My wife and I with another couple stayed here for a night while walking the queen charlotte trail. Great place, friendly staff, good food and bar. View of the bay from our room. Great room (21) big bed, good bathroom, wifi available. Restaurant provided good choices for dinner and breakfast. Food was well done. Also, very important, they provided a shuttle for the return to the trail. As you arrive in Portage you have to head down a steepish hill to the town for 700 metres, which while not a huge distance it would mean a steep 700 metres extra in the morning to get back to the trail, where of course you then spend the next 2km going uphill as well. So big plus we thought. Highly recommended place to spend a night or two.
We spent two nights there. We were looking forward to a luxury rest day on our Queen Charlotte Track (QCT) trip. We were disappointed that the hot tub was out of action and the cafe was closed. Although the room was comfortable and well appointed, it was a little outdated, much like most of the accommodation on the QCT. It was over priced given most of the additional facilities were out of action. It was also the only place on the QCT, that we stayed where you had to pay for wifi. The restaurant, whilst expensive, had excellent food, wine and beer and the staff very friendly and helpful. Mike was an absolute gem. Not sure where the Portage would be without him. We did appreciate the willingness and flexibility of the staff to shuttle us up the hill to the start of the track.
"Great location, nice room and friendly service"
Two nights at this hotel, which location is great and nice. Driving thru Marlborough Sounds is exciting (narrow road, curves) but so nice views. We had very quick check-in and we were guided to our sea view room, nice and modern, clean, great view to the bay, comfortable beds, tv, ok bathroom and nice and spacious balcony. The only think we needed was insect screens because temperature can be high in the room without A/C. Two days without wifi was ok. There was an opportunity to buy a connection but we don´t needed it. We had two dinners and one lunch at the restaurant and coffees and muffins at the bar. Nice and friendly service, tasty food and a selection of local wines from vineyard near by. It was nice to sit in the terrace when sun sets. Beach was rocky, not easy to go swimming without swimming shoes. There was only few deck chairs available. Swimming pool is rather small and not very attractive. Overall we were very satisfied and enjoyed our stay.
I stayed at this hotel about 7 years ago and it was great, so this trip I just booked it without reading any reviews. Now I have read reviews I wish I had looked at other hotels in the area aswell. The hotel is out of date, run down and rather empty. No pool, no tv reception, trees blocking the view from the rooms and the restaurant (only 1 option now) smelt like wet carpet and many dead flys and just not clean. This hotel in a great spot and has great potential, but until the owners improve the service that provide which is not cheap and seems very over priced I would not stay again.
"Great location, but that's about it."
I had my mother visiting from the USA and wanted to treat her to something really special on our trip around the northern South Island. After much googling, I found the Portage Hotel and Resort to fit the bill. Or so it seemed. There is nothing about this location that indicates it is or ever was a resort. A small swimming pool does not a resort make. The place needs a gardener and some updated furnishings. Checking in, we were told that the internet was on a paid basis, and we soon found out it was dodgy at best. The television did not work, and we were told "someone had cut the wire accidentally". We were not offered any alternative. I also read some reviews online later on and it appears that same story has been told many times in the past few months, The one restaurant had a limited menu, and I actually could not eat my pasta as it was a peculiar shade of green having been inundated with pesto, which was not indicated on the menu. I cannot eat basil. The other two meals in my party were edible, with the meats being well prepared, , but the vegetables were barely cooked and my husband's potatoes appeared/tasted to have been reheated from another service, I do not have many truly negative reviews on my page, but I must be honest and very clear about this hotel. A place such as this , with it's enviable location and views should really be stepping it up for tourists as they are the new boom economy in NZ. It is overpriced and does not provide the service you would expect of a place that once had the reputation of being one of the best hotels in the area. They are still charging as if they are. I would recommend that you avoid this hotel.
