Over Orpheus Island

"Orpheus highly recommended"

   23-04-2017
We just spent 5 nights at Orpheus Island over Easter, which we thoroughly enjoyed. I agree with all the positive comments from other reviewers about the high quality of the staff, the accommodation, the food, the helicopter travel, the location and the activities. I'm going to see if I can write a review that doesn't simply repeat everything that other people have already said about those aspects of the experience and instead try to provide some useful tips for anyone who has already decided to stay at Orpheus Island and just wants to know some more about it. First, it seemed to me that all the accommodation was fine, but the prices are a good indication of the relativities between the different options. We took the north beachfront villa, which had 2 large bedrooms and a central living room/kitchen where there was an extra bed, which our teenager found very comfortable. This villa faces right onto the infinity pool, but with some garden plants in between the pool and the villa, so there was still adequate privacy. We had another couple travelling with us and the resort accommodated them right next door to us. The booking process was very easy and reliable. The fact that a complimentary laundry service is available daily meant that we did not need to pack too many clothes, even though we sometimes got through several outfits per day by covering ourselves in fishing bait etc. This helps keep the bags light for travelling by helicopter. By using light and squashy duffle bags, we easily packed our bags into the helicopter. The resort also laundered for us our stinger suits on a daily basis and had them ready for us in our boat the next day. Our primary reason for selecting Orpheus Island was the variety of activities available. The resort sells itself a bit short on its website about this. Really, you could stay there for several weeks and not run out of different things to do. My teenage son's favourite activity was fishing, and there were several excellent spots for this. You just need to book a 'tinnie' (a small boat) and the resort will load onto it the bait, fishing tackle, drinks, ice, chart showing which fish can be kept and where to fish. Afterwards, the chef can cook your fish. My favourite island activity is snorkelling. The famous giant clam garden is quite close to the resort, so many people go there in a boat by themselves, but we chose to go with a guide so as to make the most efficient use of our time. There are also several giant clams as well as a wide variety of coral and tropical fish a little further north at Cattle Bay. Venturing out with a guide, we also visited various other islands to the north and south of Orpheus Island for snorkelling trips. Each spot is quite different, so there is something for everyone. We also tried a couple of different walks, which are pleasant to do at around sunset time, for classic sunset views. We saw plenty of wildlife on our walks, particularly sulphur-crested cockatoos. The resort will be constructing some more walks shortly. It is not necessary to take a guide for the walks, but it is helpful to have someone show you where to start and what the options are. Take water, wear covered shoes that have some tread and use some sunscreen and a hat. If winds are over about 15km/h, it becomes difficult to do the longer boat trips to the outer reef or Hinchinbrook Island, because the boat has to travel through some unprotected sections to reach these locations. It is still fine to do boat trips even with winds at 20km/h in more protected areas. We found it was useful to have pre-booked a guide and boat to do private trips. This costs extra, but provides a lot more flexibility than doing the complimentary trips as part of a group. We also pre-booked our boats to do fishing excursions. Each of the guides was fabulous: knowledgeable, helpful, flexible to try different things and with a sense of humour. On a rainy morning, we still fished. The boats have covers, which are ok for light showers, although it would not be pleasant with heavy rain and winds. The resort does have some indoor activities for rainy days. Temperatures were just perfect for snorkelling in mid-April. The infinity pool temperatures were also quite comfortable at this time of year. At night it was sometimes quite cool and breezy, so a light jacket or light sweater was a good idea. The infinity pool is just lovely and there are pleasant stretches of lawn and garden nearby. The resort is family-friendly. If you are a person who can't stand children, don't go. I love having children around, so for me, this is a bonus feature. However, for most of the activities, I suggest that this is an island where it helps if the kids are about 10 years old and up, because there is more for older kids to be able to do, rather than younger kids. The restaurant experience is also not really geared towards small children, with dinners being degustation style etc. One night we had a special wine-pairing dinner available as an option for an extra cost, and if this is on offer when you visit, I recommend it. The wines were well chosen and beautifully matched to the foods and I would like to put in a special word for the professionalism of the sommelier, Eva. If I was going back there, I would take a few extra snacks for our room. The resort does provide some snacks at the bar, but not as much variety as resorts that have a kiosk, so I prefer to have my own and I also prefer to have snacks in my room if I am hungry before breakfast. There is a fridge. Ross and Jennifer are doing some amazing things with this place. I hope that readers of this review will enjoy it as much as we did.

"Truly outstanding "

We got married on this beautiful island. Everything was perfect and organized to our full satisfaction. Jennifer & Ross are superb managers and hosts. The daily food variety and quality is a true paradise for every foodie Excellent team and service

"Treat Yourself"

   20-03-2017
We were lucky enough to spend three amazing nights on Orpheus Island but next time we will stay longer. From the moment we entered the Nautilus hangar, we were treated like royalty and never lifted a finger to do anything. Arriving at the Island is hard to put into words, the helicopter leans over slightly, makes a right turn and as it straightens up we cruised into a postcard-like beach front. Stepping off the helicopter we were warmly welcomed by the Island managers (Ross and Jen are fantastic), offered a glass of bubbles by the most incredible staff who are polite, friendly and so good at what they do. Our room had everything we needed, air-conditioned, very clean and a great view. Having said that we didn’t spend much time relaxing in our room as there were plenty of activities to keep us entertained. We were taken to the outer reef for a scuba dive and snorkel which was a day to remember. There was plenty to eat and drink regardless of what we were doing, we were never left wanting. The food and dining is exceptional, I cannot remember eating food this good, anywhere. We indulged ourselves with 'Dining with the Tides’ and ‘Wine Pairing’ which was simply outstanding. Sorry Bali…never going back. Orpheus is my new holiday destination. To Ross, Jen and the rest of the team, thanks for making this our best holiday ever.

"Absolute Paradise"

If you are considering visiting Orpheus Island I suggest you go! The food was amazing the scenery was great and the staff went above and beyond our expectations. There is plenty to do, or if you prefer, you can sit, relax and watch the sunset! It must be one of Queensland's best kept secrets, however it is worth discovering.

"We will be back!"

   19-03-2017
From touch down to take off, our stay on Orpheus Island was perfect. The accommodation was great, the food a real culinary adventure and drinks in the spectacular horizon pool was a great end to each day. We snorkelled, went scuba diving, fishing and hiking around the island, and there was still lots of things to do when we had to go. Thanks to Jen and Ross and their staff, they made the stay so relaxing and enjoyable. They would appear from nowhere with a cold drink or a suggestion as to what to do tomorrow, and then disappear again. We will be back for sure!!
