Over Orpheus Island

"Heaven on Earth"

Some people say the Great Barrier Reef is like Heaven on Earth. If that is so then Orpheus Island is the Pearly Gates..... from the moment one steps aboard the helicopter you are captivated by Mother Nature's beauty below. After a short mind blowing flight over the carpet of coastal canefields and tropical rainforest the vista gives way to the expanse of the Coral Sea dotted with islands - Dunk, Bedarra, Wheeler, Coombe, The Brookes and the Jurassic looking Hinchinbrook Island. It becomes evident, that this is not just a transfer, it is one of the most scenic flights along the 24,000 kms of Australia's coastline. Simply stunning. On touch down at Orpheus one is mesmerized by the variety of shades of blue before you. Despite having been there 4 times already I still could not help pulling out my camera and going nuts. The staff culture and genuine service is what sets Orpheus above all other GBR luxury island resorts. The staff genuinely care about the guest experience and work tirelessly to provide a superlative product. Attentiveness while not being over bearing or intrusive so guests can truly relax is the style of service one can expect. The food is some of the best I have eaten in any of Australia's Luxury Lodges and best city restaurants. The freshness and visual appeal of the plates of art are followed by so much taste that it spurs a lot of conversation during meal times. The chefs can hold their head high and would be an asset in any Michelin star kitchen. The array of activities on offer are fabulous. We snorkeled over 3ft long giant clams, swam with manta rays, had a picnic lunch on the boat with a mother and calf Humpback Whale frolicking 100 meters away from us. We enjoyed morning exercise on Stand Up Paddle Boards in the calm waters while watching families of sting rays beneath us in the crystal clear waters. A low tide walk with Lex onto the tidal flats was very educational. Do yourself a favor and book in today before the rest of the world hears about this hidden gem.

"Luxury at its best"

I stayed here for 2 nights and it just wasn't enough time. The island is so laid back but for its luxurious nature, not at all pretentious. The rooms are tastefully decorated and all staff I encountered were friendly and so knowledgeable on the island. There is so much to do and see, you will never get bored. We had a day taking the boat out exploring, snorkelling and a picnic lunch on the beach. The marine life literally comes right up to the shore. And the food, amazing!! Definitely an island to consider when chosing your next holiday.

"Luxury and Service"

Outstanding service. Mouth watering food. Wonderful activities. Thanks Lex for the tidal walk. Ross and Jennifer for the fishing trip. Cal for the snorkelling. Louise for the photo bomb. Christie for the welcome. Daniel for the food. Yummy. Enjoyed the walks and kayaking and exploring.

"True paradise"

We flew round trip by helicopter from Cairns to Orpheus on June 16. Stayed 3 nights in the amazing paradise! The staff upgraded our room to a suite which was very kind of them. There were only 8 guests total on the island for 2 of our three night stay. Received very personalize and attentive service at every turn. Met with a champagne toast. A bottle of champagne plus 3 bottles of wine in our mini fridge, multiple soft drinks and water. The meals were of Michelin quality. I had to take photos of each meal as it was just over the top beautiful art, as well as being just so delicious. I am allergic to shellfish and they were meticulous about attending to that request. Beds were scrumptious with a view right into the infinity pool and Coral Sea. This is a place to relax at the end of our 3 wks in Australia. Would rate a 10 if that was possible!

"A little piece of paradise"

We were on Orpheus for our anniversary at the end of January this year and had a wonderful time. Our adventure began with a scenic helicopter flight to Orpheus ($1200 for 2 people) On arrival we were welcomed and taken to the lounge where sparkling wine and a cool towel were waiting for us and then we had a chat with the Chef regarding our likes and dislikes. We were then taken to our room where our luggage was waiting for us as well as a bottle of wine and a cheese platter. Our Room: While it was more expensive than we would normally spend on a five night holiday it was worth it. Although at $1400 a night I expected the room to be a bit more luxurious. We stayed in a North Beachfront Room which had a great view of the ocean however if I was to return I would choose to stay in a South Beachfront Room. They are a little bit larger with a couch which would have been nice to have. There really wasn’t anywhere to sit in our room with only one lounge chair in the corner. If you have the money a South Suite would be fantastic. However we didn’t spend much time in our room so it didn’t matter too much. The Food: It was amazing and we looked forward to every meal. It was suggested by other guests that a basket of fruit and a selection of nibbles by the bar to help yourself would have been a nice touch but we didn’t really feel the need to snack between meals. I have read of people complaining about the drinks included in the cost but we were pretty happy with Sav Blanc and sparkling provided. However considering we had mentioned we drink Moscato when asked what our preferences were before arrival we were disappointed to find no Moscato available. Also a cocktail of the day included in the package would have been a nice touch. The Staff: All were very friendly, helpful and attentive. There was more staff than guests when we were there although that wouldn’t be too hard as when we arrived with another couple we were the only guests there until the next day when another couple arrived. We were lucky the other guests on the island were very friendly and great to catch up with for a chat throughout the day and pre-dinner drinks. I think the island experience would be very different depending on who else was on the island. I can’t imagine it crowded with other people (even limited to 28) or children running around. I think it would suit being an 18 plus resort The Activities: Every day there was an optional planned activity in the morning, a guided walk around the island one day and snorkelling trips on the other days we stayed. We loved the snorkelling trips which were not too far from the island. All equipment was supplied at no extra cost. We went on a walk to Picnic bay one morning which was a bit of a hike and I was a little disappointed when we finally got there as there really wasn’t anywhere to sit and have a picnic, it was very rocky. Lazing by the infinity pool was a regular past time for us but we did venture out on the paddle boards, kayaks and dingy as well. We’d definitely go back again but at a different time of year. Going at the end of January the humidity and flies (they bite!) was a bit unpleasant. Also there is no air-conditioning in the dining area so it was pretty hot and uncomfortable. It would be nice to have somewhere to be able to enjoy and drink and a meal away from the heat and humidity. Overall a very special place to spend five nights. Thank you Ross, Jennifer and the team of staff on the island for a lovely holiday.
