"Exceeded High Expectations"

Reading all the reviews, we had very high expectations before our stay. I must say that Kapama somehow managed to exceed them. Right from the pickup at the airport we knew it would be an amazing experience. The game drives were spectacular. We loved our guide Lucia who was with us the whole time. She was full of information (she has a Zoology degree) and just awesome to be around. Our tracker, Oris, was highly skilled. The way he could track and spot the animals, it was like he had a sixth sense. We saw so many animals and the time spent observing their behavior in their natural environment could not be put into words. Between drives, the experience at the lodge could not be any better. Super attentive service and the food was delicious. If you are on the fence at all about deciding to make the trip or stay at this lodge, just do it. You will not regret the experience.

the Kapama Southern Camp truly stands out. the safari was awesome and we could see the almost all the big 5 in the stay we had. awesome place with huge beautiful rooms and very spacious. the food is also nice and the hotel staff were very nice and adjusting to the requests we made for vegetarian food.

"Amazing Safari option"

I have been to many safari lodges and I must say that Kapama Southern Camp truly stands out. We had a short stay of only 1 night and we ended up seeing all of the big 5 in just 2 game drives which was superb! The Luxury Suites are incredible and very spacious each with their own swimming pool and amazing amenities in the suites. Even the standard suites are very nice should you have a smaller budget.

I loved our one night stay here. I wished we did 2 nights but on the other hand, what we got for the 1 night was more than we expected. First, the level of service. We had one ranger the whole stay and he was super friendly and funny. We first had a room with a lot of ants (ants nest in the room- which you can't 100% prevent seeing as we are in the wildlife) but they put us in another room immediately. The game drives were amazing and fun! The food just as amazing and the friendliest sweetest staff! Not overdone like in Asia. Great!

"A perfect safari experience "

We chose Kapama Southern Camp based on a mixture of location (entrance to the Reserve right next to the airport) and very good reviews based on tripadvisor. We have just finished a two night stay in the Southern camp, suite (no private pool). The room was excellent (better than the online pictures) and the food was fab. What stood out though was the service. This place is run like a well-oiled machine, everything works meticulously well, and the slightest detail is thought through, but warm and personalised service. There is also enough flexibility to accommodate your needs. You are assigned one Ranger and one Tracker (who take you out on game drives) and one waitress for meals. We had 6 people in our truck which was nice. We have a special diet and Kapama were excellent at dealing with this, it was impressive. One point to note, is that travelling this time of year is rainy season. Two out of the four game drives had a little bit of rain, but you are provided with a poncho which keeps out the rain. The game drives are of course the absolute highlight. Don't expect the plains of the Serengeti, you are mostly driving next to bush and trees. The vehicle is open topped which gives you most visual access. The Kapama park is divided into 4 areas and each game drive you will explore one area (you will certainly not cover all of that area given the size of the Kapama park, but it is nice to see different areas). The Rangers speak to each other, and you have a high possibility of seeing one or 2 of the Big 5 per each game drive (at least in our experience - we saw each of the Big 5, twice in 4 game drives, but we were lucky according to our Ranger). The 5 minute stop during the drive for nibbles and drinks are really nice. We had Gus (Ranger) and Aleck (Tracker). Gus was highly experienced, adept at answering our questions and displayed a high degree of professionalism when 2 of the members of our truck were a little scared. Gus also went the extra mile to spend a little longer with the 'exciting' animals, and we even came back half an hour late from one drive so that we saw all that we could. The Spa is an absolute must! Truly outstanding and don't forget to make time to use the steam room and pool (it is a 10 min drive to Karula where he spa is located and the Rangers drive you). Query whether a private pool is worth the extra money if you intend to go to the Spa and the main pool was mostly empty in any case - plus the weather is temperamental this time of year. One very slight con to note is the mosquitos. You will see mosquitos even in the room as this is high season for mosquitos. When I first arrived I was a little disappointed to see 5 mosquitos in the bathroom and a few more buzzing around the room. In absolute fairness to Kapama they fumigated the room during our game drive and replaced the mosquito netting on the backdoor. There is also an excellent repellent in the room, and we fumigated both days as a precaution (we were not actually bitten at all - and we did not go OTT). There is no tipping culture during your stay. I was very impressed that Kapama recommend a tip of 300 rand per person per day to cover the Ranger, Tracker and other staff. It is uncomfortable if you don't know what is expected. We felt that 4 game drives were probably enough, but you can do other activities (for an extra fee) instead such as spending time with elephants, hot air ballooning or bush walking. Also consider spending a night out in the open - Lions Den (Google it). If you are celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, birthday etc. there is a nice surprise on your last dinner - but I won't say more.
