, on two chilly evenings). Johan also took care of us on our last dinner in a location set up specially for us, which we won’t disclose, because we don’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone else. It was a busy evening at the lodge and somehow Johan, who was definitely looking after other guests too, made us feel like we were the only guests at Karula. By the time he brought his colleagues to sing happy birthday, towards the end of the meal, I was in tears. Our experience at Karula cannot easily be summed up, but this is my best effort: It was relaxing and enervating at the same time. It was a gastronomic, sensory, emotional and spiritual treat... and we spent time with some of the loveliest, most generous-of-spirit people whom we have ever met. You are your best version of yourself when you can engage with such people. When you meet them they are hosts, but when you leave them, they feel like friends. Tom and I will carry the Kapama Karula experience among our most cherished of South African Safari memories. We couldn’t share this experience without acknowledging, with enormous appreciation, our Africa travels experts, True Africa, led by Troy. His colleague Clare also provided much support. We are now planning another Africa trip with their help!

"Not worth the price"

If you want to spend money this is the place for you. Plays the boutique suites card well, rooms are nice although they had, in our case, bat droppings that led to a change of room. Food was underwhelming. Safari experience was poor, both due to the the private location (restricted space and with power lines running overhead) and poor guide experience.

My wife and I fashioned ourselves as world travelers. That was until Kapama opened a whole new world to the little one we knew. WOW!! Thank you so much for the most unbelievable experience of a life time. We were with All Star trackers Abrie and Elvis who were absolutely amazing. We stayed for four nights to ensure we saw everything which ended up being a good choice. The same animals do different things every time you see them, so every trip out was spectacular. We were able to quickly get 4 of the big 5 in, but the Leopard proved elusive. Finally, on the last morning safari, we found him, thanks to the dogged, never say die mentality of Abrie and Elvis. I knew Abrie meant business when my wife asked him what the plan was for the game drive that day. Abrie responded resoundingly, “The plan is to find a leopard!” And find him we did! Conveniently located right across the street from the tiny Hoedspruit airport, where every plane is late, Kapama will pick you up and whisk you away to the adventure of a life time. We saw lions on the drive in from the airport! I can’t imagine staying anywhere else for a safari than Kapama Karula. This place would be considered luxury if it was in Paris, let alone the jungle. Staff was amazing. Food was excellent. Everything consideration is accommodated to ensure you have the best time ever and tell all your friends when you come home. Done and done! We were extremely lucky for the time of year that we went (April). The grass is a little high for leopard hunting, but it didn’t rain much and Karula was not particularly busy. Therefore, 4 of our game drives (they leave at 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily this time of year) were just my wife and I. Private safari, priceless. Although I must say we enjoyed our 2 Brazilian companions, Daniel and Roberta for the other 4 adventures! Thank you so much Kapama for sharing your world with us!

"Be prepared for an adventure and to make friends"

This was our second visit to this lodge and we would definitely go again. Situated across the road from Eastgate, Hoedspruit Airport we were picked up by our guide and tracker (and the laughs started there). The villas are very comfortable, spacious and the perfect place to chill in between drives. Alternatively, try the spa for a treatment or two. Everyone went above and beyond to make this visit so memorable. Strangers became friends and friends now feel like family.

"Outstanding for honey moon !"

We were in honey moon and had the best hotel experience ever imagined. The facilities, services, safaris, food and staff were simple perfect, I have no complaints at all. I would like to praise the waiter THEMBA, who carefully attended us at meals, as well as the rangers BEN and WIENAND, who were extremely skillful on ranging the animals, specially the big five, which we have luckly found on the same day! We will certainly be back !
