Over Tamanu Beach Resort

   07-02-2017
Tamanu Beach has a sign outside describing itself as “Casual Luxury”, but the fact that the “u” is missing, probably sets the scene. We had booked a Studio Garden Room, but were informed before we arrived that the resort is being refurbished and we had been upgraded to a Family Room. Our room was spacious and clean, but also getting a little tired and in need of updating too. Our family room was a junior suite, with small bedroom, en-suite bathroom and dayroom, with fridge, kettle and daybed. It opened out onto a nice deck although the furniture was not particularly comfortable. Having said that our bed was comfortable and we would have slept well, if it were not for the early calls of the many cockerels on the island – but this is the Cook Islands and being close to nature is what you come for. The Tamanu is a family business run by Nick Henry, grandson of the Cook Islands first Prime Minister and he probably puts on the best fire and dance cultural show across the Islands with a large buffet spread with many local dishes. I would highly recommend it. Outside of that, the food in the restaurant is adequate, but not great and the continental breakfast would be disappointing if you spent many days there. We did treat ourselves to dinner at the Pacific Resort (about 15 minutes’ walk) one night, which is in a most delightful setting and probably the best food we had anywhere in the Cook Islands. Aitutaki, is almost totally reliant on tourism for its survival, but is poorly setup for the independent traveler. Few places seem open for lunch and there is no taxi service on the island during January. Tour operators do offer transfers and the Tamanu Beach offers bicycles to get around. You simply cannot leave Aitutaki without doing a lagoon tour, which truly establishes this island as being close to paradise. We took a reef tour with TE King, not cheap at $125 each, but you are collected from the hotel, you are in small boats and get to visit a number of fabulous islands and snorkeling sites and get a superb lunch. Highly recommended.

"Take me Back!"

   07-02-2017
No holiday in The Cook Islands would be complete without a trip, or hopefully if you can, a stay in Aitutaki. So 23 years after our first trip to Aitutaki, we were back. We were so pleased we booked Tamanu Beach for our 5 night stay. The warm welcome our family of four received when we arrived at the airport was so wonderful. On arrival at Tamanu Beach we were also warmly welcomed by Tamara with a cool drink and shown to our bungalow, which was very spacious to say the least. With plenty of room for the four of us and with a lovely view of the lagoon, we all felt so relaxed and at home. It was very quiet and peaceful. The beach and pristine water right at the front of the resort is nothing short of wow!! We snorkelled and swam every day, there is so much fish life and coral and also a giant clam not far off shore. It was quite hot most of the time during our stay, so it was very nice to have the air conditioned bungalow to come back to. The grounds and beach are kept beautifully clean and the gardens are lovely and very natural, the sweet scent of the air is amazing. We loved the chickens, roosters and the couple of cats who roam freely. The restaurant and bar is great as well and very handy to have on site. The housekeeping ladies are so lovely and helpful too (thank you for doing our laundry so beautifully!). This place is calling me back and I hope one day we will return. Thank you Tamanu Beach for helping to make our time in Aitutaki so memorable.

"Most highly recommended"

My wife and I spent 2 weeks over Christmas 2016. Room was clean and fresh, comfortable bed, and looked exactly like the promotion pictures, and our deck looked over the azure lagoon. The hotel staff were unfailingly friendly & assisted wherever requested. The restaurant is regarded as one of the best on the island and we returned more often than not over our stay. Fresh food, other than fish, is a challenge on the island, but the food was of a high standard (particularly recommend the island curry), and the restaurant staff are wonderful. We created some old & new cocktails, they even do good coffee, and like all the Cook Islanders we met, always smiling. Tamanu is managed by Nick who is an involved and generous host who knows just about everyone on the island & where to get anything. Our whole experience felt more like we were staying at a friend's (very stylish large & well located) home. Comparing is hard on one trip, so whilst there may be other places to stay on Aitutaki that are as good as Tamanu, absolutely none are better. Thanks Nick, Kat & your team.

"🌴 the best 'island' night entertainment will be experienced at the "tamanu" resort ... 🌴"

   10-01-2017
this performance ... which encompasses the best hula dancing ... magical and harmonic voices ... and drumming ... you will not experience an 'island' night of greater caliber ... anywhere in the south pacific ... a true reflection of one of the many cultural traditions which makes the cook islands a must for those who love the tropics and polynesia ... don't waste your tourist dollar on bali ... phuket ... penang ...

"Best Choice!"

   25-12-2016
We stayed at Tamanu Beach Resort for three nights in October 2015 and could not have made a better choice of resorts! Our accommodations were spacious and clean; the bed was very comfortable. The onsite restaurant serves fabulous meals, with dinner being amazing. The owners of the property are onsite and very concerned that guests are happy. The beach is beautiful and long, perfect for a long walk. I would highly recommend staying here, and am looking forward to one day returning myself.
