"First Poor Experience with Double Tree"
I have always enjoyed Double Tree accommodations but this one fell far below my expectations and past experience. There was no internet capability. The router was simply overwhelmed the entire stay. In addition the workout facilities were closed. They contracted with another provider but it closed at 4 PM which is useless since that coincides with the check in time. Staff was pleasant.
"Pretty gardens and facilities"
It's a really pretty hotel on the end of Hagley Park and easy access to the city. I booked the room a couple of months ago and received notification via the HHonours app (note this is only a confirmation I hadn't realised that the room hadn't been pre-paid which was a bit of a shock on check out😳). I also checked in online which seemed to work as we were due to arrive late. After a long drive from Dunedin I wanted to be able to go straight to our room. Our receptionist briskly advised that we were currently in a twin single room. Noting that I had booked three (2 adults and 1 child) I was also briskly told that their rooms contained either twin singles or a king double and they would have to put a trundle bed into a king double room. Anyways, it really wasn't a biggy for us (but bummed I couldn't upgrade to the Park Suite but there you go) - and they did up grade us to a room with a balcony (which is a thing apparently) but the staff's attitude was really brisk. Professional and not very friendly. They seemed to be mostly foreign workers who had little knowledge of the needs of their guests but were proficient at the tasks they were required to do. The staff in the restaurant were better being on the most part locals. Fine for breakfast and lunch in the gardens but I'd say it would be pretty soulless for dinner. Overall it was a comfortable and convenient hotel close to the city and in beautiful grounds. But it certainly lacked the warmth and friendly staff that we've come to expect from DoubleTree. Once Christchurch finishes it's rebuild I'm sure there will be other hotels offering better service but not as lovely gardens.
"A very charming hotel"
Stayed overnight after a flight from Sydney. We arrived close to 1am but the reception service was flawless. Tip: if you time your arrival well you may get extra cookies... It was far from the least expensive option but our room was quiet, very clean and modern and the 24x7 room service came in very handy as I was traveling with my young daughter. In the end I consider that we got good value for money. Something to note is the interesting layout of the hotel that is surrounded by immaculately manicured gardens. In particular, the superb rose garden by the excellent and perfectly warm pool was an oasis the morning after our flight. I would stay again.
"OMG a disaster!"
What a disaster this hotel was! They offer a booking service to choose the rooms beforehand! So we used this service booked our rooms! Only to find when we arrived at 3pm (check-in was 2pm) we could not access our rooms because Emirates had booked these rooms for their staff, were checking out at 4pm and then they had to be cleaned!!! Earliest check-in was 5pm!REALLY!! It took 1/2 hour to book phoning from Australia, when they knew they could not accommodate us, this probably happens everyday of the week. A la carte breakfast an absolute disaster as well!
"Higher Hopes Had"
It was really hard to tell from the ratings and the pictures of this hotel, what to expect. However, from the beautifully groomed garden, which was just as pictured, I was hoping the rest of the place was just as nice. It seems the hotel is still a work in progress and was recently taken over by Hilton. The rooms are beautiful and modern and have been updated, with exception of the television sets. AS a result, our TV was an older flat screen with poor resolution and lines running through it. Not a deal breaker since we weren't planning to spend too much time in the room, but not wonderful either. Oh, they also have popcorn ceilings, which was a big point of contention for my partner, although not a big deal for me. If you plan to use wi-fi, we were unable to get any wi-fi access in our room, so that was a huge bummer/irritant. Check first before you settle in and maybe they can swap rooms for you. As with other Hilton's I have stayed at, the beds are consistent and super comfy. Count on warm cookies on arrival, since it is a Doubletree. The bar is old and in the pictures, it almost looked like quirky and cool vintage, but it was just vintage. By vintage, I just mean old. Same for the dining room. IT was the same tired decor as you saw in the 80s. The only saving grace for the restaurant was that it overlooked the beautiful center garden, just outside the pool. There are some tables outside so when the weather is nice, this is a great place to crack open a bottle of wine and literally smell the roses. The restaurant honestly reminded us of a retirement community restaurant that closed early. I also have food allergies and with exception to the gluten free bread at breakfast and dedicated GF toaster (BRAVO), they weren't overly allergy friendly. Service at the hotel was always good and we have no complaints there. In fact, room service was some of the quickest we have ever had (inside 15 minuntes) and the food was good. According to my husband, it was one of the best chicken cesar salads he has ever had. Everyone at the hotel was very nice and I just with the place was more updated. As of our stay, they are STILL renovating the fitness center, which was a bummer. The location of this hotel is good. It is a beautiful walk across the park to city center and less than a mile walk to Riccarton and tons of great Asian restaurants. There is also a fantastic little natural grocer called Wholefoods, just a half mile walk from the hotel. Would we stay here again? Hard to say, but probably not. We would probably look for something a bit better appointed near the museum and good restaurants. While this was a central location, this was a sleepy area, and a neighborhood with a bit more action would be good. There is also no spa, which is also a bummer. If you are looking for a quiet and quality place to lay your head, this does the trick.
