"Great for big groups"

We stayed here as part of a large group. Meals and service were smooth and a great acceptance of food allergies, with plenty of options. The only food/beverage complaint I had was the coffee, I love a great coffee in the morning, the urn coffee was not tasty or even hot, the 'barrister' coffee at the bar was horrible. Such a shame. The room we had was nice, very clean and the bed was very comfortable. The service was suitably average, they managed with all the normal stuff, but when asked for anything a bit extra they fell apart and were unhelpful. We had a formal black tie event and I asked for a mirror to be delivered to the room, there was no attempt to try, I was just told they "couldn't do that" rudely. Great location, so close to Waitangi and it's lovely little cafe too. Short walk to Paihia, but they also had a courtesy running back and forth to Paihia, so this was never a problem. They also had their own wharf, so we could catch a ferry directly from the hotel. I can't comment on wifi, normally I do utilise it, but this trip was too busy to even remember to get a code. I would stay here again.

For location this is 5 stars however we found the bathroom/ kitchen in need of renovation. For 2 nights we just dined out, so it wasn't really a bother not having a microwave/stovetop or anything. The bathroom was weirdly set out, toilet opposite an old shub (shower tub) and then the next room had the bathroom basin opposite the fridge and tea/coffee necessities. You could tell it was very outdated. Found it odd to get water from the bathroom sink. However this is all bearable for the sheer view. Found the tv was great to wind down on at night, quality and good channel selection. Bed, comfy and the bedroom had a nice beachy feel. We had the ocean view room and oh my gosh it was beautiful, literally right outside the beach. You could see the entire harbour. Found check in staff and check out staff very friendly and helpful, but the whole protocol they go through is lengthy. The breakfast bar was the only in hotel dining experience we had and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was no means fancy, but a buffet with yummy usually brekky foods which seemed to make similar appearances each day. Great selection of fruits, hot foods, cereals and cold foods along with drinks and the standard instant coffee. Easy breakfast. Pools were wicked. Downfall would be the wifi rules, unlike many hotels wifi here comes at a hefty cost unless you sit in the lobby for the permitted 30 minutes a day of free wifi. Housekeeping was good, and again friendly staff.

"Expected much more"

My wife and I had great expectations of our stay at Copthorne Waitangi and were really looking forward to it. We purchased a gift voucher earlier in the year for one night's stay. The room was a standard room and was situated in the Kowhai Wing. We were immediately alarmed to see our room was located nearest to the roadside. Our bed whilst it was super warm and large, was two single beds placed together. Needless to say, during the night we kept trying to avoid sleeping in the 'trench' in the middle of the two. Overall, the room was quite outdated and had a definate musty smell. No airfcon but just a roof fan. The bathroom sink was cracked. The noise from the bathroom extractor fan was very loud. There was no net curtains for privacy on the windows. Road noise was annoying and we could hear our neighbours quite clearly. We had a full breakfast, the cooked food was luke warm at best. Overall the staff were very friendly. We have stayed in many hotels, motels around NZ, Australia and Far East Asia. Needless to say, we were bitterly disappointed on the quality of our stay here. Sadly, we won't be coming back to the Copthorne Waitangi and should have stayed in Paihia/Russell.

"An enjoyable stay in beautiful surrounds !"

We stayed at The Copthorne in Paihia for two nights at the beginning of our holiday to the North Island of NZ. It was an absolutely lovely accommodation with a lovely pool and outdoor area. It had a bar and an in house restaurant. It offered a free shuttle service during day hours. It was very clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend a stay here on your visit to The Bay Of Islands, NZ.

"Location let down by poor maintenance and atrocious wifi policy"

The location is stunning being by the water and the historic treaty house and grounds. BUT! The company clearly focus on making money from large conferences and the like, and have totally forgotten the basic needs of the average traveller these days for not only food but a good room, laundry and free wifi connection. The hotel is also some way from town. Our room was tired, with a stained bath, ill fitting drawers, broken blind pulls etc. Otherwise basically ok. The laundry was so expensive you would have to be desperate, so we waited till the next place. What had steam coming out of my ears though was not only the cost of the timed period of access to wifi (apart from one free half hour a day if you sat in the lobby) but the fact this was linked to a pathetic quantity of mbs. Use all the mbs and it finished early. On top of that, the speed of the connection meant I could not down load only two days of photos despite two alleged 24 hour connections. So my recommendation would be don't use this place until the management wake up to what other hotels are providing and visitors now expect, for free. I stress the management responsibility because all the staff I met tried their best. I was frankly embarrassed for the reception staff having to cope with the complaints. The dining room can get overwhelmed by the conference buffets etc, but when this happened to us a waiter called Richard kept us happily entertained. We approved of the green clean policy of not changing stuff unnecessarily, but fear in this case it was probably merely cost cutting, as the cleaning staff had a lot to do.
