Had a wonderful stay. Excellent room, wonderful service, great facilities and beautiful food. Loved the 5.00pm drinks with other guests. Very friendly and helpful staff. Thank for a relaxing break.Looking forward to coming back!
"Great place to relax"
We spent a week there and everything was so easy and relaxing. The room we had was awesome and the air con was a blessing. On arrival, Colin was so helpful pointing out everything and taking our bags to the room. All the staff were friendly and they went out of their way to accommodate us. For example we arrived the night before New Years Eve and their restaurant was booked out, however the assistant manager made a space for us and it was well worth the money we paid for the evening. The food was outstanding and to cap it off the manager Wayne went around to all the patrons that night, chatting and making sure everything was good. The two pools were fantastic and loved the sorbets served in the afternoon. Another highlight was the evening ritual of canapes and punch, which we was so nice, couldn't stop at one glass. Other aspect of the Reef House was all the staff was hard working, from the cleaners to the maintenance staff who keep the gardens beautifully. Always friendly and happy to help at the drop of a hat. A great time and definitely going back there again!!
"Good but could be great!"
Palm Cove is a smart stretch of sandy beach home to people and a few crocs apparently. Tropical climate makes for hot sunny humid days with the odd thunder storm and crazy rain. The Reef House Hotel is colonial style impressive building with a wide reception, bar, restaurant and lounge to greet you as you walk up the decking from the road and the beach. A perfect spot, a few meters from the beach, half way along the beach road with shops, bars, restaurants and tourist information around it. The whole resort has kept as many natural features as possible with sometimes building built around some of the old impressive trees. This also applies to The Reef House...it has kept as much of the tropical landscape as possible around the pools and the accompdation areas. Reception is cool and swift with the team taking you on a short trip around the hotel on your way to your room. Rooms are basic for a 5 star hotel....but the hotel has several pools, a handy guest laundry and a lovely spa. A nice touch is an honesty bar where you can have canapes at sundown with the general manager....although we never quite made it. The Reef House has all the ingredients for a great place however a sad lack of attention to the details lets it down. In some areas nature has overtaken the ability to keep it in check leading to some areas around the pools looking un loved. Details such as the lougers around the pool have really seen better days....and are not very clean. The main bar is a lovely space as is the reataurant but again small finishing touches make all the difference and are expected in a 5 star hotel. The team are polite and friendly but lack the confidence and experience to deliver to or over expectations of such a hotel of this class. Dinner was good but again a little more attention to detail would make it very good. We understood that they were under pressure as a storm arrived out of the blue and the team had to re configure tables so we cut them some slack. By no means is The Reef House a bad hotel, we had a great time but it could have been exceptional with some attention to detail, some extra cleaning in the rooms, some extra maintence, some extra training of the young team in what is expected by world travellers that may have come via the absolute service focus of the Middle East or South Asian hotels. We travelled a long way and wanted to be spoilt. We were at best looked after and we made the best gin and tonics in the self service bar.....that should never be the case!
"Great place Great Staff"
We Just spent a week here and had a great time, From the check in with Karla and then the gardener Stuart delivered our bags to the room. Our kids loved the pool and enjoyed the free sorbets in the afternoon. Stuart the gardener was always willing to help us with any questions the house keepers were very efficient and happy to assist with extra towels when we asked. We only ate in the restaurant once as it was a bit out of our price range with 2 kids. The pools are very clean and cooling as the weather was extremely hot Palm Cove has plenty of restaurants and places coffee and they have a kids play ground just up the road Over all it was a great holiday
My partner and I stayed at the Reef House using the 3-Night Package Deal which cost $1554 in total. This was to include a spa voucher and a dinner voucher for two, a continental breakfast daily, access to the Brigadier Thompson bar where canapés and punch was served at 5pm, sorbet by the pool and complimentary use of bicycles. With the exception of the spa and dinner vouchers, my understanding is that the extra services are extended to all Reef House guests, regardless of what package is chosen. When we arrived we were met by the lovely concierge, Jackie, who gave us the quick run-down of where everything was. Unfortunately, this is where the good service ends. The room was nice, pretty average. Paid for a king-size bed, but had the king-size configuration of two singles pushed together - so one of us ended up sleeping in the crack of this 'configuration'. Our air-conditioner would only work intermittently and leaked, and our fridge was broken. So the complimentary bottle of champagne we received was warm when we decided to open it (on the last night - or would have brought it up earlier!) The Reef House restaurant is not worth the visit. Food is almost as bad as the service, which was lacklustre, rushed and blasé. We went to the front desk to change our dinner reservation back an hour, but was ignored for quite some time (even after the General Manager made eye contact with me). The same man then reluctantly asked what we wanted, but seemed to pay us off when we asked to change the time. Unsurprisingly, when we arrived for dinner, they had forgotten to change the time, and had the nerve to insinuate that we were an hour late. The complimentary canapés were average at best. although the punch was quite nice. The best part of our stay was the spa experience, and the pool area is good as well. Upon check-out, despite not being asked how my stay was - I told the concierge about these issues. No known further action was taken by management. I still maintain that overall the visit was nice - just not '$500 a night' nice. I can deal with old buildings and bad air-con, but I can't stand poor service.
