A great base to explore Fraser. Having a young family we appreciated having an air conditioned villa and resort pool to come back to each day to unwind. The resort blends so well with its natural environment and the staff friendly and accommodating.
We spent 5 nights here in January and absolutely loved it. The resort itself is getting on a bit in age now but it clean and well maintained. I would suggest some natural ventilation in the bathroom we stayed in. That aside, it was one of the most relaxing holidays I have had and the island itself is beautiful. Would thoroughly recommend catching a sunset with a cool drink and cheese platter at the Sunset Bar - spectacular! Take insect repellant. Otherwise my only criticism would be more waiter service for guests while lounging around the pool! Will definitely be back.
"Unsafe and Awful"
6 months ago I visited Fraser Island on a day trip from Hervey Bay. I had dinner at Kingfisher Resort . I was struck with the beauty of the resort and planned a return trip. I’m sorry to say I wish I hadn’t. First: Even though it was the middle of summer the hotel charges you for air conditioning. Quite a lot too- I paid $100 . Worse yet- the A/C didn’t work when we arrived. When I went to the front desk with my concern the young lady actually said: “what do you want me to do about it?†I was dumb-founded and answered “fix it or move me to another room.†She answered “well that is not going to happen.†I was pretty irate at that point and demanded my money back for the A/C- at this point she told me she would have someone come down to take a look at it. Eventually a maintenance man showed up- he was very nice and fixed the A/C. I would have loved to depend on cross winds to cool the room but the hotel was not designed to take advantage of the cross-winds. The room was too uncomfortable to not have A/C. Second: instead of curtains our room had wood shutters. They did not work. I traveled 11,000 miles to have a view of a dumpster and a parking lot. The trashmen were very entertained watching me change. Also it was summer and the sun came up at 4:30 am waking me up. It took 2 days to get that fixed. Third: the water temperature was very poorly regulated. You would think you had the temperature correct but then there would be wide swings from freezing cold to extremely hot. On the last day my son had been in the shower for 5 minutes when I heard a scream. I ran into the bathroom and discovered he had a first degree burn from the hot water in the shower. Now he is 29 and it was bad enough that he was burned but imagine if he had been really small? Most hotels have solved the problem of the fluctuations in water temperature in their showers. Fourth: the lock to the back door that went out to the veranda, did not work. Anyone could have walked into my room (we were on the grounds floor) or come in when I was gone and stolen my things. I felt very unsafe in this room. Although this was brought to their attention it was never fixed. Fifth and most important: I have sleep apnea and depend upon a CPAP machine that must be plugged in. There are not electrical plugs anywhere near the beds. I was told the designer decided it would “ruin the esthetic.†After spending a sleepless night (the night after I flew 27 hours to get there!) I demanded that a solution be found. The best they could come up with was taping a long extension cord over to the bed. Needless to say when I got up to go to the bathroom the tape caught on my foot and I fell. I am quite sure that Australia protects people with disabilities and that the failure to provide me with a plug is illegal. I went to the front desk several times to voice my concerns . I was met with annoyance, mild anger, boredom, or disregarded altogether. The staff seemed overworked and unhappy. There was no concern shown to me or the other guests at the front desk. I was accused of “trying to get a better room.†(yes! One that was safe and in working order). This hotel is very expensive. It gives itself 4 stars, yet it considers its guests an annoyance. When I book a room I am mostly interested in a comfortable bed, a safe and clean bathroom and that things work in the room. This hotel failed miserably. I requested a different, safer, hopefully working room several times and was always rudely turned down- even told at one point it was “not a reasonable request.†I can only assume that ALL their rooms are this bad. A minor point is that I came to this eco lodge and had a really horrible view. This could have been so easily fixed. All they had to do was plant a large bush between me and the trash bins. I still would have been wakened by the trash trucks early in the morning but at least in the evening I could have sat out there and it would have felt like I was in an ecolodge. There was plenty of room for some nice plants. I have never given a hotel a rating this bad but believe me- they worked hard for this bad rating. Fraser Island is beautiful. You should go and visit. Do yourself a favor and stay in Hervey Bay and go over for a day trip. Don’t waste your time, your money and your safety in this awful hotel. I would have given it zero stars if that had been possible .
"Could be better"
Kingfisher Bay has all of the potential to be a great resort but it fell short with a lack of coherent organisation and very relaxed attitude from staff. Although an eco resort the addition of fans throughout would please the summer tourists.
"Great two days"
Great time had by all. Staff are really friendly and very helpful. Beauty spot tour is a must if you do not have lots of time to see everything. The resort needs a bit of updating in places but very clean and I would definitely go back.
