"Good for 1 night while walking the Queen Charlotte track"
My friend and I recently walked the Queen Charlotte track and the Portage Resort Hotel was our third nights accommodation. After reading the reviews we were unsure of what to expect. After a long days walk in temperatures of over 30 we arrived tired, not too impressed to find our bags had not been taken to our room as the guy on reception said they were. The room itself was lovely and spacious with a good bathroom, and I think recently renovated. But we walked into a very hot and stuffy room, there were no windows open to let in any air. Enjoyed a swim in the pool to cool down, no pool towels. We did not eat so can not comment on the food, we did enjoy a glass of wine each on the deck overlooking the sounds, beautiful setting. Wine price was same as what you expect anywhere. Overall our stay was somewhat better than we had expected, but I think they still have some way to go in making the resort more enjoyable.
I agree with many of the other reviewers that The Portage is in need of some attention. The location can't be faulted but the resort is falling into a state of disrepair - from small things like cobwebs on the verandah, to larger things like the closed and scruffy coffee shop. This place could be first class if only it was given some attention. On the positive side, the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was OK , but rather overpriced.
After a day walking, this is an ideal space to have a lie down and a cup of tea,for persons of a certain age .I just went to the bar.The food is excellant as is the service .OK its Auckland prices + probably ( I dont eat in 5 star restaurants there). But we are a captive audience and why worry about cost ,how many time's will we pass this way.?
"Wonderful spot on the Queen Charlotte Track"
Very nice rooms for being in a rather inaccessible location and the dinner was absolutely outstanding -- fresh local fish beautifully prepared with fresh veggies. Deserts were 5-star too. Quiet sanctuary during a ride on the Track but a daunting uphill back up to the Track in the morning. Walkers can get a shuttle but we made the trek on cycles. Still delightful.
"Million dollar view..."
We stayed 2 nights in a kowhai lodge room ( $275 per night). This place is peaceful and quiet. Yes the rooms and presentation of the resort could do with a tidy up but that's a small part as the beautiful view is distracting. We had two very hot days and was a bit disappointed with the lack of shade provided to be able to sit outside and enjoy it. The dinner menu is a bit minimal and over priced but not a deal breaker. There are other places near by to find a meal if you have the transport to explore. This place would benefit from a little store like other resorts in the area for simple things such as sunscreen. The rooms could do with air con as its very hot in the evenings but leaving doors open invite mosquitos in. The staff are friendly and accommodating. We wouldn't return next time but would recommend simply because of the view.
