"Highlight of our trip"
My boyfriend and I visited Mkuze Falls Game Reserve last week. The lodge itself is in the middle of nowhere, so you really feel like you're in the depths of South Africa's landscapes, and when you arrive it doesn't disappoint in showing you the spectacular views over vast amounts of the reserve (and obviously the waterfall...with a resident croc & occasional hippo's) The staff are so warm and welcoming, in particular the rangers. We had Norman and Happy, and they were so friendly and obviously very experienced to do their best to make sure you see what you go there to see... the big 5! Food is equally as lovely, even the High Tea is delightful. Only word of warning would be that the transfers company they use was very expensive, and I would recommend sorting a transfer there & back (or your own hire car) before you go... we came from Durban and paid around 3,000 ZAR to get back which was reasonable compared to the 5,600 ZAR we were first quoted.
This was my second visit to Mkuze, and I have stayed at a lot of private game lodges throughout Africa and this is definitely one of the best, and far superior to some of the other lodges nearby. The accommodation is very good, each lodge has a splash pool, and there is a main swimming pool as well. The food is excellent and there is a very nice bar. The ranger and tracker are excellent and we saw both lions and cheetah extremely close, making eye contact with them! It is definitely a place to take overseas visitors who have not been on safari before.
Wow!! Returned after one year and still experienced the truly unique Lodge that we missed so much. Great and friendly staff. Most of them are there for more than 14 years and are still very happy when we spoke to them, well done Management! Food was tops and game drives awesome!! Saw big five twice in 4 day stay, wild dogs was the highlight. Will be back next year with a big group again, keep it up Mkuze Falls!!
"So many good points"
We enjoyed our time at MF very much. The accommodation is first class, if a little dated in some aspects and lacking sufficient storage space in our chalet (No. 6). However, that was compensated for by the view over the waterfall and its plunge pool – unfortunately, because of the current drought and the time of our visit the waterfall was dry. Still, we enjoyed sitting on our balcony watching the buck drinking at the pool, although they had to keep a close eye on the resident crocodile and not be distracted by the circling fish eagle. The food was excellent and the braai was nearly as good as the outside shower that allowed you to clean up and look up (at the Milky Way). We were lucky that Norman, our guide/driver, was a fount of knowledge, esp. about the birdlife, but even he was rather surprised when we were forced to stop the vehicle to allow two wild dogs the cross the road about 30 mts in front of us. It seems that the pair pass through the reserve every couple of years on their journey to/from somewhere. We also had excellent (& several) siting of lion, cheetah and serval. All members of staff are very attentive and do whatever they can to make your stay enjoyable. However, we did feel rather rushed into lunch upon our arrival, which was later than planned due to road works on our route. Prior to departure from the UK, we did e-mail MF to ask for an update on road conditions, but didn’t receive a helpful response. We also felt that at times the staff lacked direction and we couldn’t identity a point of contact and whoever was in charge didn’t make themselves known to us.
"Mkuze Falls "
We have returned to Mkuze Falls for the 5th time over a 9 year period and are never disappointed. Despite a severe drought, Jabu drove us deep into the bush so we could find our favourite sightings of elephant, lion, zebra, giraffe, rhino, buffalo and many more. All the meals with no exception deserves 5 stars and more. Accomodation is outstanding with our favourite being the outdoor shower and extra extra large king size bed. Staff are amazing and always willing to go the extra mile. I am more than happy to recommend this venue to both locals and tourists alike.
