Tijdens deze laatste excursie bezoekt u een mosselkwekerij en proeft u de zalige, grote mosselen! "Friendly staff but that's about it. "
My family and I stayed here (4 adults, 17yr/o and 2yr/o). The hotel is extremely over priced. We paid $330p/n for a hillside room. When making the original booking, we triple checked the configuration of the room as there was an extra sunroom with bed in the photos. They confirmed that this is correct and we would be getting this room. When we got to the there, sure enough there was no sunroom with bed. We were told they were different rooms so we had to get a rollaway bed. The room was outdated and very small. There wasn't a big enough area for the family to hang so we had to split up and be in separate rooms all day. There wasn't a toaster or any kind of facilities for you to make your own food, so because you're out in the middle of nowhere you're forced to eat at their restaurant everyday for a $40 meal (and that's just dinner). There was no tv or swimming pool due to the earthquake. We called to see if they had a DVD player or something to keep us occupied as the weather wasn't nice enough to go outside. They said no. So we decided to check out a day early. When we told the reception staff, they then quickly found a PlayStation for entertainment (which was helpful). Overall experienced sucked and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. We ended up checking into a different hotel in Picton for $160pn and it was fantastic.
"Great night stop on Queen Charlotte walkway"
We arrived after or second day walking the Queen Charlotte track. The weather had been wet for most of our walk so we were a little tired and worn down at arrival. After check in and a hot shower we retired to the bar for a drink prior to dinner. As it was cold for November the fire was burning in the bar. This created a relaxed atmosphere and allowed the walkers to talk about there days activities in the warmth and comfort of the lounge seating of the bar area, so everyone soon forgot the tough days walk. The staff were friendly, the restaurant food was of good quality but a little over priced. The accommodation was very acceptable for the track walkers but is probably not to the standard of those wishing to have a couples quality weekend away.
The resort is a wonderful reward after a long trek on the queen charlotte trail. The rooms were very nice and and well supplied. A small patio off the room provided a great view. Regrettably we arrived later on a rainy day and so didn't have an opportunity to really enjoy the amenities. The restaurant food was delicious and service very good. My only recommendation is it would be nice to have the restaurant open a bit later than 730pm and free wifi would be useful.
"Nice Views. Poor Hotel."
This resort hotel is in a great location. Short distance from Torea Bay dock and great views of the bay. The rooms are clean and modern, with comfortable beds. We stayed in the Kowhai Rooms which had nice decks and views of the bay. The restaurant was below average for a hotel restaurant. The food was outrageously expensive and poor quality. There were no mussels despite being in a mussel farm area. The garlic bread were bake at home Countdown loaves that were frozen, and still cold in the middle after they had been defrosted. The butter chicken was tasteless, the sauce looked like a store bought bottled sauce and the "indian bread" was definitely a store bought pita bread. For $35. This accomodation has both water taxi and road access to the town so there is no excuse for not having fresh produce. After dinner, most people liked to sit in the lounge for a drink and to watch TV. They closed up really early (8pm) and kindly asked people to leave. The breakfast only had 2 options - continental and cooked and was way too expensive for what you got. They started clearing the buffet really early and you felt rushed to get out rather than spending time eating. On the second morning there was water damage into the kitchen so they only offered a continental breakfast. There was no thought of any compensation or discount as an act of good will to the disappointed guests. There was no good will what-so-ever. The pool was half empty, dirty, and in a state of disrepair. The impression you got was a family run hotel trying to do it on the cheap, rather than a comfortable resort trying to make you feel welcome. The problem is, there's no other option in that area and it's a natural stop for the Queen Charlotte Track. My advice would be get a water taxi out and stay somewhere else.
Great location, but a captive audience. Restaurant prices start at 6. $35 for butter chicken seems excessive. No breakfast before 8 am. Some people like to start on the qct earlier. $10 for 2 litres of milk seems excessive and $35 for a $12-14 bottle of wine. But as I said, a captive audience. One night is enough. I would not suggest having a rest day here.
