The rooms and the hotel have just been refurbished. Very well kept gardens and lovely outlook over the hunter valley and paddocks. Not much for the kiddies to do though. Only issue is noisy refrigerator. Not too bad during the day but at 2:00 o'clock in the morning it is a loud drone. We had to turn it off at the power point. Thing is, the hotel staff know about the issue.
"Lovely place; beautiful grounds."
Due to an overbooking elsewhere, we found ourselves at the Sebel, and do not regret the fact it was changed. We benefited by receiving one of the luxury suites and breakfast each day, and as a result got to experience more of the Sebel than we otherwise would. I would recommend this place to couples. There are acres to walk around, with a vineyard to explore on site. We made use of our romantic in-room spa, enjoyed the bar and social areas and appreciated how close the hotel was generally to the vineyards. The indoor pool looked very generous and suitable for families, so we didn't use it. The on-site gym was weaker than most hotels, but may be sufficient for others. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. We arrived on the tail-end of an extremely busy weekend and appreciate the reception we received. My wife was also unwell, and the staff were willing to accommodate us to help her feel comfortable. In our room, we appreciated having access to the HDMI ports on the TV. This is useless to some travellers, other hotels do their very best to block all access. The fact we could use our large TV in the way we wanted to, was fantastic. Breakfast was fantastic, but like most buffet places, way too pricey for us to have paid for if it wasn't given to use complimentary. The only disappointment we had was with the wifi. Many hotels offer premium wifi, which is ridiculous. Others offer a free portion, usually 100mb or 1GB. Sebel we were happy to see offer it free, unmetered. However, it didn't work. Either the quota was used, or too many people were trying to use it. Either way, it was unusable, even for basic email. If you offer a service, labelling it "Complimentary" isn't code for "This might not work".
We stayed for one night, April 2017. The rooms are nicely decorated and the views are stunning. Staff were friendly and polite. Very good location for the Pokolbin winery tours. With staying only one night, we didn't really get to explore the grounds, but from our balcony, everything looked very well-kept. All peaceful and relaxing! But as others have pointed out there are quite a few things that make this hotel only 'ok' rather than great. I'm an Accor Gold member. Usually this means a free room upgrade on availability, but I'm not sure if I actually did. My hunch is no. What's annoying though is that the resort seemed fairly empty, and I should have been told either way. Another Accor benefit at the Sebel is a free bottle of water, which I thought seemed a bit stingy! However the only bottle in our room had a big tag on it that said $4.50. I asked about this and apparently they had forgotten to put the 'free' one in there. No extra amenities, slippers, bath salts, shower cap etc. Ordered room service at around 6pm and the next morning our tray was still outside our door. These little things do matter, especially when comparing to other resorts in the same price range. My main complaint was around breakfast though. For $30 per person, it was little more than continental, and if you wanted 'proper' coffee, it was an extra $4.50. Soggy bacon, watery eggs, burnt croissants, dry bread and some cornflakes. Meh. I used my points on this stay, and I'm glad I did. It certainly would not have been worth the $318 for the room and breakfast.
"High expectation. "
You know that saying never judge a book by its cover? This is a very good example. Looks great from a marketing point of view but for $1400 for 3 nights is just not worth it. Greg Natale did a great job to give the Sebel a interior face lift but everything else lets it down. Let me explain. On arrival my bed sheets where wet. The house keeping are lazy. The mini bar is never replaced. Tea and coffee cups are not replaced instead left in the room dirty. The room is dusty. The phone is so dusty it looks like something out of a movie. The outside of the building needs a little cleaning full of spider webs and moskito nests. The buffet breakfast is just plain average. Fruit cut on onion chopping boards making it taste like onion. Might as well put onions to eat rather than fruit. The bar. WOW I have no words. I dont even have the energy to write about it. There is a big management problem here I'm really not sure if this place will survive. I won't be back here. It's made me question why I came to the hunter valley in the first place. Shangri la needs to move to the hunter!
"Lovely stay, but lack of full amenities"
We booked this hotel as it is one of the Accor hotel brands. The hotel was lovely, beautiful, convenient location, good bedding and lines. The bathroom amenities are good, but limited. The service was also limited as we had to find our way to check in, carry our own bags and find our own rooms. It was my first time staying in a hotel in Australia and I was a bit disappointed in the service standard including room amenities compare to what we have in Thailand. For this price range, I expected full amenities such as shower cap, slippers, toothbrush and toothpaste and a bit of service. Maybe the hospitality here is different what I have experienced in Thailand. We had breakfast one morning and they had a good selection. The staff seemed to be limited as it took time for us to get seated in restaurants at breakfast and dinner. An after dinner drink at a bar was nice as the bar was beautiful and homey. Would be nice if complimentary bottled drinking water is provided. Overall, we had a nice stay.
