Verstopt in de Hazard Bay aan de westkant van het eiland ligt de lodge uitgestrekt langs het strand. "The best option for relax and recover"

After organizing a wedding in Argentina living in Australia and getting married, all we needed for a honeymoon was to not worry about anything, enjoy and relax. We thought Orpheus was going to be a good option, and we weren’t wrong. Everything was absolutely great. The scenery is amazing, the staff is always ready to help. I’m a bit fuzzy about food and everybody (especially Louise) were looking after me and making sure I was happy with the food. The alcohol included in the all-inclusive plan is very decent. We didn’t have to upgrade at all. I think one of the most outstanding things is that you feel some kind of magic: your glass is always full, your bedroom is done after you come back from breakfast, and your snorkeling gear/picnic esky are always in the place where they are supposed to be. And if you are going out on a dinghy or kayak, they are always ready waiting for you at the agreed time. I know it’s not only magic, it’s the quality of service that is just awesome. As part of the resort activities, we went on a couple of snorkels around the island that were amazing. We are not the kind of people that will have this kind of holiday every year, but we decided we were going to go for it for this special occasion. The price could be a bit scary, but after coming back, I strongly believe you can’t have that level of service for less money. It worth every cent! We had an amazing time at Orpheus, and could have the recovery time we needed after a hectic wedding time. We felt 100% looked after :D

"Just Amazing"

For those like me who dream of a luxury island getaway where you can be waited upon, eat, drink, sunbake, see the reef and marine life, and go fishing; this place is the goods. Let me break it down for you: Being Waited Upon: From the helicopter pilots, to all the staff on the island, everyone wants the best for the guests. The helicopter company (Nautilus) is owned by the same owner as the Island. This works for the guests because the transfers happen pretty seamlessly. The pilots/ground staff meet you at the airport, and sort out your bags. The ride is informative and friendly. The staff on island tracks in the inbound helicopter, so staff are waiting for you when you arrive. The bags disappear from the helicopter and appear again in your room. Even though there was another couple with us on the helicopter, the bags weren't mixed up. The cleaning staff intuitively know when you are not in the room, and we came back from breakfast each day to find that the room had magically been straightened out. The restaurant staff are always ready to bring you a glass of something by the pool, at meal times, whenever. The marine and activities folks were keen to get you involved. The managers of the resort meet and are around and talk to the guests. They have years of experience working on Lizard Is, and Orpheus is benefiting from that experience. Eating and Drinking: We found the standard drinks in the included package had 4 beers, 2 whites and 3 reds, including Coke range of soft drinks and juices. This was more than plenty for us, and the quality was fine. We didn't end up ordering other drinks. There's a bar fridge in your room with wine and beer too.. it's all included. Some evenings there was a cocktail hour and the staff made a cocktail of their own creation. The food was amazing - every lunch and dinner was like something from Masterchef. In fact our palettes were not as refined as the food on the menu, and we had to end up asking for something simpler (like chips) - and the kitchen was more than happy to sort that out. Lunchtimes can be substituted for picnics (if you decide to take a dinghy) which had wraps, smoked salmon, prawns, soft and blue cheeses, wine and beer. Was amazing. You won't go hungry or thirsty so be prepared for weight gain. Sun, Swim and Marine Life: When we visited Orpheus there was an option to go to the outer reef. We didn't take it in the end. My spouse is from South America, and her comment was that the fringing reef around Orpheus is better than any reef she had seen in Venezuela or Mexico. As long as the visibility is good, the quality of the corals and fish life is fantastic around the island. The resort runs guided tours on some days for snorkelling. If you want to take a dinghy or kayak and visit another place yourself, then that option works well too. There are buoys in various locations. Notable mentions are the 'clam gardens' which have lots of enormous clams (they were everywhere), and Yank Jetty which is in a fishing exclusion zone so there are lots of fish just under the jetty. The main jetty at the resort has resident barrumundi and black tip reef sharks. Some Giant Trevally also came in for a feed one night. Some of the species we saw also included turtles, stingrays, and shovelnose rays. There's lots of places to find sun around the pool - the infinity pool is amazing - very large and nicely built, or on a private beach somewhere if you take the kayaks or go for a walk past the helipad at the resort. Fishing: If you like fishing you can go on a charter. However it's also possible to fish from the dinghies. I preferred to fish from the kayaks around the edge of the reef and in the mangroves. The resort doesn't like you fishing near their jetty because of the resident 'pet' fish there, but there's plenty of options nearby. Species caught just near the resort from the kayaks included small GTs, spanish flag, barracuda, fingermark bream, sweetlip, coral trout, various cods. I took my own small travel rod. There's restrictions for getting gear onto the helicopter, but if you can manage it and like to fish light, its well worth it. Other stuff: There's not many 'large' animals on the island. There's no dangerous snakes, there are no kangaroos or wallabies but there are bandicoots. There's a lot of rabbits and frogs (at night only or the frogs appear after rain). Jen the gardener has been there the longest she's good for a chat about the history and how the island has changed. She reckons the island is getting better and better under the current owner and managers.

"Island paradise"

We spent part of our honeymoon at Orpheus Island and it was better than we could have imagined. From the moment we stepped off the helicopter from Townsville, every detail was perfect - it was pure relaxation. The resort is immaculately maintained and luxurious, but perfectly complements the natural beauty of the island. The staff is so friendly and accommodating without feeling too stuffy or formal, and they went out of their way to help with everything from food and drink requests to planning activities and excursions. The food is amazing - every meal was memorable and unique! The snorkeling near the island and use of the motorized dinghies makes for an incredible day where you can explore the island and have an entire beach to yourself, and we got a lot of use out of the kayaks and paddleboards too. An excursion to the outer reef is a must - we had never dived before but the watersports team helped us with a practice dive in the pool and then made us feel so comfortable on our dives out on the reef. It was an incredible experience and an absolute must if you visit Orpheus. We are already talking about a return trip!

"The Best Island Resort in Australia"

So often you read reviews of resorts like this but they do not live up to the hype. This is not the case with Orpheus! Most people come to Orpheus by helicopter from Townsville but we came from Cairns because we wanted to see as much of the local scenery as possible. We were not disappointed as we crossed firstly the hinterland to the south of Cairns and then out over the barrier reef, passing other islands to land conveniently on the doorstep of the resort. Orpheus is all about friendly first class service and this starts when you are greeted by Jen and Ross, the managers of the resort. It is clear that these two have a vision of what needs to be done to create a holiday experience which is second to none. No request is too hard to be fulfilled and friendly but professional staff are the backbone of this resort. Having a maximum of only 28 guests really helps in this regard. But this is only one reason why Orpheus is the best in Australia. The other is the food. As food goes, I have never had a culinary experience like it, in any resort around the world. Most resorts have buffets for breakfast and a la carte for lunch/dinner. At Orpheus, the chefs provide a huge choice of a la carte options for breakfast (or you can ask for anything you want). Lunch was tapas style, with every day providing a feast from a different country. But dinner was the icing on the cake (no pun intended). Each night we were presented with what can only be described as a 4 course creation, with tastes so diverse that nothing was repeated during the whole 7 days we were there. Don't worry if you have dietary needs, the chefs cater for everyone and will vary each meal to suit (even giving you a personal menu). I am very keen on drinking good red wines but we found the house wines to be quite acceptable and only ordered special wines on one or two occasions. The rooms are decorated in what I would call modern beach house style. We had a South room which had its own covered verandah which was great for sitting and reading or just drinking. The rooms appear to have been very recently renovated. They have lots of space and are very comfortable. In terms of activities, snorkelling is top of the list for us and while there are limited opportunities for this close to the resort, they run regular (free) snorkel trips to other areas close by - a great way to see a lot of different corals/fish etc. Carly and Tegan were terrific in this regard, doing all in there power to organise memorable experiences for us. The trip to the outer reef is well worth it when it is organised but this is an additional cost. We also took a dingy to nearby beaches on a couple of days and the chef packed us a picnic lunch with wine etc. This is a great way to get away from it all and relax. Finally I need to mention the Spa. It is only small but Sasha does a great job - one of the best resort massages we have had. We have been to both Bedarra and Lizard Islands in the last year and while the service at Bedarra matches Orpheus, its location and snorkelling etc is not as good. Lizard probably has better coral/fish but its service has gone down hill (probably because many of the staff have come to Orpheus) and it is a much bigger resort with not the friendly feel of Orpheus. I am now trying to find time to plan a return trip to Orpheus with all of our family.

"Chilling Out in Style"

Orpheus island is all about relaxing in style on a tropical island right on the Great Barrier Reef. This resort has a very laid back feel that goes hand in hand with being in tropical north Queensland where nothing is too much trouble and everyone has a smile. Our family loved our stay here. Staff on the island and also our helicopter pilot were fantastic. After being greeted off the helipad and whisked to the resort lounge for some refreshing bubbles you are introduced to the chef who takes the time to prepare something to your liking for all your meals. Our room was impressive with a fab beach chic look and very comfy king-size bed. All meals were great from breakfast to lunch and dinner although we found the 8am breakfast a bit late for early risers like us. Big tip: take advantage of grabbing a small boat (it's free and they tell you how to drive it) and heading over to the clam garden or over to the far jetty for amazing snorkeling. You can also grab a picnic and get to one of the remote beaches for a romantic lunch and a swim. We only stayed for two nights but many other guests were staying here for a week, there is plenty to keep you entertained for a longer stay if you want to do that (we did by the end of our stay!)
