Over Wananavu Beach Resort

"beautiful location and diving spots"

Wanananu Resort is situated closed to Rakiraki, very pleasant city to see, especially the market. The road to access the resort is a bit bumpy, we might want to rent a SUV if you drive there on your own. We had a beautiful private villa on the hill, with an awesome view on the ocean. The diving spots are the nicest in Fiji, and the staff is very professional and friendly. The restaurant deserves refurbishment and food could be nicer but nothing terrible to mention. Spa is nicely located, massage was really really pleasant but Manicure was a terrible experience. Make sure the staff knows what you need to do... Wifi not free but extremely fast (compare to anywhere else in Fiji)!

"Laid back spot with great staff!"

My wife and I can't say too much about our stay at Wananavu Resort. Our main purpose was R&R, including as much diving and dancing as we could do. (They have a great band.) When we arrived on Saturday afternoon, my wife had an earache from the plane flight. The Front Office arranged for a doctors appointment and a transfer there. By Monday we were off diving 2 dives a day. The resort staff are awesome, the food was great, the grounds were well kept and we had lots of fun! Our room was clean and had a great view of the ocean and the entire resort. The Dive shop folks are friendly, knowledgeable and experienced. I've over 2000 dives and had a fantastic time shooting photos. The shop manager helped give me advice so I could get some great photos. My wife (120 dives) had an incredible time learning about Fijian culture from everyone. We were going on for 8 days diving on the Fiji Siren and were a bit chilly on some dives, so one of the staff and the manager separately loaned each of us full length wetsuits for the next week. The resort staff arranged all our transfers (and a stop off at the Sleeping Giant on our return). They also arranged for a tour of a small village and the local area for us. We haven't had this incredible a visit in any resort for years. (btw: Wananavu gives a great value with package deals.) We both would highly recommend this resort to anyone wanting to get some R&R in a wonderful spot with some really friendly people.

I loved my visit to Wananavu-they had a great menu selection from what I saw and had the restaurant staff were quite nice. The wedding coordinator and front receptionist were lovely too but you do have to follow up on a few things to see that they are done or charged or not charged-it didn't annoy me though and staff are onto things once mistakes are pointed out. Rooms are a little dated but there was a nice rustic romantic feel about them and I especially loved the beach bures. For the reasonable prices and amazing locations that get some of Viti Levus best sunrises and sunsets I can overlook a few minuscule things and do suggest to follow up on stuff and maybe just call the resort directly for bookings or follow up on your "booking.com reservation" because a few people that were staying there at the time had,had trouble and Im unsure who was at fault but it doesn't hurt to just email or phone to see if they did get your booking. I loved their wedding venues and jetty area and wish I had stayed longer to take advantage of their other amenities.

"Quiet, Remote and Simply Charming Resort"

The really great thing about this resort, in my opinion, is its remote location: a 2.5 hour drive from Nadi, with the last few miles down a bumpy dirty road. The resort was anything but a cookie-cutter property. Rooms are in duplex bures (stand-alone bungalows), scattered around the hillside, with views of the ocean. The bures are simple and rustic but have all the basic amenities, including air conditioning (if you need it: the sea breezes were more than adequate during our trip). Hammocks dotting the beach area called to us every afternoon. Staff were warm and welcoming. Food was variable, but always OK. Dive Shop was superb, and diving was excellent.

"Pretty Place, Good Service, Very Spotty Food, Diving Meh"

Our scuba diving travel agent recommended this place, along with Sau Bay resort off Taveuni (see my review of Sau Bay) for a scuba diving trip to Fiji. First, let me say this is written from the perspective of someone coming from the east coast of the US, so the review might have been somewhat different if we had come from someplace much closer such as the west coast of the U.S. or Australia. As others have said, the resort is a 2 1/2 to 3/4 hour drive from the airport over (mostly) a two lane, not particularly pretty road. The resort itself is very pretty with lovely landscaping, a pretty, if small, sand beach, a pretty, if small, pool and a very pleasant outdoor eating area. The staff is lovely, and service is good. We stayed in an oceanfront burre which was spacious and pleasant, although clearly showing some wear and tear, including a very large bathroom with a beautiful large shower with a huge window looking out at very pretty plantings, almost as if you were in an outdoor shower. The food was very spotty. Some of the meals were quite good, others ok, and some pretty awful. Meat was generally tough, though my husband did have one good steak dinner, and I had a couple of nice fish dinners. As a small matter, they didn't offer artificial sweetener. We asked for it and it was finally provided, and by the end of the week, we noticed it had been placed in all the sugar bowls. Again, a small matter, but this was the first place we'd been anywhere in the world that didn't automatically provide it. Coming from the U.S. this hotel was a very reasonable option, given the exchange rate with the dollar. Re the diving, which was our main reason for being there: the dive operation was very professional and well run. The dive staff was very nice - bula Mary! The boat trips to the "better" dive sights, in the Bligh waters, took an hour to get to. Both my husband's and my reaction to most of the dives were disappointment. Except for a couple of particularly pretty dives, out of the 10 we did there, were felt they were not as nice as many of the dives we'd done in the Caribbean. (we were told at our next resort that Cyclone Winston had done quite a bit of damage to that area, so perhaps that was the main reason for how we found the dives.) Also, we were taken to the same dive sites on several occasions during our 5 days of diving. If that was the only area of Fiji we dove, it would definitely not have been worth the time and expense of the trip from the east coast. Thankfully, the diving was MUCH better at rainbow reef off Taveuni, where we spent our 2nd week, which more than made up for the first week at Wananavu. (See my review of Sau Bay Beach Resort). All in all, I would have liked to give Wananvu 3 1/2 stars, but that's not an option. We would not return to Wananvu in the future.
