"Very disappointing in bad need of upgrade in all departments"
My travelling friend and I decided to stay at the Holiday Inn Old Sydney because it was close to where we were catching our cruise ship. Unfortunately that was a bad decision! We had no view of the harbour, the service by reception staff left a lot to be desired and the rooms were absolutely horrible! Stains on the carpet, dead flies and moths on floor, rubbish under the bed and sheets were so rough (no need for a body scrub As we have found, in many hotels, the little things are those things that make the difference. Our first impressions of our 4th floor were not good. The furniture was tired looking, scratched the fridge door didn't shut properly and the noise from the street made it impossible to sleep properly.. There was no room directory in the room or room service menu I asked at the front desk for one. I was told the menu was in a draw. We looked everywhere and still could not find either of the room directory nor the room service menu! As I travel quite a lot I try to be fair on my reviews but I am afraid this one is going to be negative. MAJOR improvements in upgrading, customer service and just general cleaning need to be addressed immediately!
The hotel is in a great location with plenty to do in the Rocks within walking distance and the ferry, bus and train station a short walk away. There are great views from the roof top pool, but the view of the Opera House will be blocked if a passenger ship is berthed at the cruise terminal. The staff were friendly, the rooms were modern and clean. We had a quiet night with no road or street noise.
We were very happy at this hotel, the location is great for the city, Circular Quay, The Rocks etc. Our bedroom looked out onto the Quayside with views of the cruise liners. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The staff in reception were very friendly and helpful. No complaints here at all.
"great location, friendly and unpretentious"
We needed a hotel pre and post cruise. This hotel was ideal for that purpose but would have been equally ideal without the cruise given it's great location by the harbour and bridge. The room was spacious and even had a view of the bridge from the bed! The staff were friendly and the drinks voucher for use in the small bar was put to good use. For cruisers, the opportunity to walk to the ship from the hotel was close to unique?!
"Very disappointing "
I try to give positive reviews where possible. I have given very few negative reviews over hotels. I have traveled to 25 countries and am generally very happy because I do homework before booking and tend to be positive and optimistic. This will be a negative review. Like so many hotel stays it's the little things that make quite a bit of difference. First impressions of our 6th floor harbour facing room were not good. The furniture was scratched, tired looking and the fridge cupboard door doesn't shut properly. The noise from the street is very noticeable. The TV wasn't working all night because of a lightening strike. At 4:30 we were told it was being worked on, same at 6:30. When I phoned at 8:30 we were told the technician had just arrived. So I thought I would read only to find the reading light wasn't working. It was fixed by a worker within 30 minutes. Not being able to find a room directory in the room or a room service menu I asked at the front desk for one. I was told the menu was in a draw. I assured them I had looked in every draw without success. Then the other front desk person interjected and told me it's in a draw, implying I was being ignorant. I reminded them I had checked every draw before coming downstairs. One was delivered to the room later but the implied notion that I didn't look properly was frankly condescending. When we did go to order room service we rang twice without getting an answer. We then rang reception who took our order. It's not a big deal but an annoyance that diminishes from the overall stay. When we did order room service the following day the phone went unanswered after two calls so I rang the front desk who took the order. When the food arrived there was only one set of cutlery despite having booked the room for two and ordering two main meals and an additional salad. The second set of cutlery was delivered to the room but it was just another shortfall in service. We normally stay at the Sofitel Wentworth when we stay in the city. We thought we would try something different. Never again. When there isn't a cruise ship in dock the view is great over the harbour but the view doesn't compensate for tired rooms and bad service.
