Over The Portage Resort

Great accommodation, nice and warm after a swim! Great views even when cloudy and rainy. Beautiful walks and a lovely restaurant to go to after. I would recommend the butter chicken curry. Nice central games room to interact with others.
"Great location, little else"
Arrived after a fairly long drive from the nearest town. Beautiful drive, well worth it, but you wouldn't want to have to,drive any further, road very narrow and winding. Hotel (definitely not a resort) had great views from our room (kowhai wing). Guy at main desk very uninterested. Room very tired and dated. No air con which made it very difficult to sleep. Headboard dirt. But view was amazing! Restaurant food was very expensive and very average. Limited selection. I suggest bringing snacks with you and just order an entree. Mains are about $40. On check out, the same guy that checked us in didn't even ask how we found it or thank us for staying. We paid and he said bye. Overall, I don't think this place is worth the price. It mhe be ok for an overnight stop for those doing the walk, however, I'd rate it a 2 star. The only saving grace is the location.
"We sat there wondering what the poor people were doing that day."
We were staying at the Portage Lighthouse rental house on the ridge across the bay from the Portage Hotel, so of course we had to try the hotel for lunch. We sat in the sun on the wide veranda, drinking their excellent pale ale, eaingt their yummy seafood chiwder and listening to the Marlborough Track walker exchange stories of beauty, of steepness and of blisters. We had to go back again and then we had to sadly return to the less stunning world.
"Friendly staff, but..."
We stayed at the Portage Resort Hotel for two nights while walking the Queen Charlotte Track. First impressions were great after a very long and challenging walk from Punga Cove - relaxing and very comfortable looking lounge and bar. The reception staff were friendly, but they seemed a little disconnected from the fact we’d just been out on the track for over 7 hours. The location and situation of the Resort is fabulous. The bar and restaurant overlook the bay. The beer was ice cold and the restaurant food was very good, but a little expensive (fair enough given the remote location). Our rooms were ok, but only ok. The bed was big and very comfortable, but the bathroom was pretty ordinary. The shower was old and tiny, there was rot in the wood at its base and the pressure wasn’t great. The basin had no plug - a major miss, given the requests to save water and the hair dryer attached to the wall kept falling to the floor. The lighting in the room was poor. In fact, the tea/coffee nook was completely unlit and therefore hard to use. There was a damp musty smell in the room too. Overall we really enjoyed our stay because of the need for rest, gorgeous location and friendly staff. The quality of the rooms, though, presents a major opportunity for improvement to the resort. And given many guests will be walking the Queen Charlotte Track, there is so much more that could be done or offered to guests to make the stay more comfortable.
Room 1 Kowhai Wing Faulty bedside lamp that was sparking so ripped other of desk and swapped. No central bedroom light not working. Food Dinner Butter chicken $38 not worth money found chicken bone in it. Meat average accompanying vegetable very basic. Over rated for price. Staff pleasant but ill groomed ie dirty runners...tired t shirts..no Gin in bar and bar attendant did not know what bar snacks were...given chips use by date expired in December...soft chips..overall could have potential but need to up their game.
