Over Orpheus Island

"vacation of a lifetime"

We stayed at Orpheus Island in November 2017. We enjoyed our time here at so many levels. On our flight from Brisbane to Townsville, our luggage was delayed, so our helicopter took us to Orpheus Island with plans to bring are luggage when it arrived at the Townsville airport. The island does have a small shop where we were able to purchase necessities, such as a toothbrush and swimwear. The island went out of their way to bring our luggage the next day, by using a larger helicopter that would be able to carry the extra weight of our luggage alone with other passengers. We stayed in the south room. It was quiet and private. The staff was so kind and were always there for every need. The food was always fabulous. The chefs sauces were the best we've ever had. We tried things we had never tried before and it was always delicious. And so fresh. The daily excursions for snorkeling were always perfect. On the last morning, the staff made it possible for us to take an excursion to the outer reef before our helicopter ride back to Townsville. That will always be one of the most memorable things we have ever done. We recommend the outer reef if you have time. We thank the staff for making it happen.

"Return to paradise"

A too long period since our last stay at Orpheus Island. It won't be so long before we return again! Our group consisted of three adults and three children. Starts with a 30 minute helicopter flight from Townsville and ends with a return flight where we did our best to spot rays and turtles (not whale season) Stayed in clean and comfortable chalets, looking across grass lawns to the sandy beach. View interrupted only by palm trees and hammocks. Excellent swimming pool on waters edge It's a small and exclusive resort. Quiet. Various water activities Food was first class. I confess to being a fussy eater (and allergic to shellfish) and it was never too much trouble to the staff to provide alternatives Service was excellent. A mainly younger staff, always friendly, efficient and helpful. As has been noted by an earlier reviewer, the staff were incredible with the kids

"Wilkinson Family Visit"

What a fantastic resort! We had a wonderful time and were so well looked after by the whole Orpheus team. It was VERY hard to leave. Special thanks to Chrissie, Tegan and Ross for the dives/snorkelling. Can't wait to come back.

"Incredible with kids!"

This was a splurge for us. We have 3 boys (9/11/13) and we wanted to stay around the reef. This was one of the few places that had snorkeling anytime and allowed the kids to go off on their own. Did it ever! We justified the helicopter getting there as it's own excursion. Kids loved every part of it! The freedom, the little sharks that they 'played' with, the pool, the chess, the daily excursions. What I was impressed with was how good the staff was with the boys. They have such a hospitality mindset and it could go into being an all inclusive resort - all the staff have an attitude of getting you what you want/need. Food is it's own review. If you are a foodie, and want a nice resort, not sure there's another place to go. The 4 course meals are so well prepared, breakfast and lunch were almost as good! We had 14 people there when we were there, and I believe they shared they had 28 staff members - makes it a pretty incredible experience. Luckily there were other kids there which made it great for the boys. As I started, it was a major splurge for us - and it was worth it for the memory. (we just tell the kids not to share they were at a private island) ;-)

"Perfect Easter Break"

We heard about the island from some fellow travellers at Sal Salis at Ningaloo Reef last year and decided to do it this year. We had a similar break at Lizard Island 2 years ago, so there was always going to be a comparison, though now having been there, they aren't really comparable. Whilst up front they appear to offer a similar experience, the actual experience is very different. If there is a single word it might be that Orpheus is more relaxed, but enjoy both I say. I like places where everything is properly organised, and it is absolutely well organised at Orpheus. Every staff member is across everything with every guest, and that is quite special. I like that the relationship between the helicopter transfer company, Nautilus, and the resort is close and that results in flexible scheduling and a seamless transfer once you arrive (in this case, at Townsville Airport). There is something a bit special about helicoptering your last leg to a resort. Flying at around 500- 1,000 feet over the ocean with the destination growing in the windshield is pretty cool. There are a lot of reviews here about the things to do, and the facilities available. I would only add that all are seamlessly and cheerfully provided by extremely well trained and genuinely nice staff. There is a close obvservance of guest safety with regard to activities, but not the babying that goes on in some places. Let's face it, adventure is adventure, and should feel that way. Some highlights for us were the half day Robinson Crusoe spent on Pelorus island, though author Willem Dafoe never anticipated champagne and tapas to ease the loneliness; dining with the tides special romantic dinner; ALL of the the meals - which at times equalled the fare that rates 2 or more hats in Sydney; and just being able to wander down to the wharf in the early evening to watch reef sharks chasing the fish population around. One thing that I am especially grateful for was the great marine staff teaching my partner how to duck-dive which will make our snorkelling in the future much more exciting for her. Always good if you can come away from an experience with something new. Review outcome: Loved it! Recommendation: Do it! Overall Feedback: Thank you!
