Thanda Safari Lodge is a magical game lodge. Getting there is quite easy with good directions and one is welcomed and made to feel very special on arrival and throughout one's stay. Arriving at the gate, we had a short wait for our transfer. The guest bathroom at the entrance gate needs attention in the sense that the basin is badly stained, there is very low water pressure, the paper towel had run out too. Refreshing waters were served (a choice of still and sparkling), although no glasses or straws. Accommodation: Pros: Sumptuous with 3 living areas nicely decorated and well designed. Loads of packing space with sufficient hangers. Bathroom is big with double hand basins, a separate loo and two showers. Showers had rain shower heads which were great and the hot water was always hot ( I mention this as often water in bush accommodation is inconsistent). Towels are large and fluffy, they were also replaced when required. The deck offers a plunge pool (very cold though), comfortable, circular day bed and a kraal-type courtyard. I did find that the deck got dirtier as we stayed on which was a pity. The deck offers one unique view and infinite peace and quiet. Cons: The decor and furniture in the room is slightly dated and in need of an upgrade. I found HOUSEKEEPING in the hotel very slack. There is a lot dust on furniture, especially the bedside tables. Maintenance could also be improved as although the rooms are big and have a uniquely African feel, the cleanliness is not up to standard. Cobble tiled scurtings are very stained as were the windows in the shower. Looking out of our shower window, one has the unfortunate view of empty beer cans and unsightly broken glass that are "hidden" under the deck. Management needs to step in here and give the units a good "once over" as it seems a pity that such lavish accommodation is not kept thoroughly clean? Communal Areas: Lovely, open spaces with African decoration and attention to detail. I believe that the decks could be more creatively used instead of limiting dining in the dining room. The bar area resembles an after thought, the library is a treat. Food and Beverage: I found the white wine offered as part of the complimentary option very poor. At the same time, I must mention that the manager did upgrade the wine at no additional charge since we only enjoyed wine and no spirits. My biggest complaint is the service staff at mealtimes. I found their attire shabby, inconsistent and untrained in upscale meal etiquette. Sitting close to the exit from the kitchen proved to be very noisy with the door banging loudly at regular intervals. The "chef" presenting the daily choice of menu is not a good idea if certain French terminology is incorrectly pronounced and the end product presented is not in line of what was personally offered. Also, by having "the chef" recommending the menu, one has a superior level of expectation that was certainly not delivered. The food was bland, often overcooked and boring. Desserts were the worst. Hefty portions of stodgy bakes that smacked of sharp baking powder - not appetizing at all. Presentation is dated with no skill - in fact, the cuisine here is in an unfortunate "TIME WARP". I must mention that the Bush Braai was well cooked - simple South African braaied meets with simple salads. What I chose was really great, service was on par and the setting was lovely. Again the Malva pudding was awful and the caramel sauce "a la blik" (from a tin). Game Drives: We found Willard passionate and responsible. He went out of his way to show us the Big 5 barring leopard. He has a keen sense of humour and a delight to chat to. He is very knowledgeable and cares about his environment. We learned masses of interesting information from him. The vehicles were mostly dusty and when we needed to use the rain ponchos, they too were very dusty. At this standard of Lodge, surely the game vehicles should be cleaned on arrival for guest drives? No binoculars are available nor simple reference books (they usually provide these at most game farms we have frequented). Wine offered on these drives are uninspiring with limited snacks. The small runner that the glasses were presented was filthy? Besides the above, we saw a crash of rhinos in the midst of a territorial fight, male giraffes necking for dominance, a 52 yr old bull elephant at "face value" right by our Land drover (he gazed at us peacefully and wondered off in his own time), a sleepy pride of lions and cubs, a lonesome cheetah male and cheetah cubs... Very special sightings, so thank you Willard. One does need to be aware that this is not Kruger, so the game is somewhat limited and one does see the enclosing fences and cars and vans on boundary roads at times. In Summary: Would I pay the going rate for the same experience? Yes, for a cleaner room! One can't beat the decadence and the beautiful deck. The level of catering and beverages needs professional input and an urgent upgrade. A passionate, young chef with sound qualifications is a necessity here. Waitresses need to be trained and quieten down during dinner service. Management needs a big improvement here. This is key and the rest will improve? Thank You Vicky from BEST BEDS for my booking and great opportunity to upgrade from the Tented Camp to the Safari Lodge.

"Thanda Safari- the Lodge"

This is an amazing venue. Thee rooms are incredible, huge sitting room, huge bedroom, huge bathhroon, vast terrace with swimming pool, day bed Lapa, braai area. Everything built to the highest standard. The main building is as beautiful, the food superb, service first-rate yet friendly and personal. It is probably the best safari lodge I have seen in 30 years of safariing. Game drives are of a very high standard, with top-notch guides. Yes, it is expensive, but I would call it cheap for what it offers. A review does need a negative, so I need to think of one - the deck near the swimmingpool needed a bit of refurbishing.

"Prefect Wedding"

My partner and I visit Thanda back in 2013 on a volunteer trip and fell in love with in there and then. We have recently just returned from here. We had the pleasure of enjoying our Wedding here ! We stayed in Villa Izulu, I think we had to pick our families mouths from the floor when they arrived it was that fantastic. Welcomed by fizz and cold towels to refresh ourself after a long journey. We started off on the deck at the back on the Villa facing a waterhole while we had our welcome induction by Jenny. We were then showed to our rooms couple by couple and explained every feature in the room. Lucas was our Villa Host and he was fantastic. Remembered all guests names and always how a Gin & Tonic at hand for my partner and I. Our wedding was amazing as your can see from the pictures I have attached. Didn't have to worried about a thing. Christian our photographer is Thanda's resident photographer and boy he knew all the hidden spots around the reserve to find and see as many animals as possible. He was also our guide throughout or stay too. Also he makes a mean Gin and Tonic too haha! All staff at Thanda Villa Izulu deserve a pat on the back and a big thank you from the Hayes party. We hope your enjoyed us as we enjoyed you too ! Thank you for making us feel to welcome ! Myself and Steven will be back next year so I guess ... we will see you then ! All the best Michael & Steven Hayes Xx

"superb 10/10 a wonderful unforgettable experience"

My Suite (number 8) comprised several interconnecting modules which are really beautiful and to my delight they have a superb view over the valley from every angle. The staff excellent, just the right amount of friendly interaction with guests; food is also excellent and as for the safari drives well it just gets better. The animals are not tracked, unlike at some other lodges, so you never know what you are likely to encounter – I didn’t see cheetahs or a leopard but virtually everything else; we missed seeing a leopard by seconds and after that it was playing hide and seek and won. I experienced two especially memorable and wonderful moments (in 2 days) – a herd of elephants taking a bath in a watering hole, and a white rhino taking exception to our presence. I rarely give 10/10 and Thanda is not perfect but little in life is; Thanda comes very close. It was wonderful to see the sky alight with 5,000 stars and planets and hear the impromptu explanation of key formations. I was very disappointed to have not booked to stay longer; I’d recommend a minimum of three and preferably four nights.

We stayed for 2 nights in the tented camp followed by 2 nights at the lodge. Both venues were excellent in their own ways but the lodge was so sumptuous and luxurious it is difficult to imagine anywhere more beautifully appointed. All the staff were so helpful and kind. Ephrahim and Ronnie were our safari guides throughout our stay and were exceptionally skilled and charming. Despite 4 days of very poor weather they were able to track the animals and drive so proficiently, often in terrible conditions. As a result we were able to see lions, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, rhinos, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, springbok, kudu and a rock python. The meals were limited in choice but were delicious and the menus were well thought out. The sitting area in the lodge was really comfortable and made so cozy when the fire was lit (it was pouring down outside and cold). Our visit would have been perfect if the weather had been half decent. As it was we had 4 great days and a memorable visit: Thanda is an unforgettable place.
