"Two nights at Portage in autumn"
As with some of the reviews, the hotel looks tired in some areas. Our room had recently been refurbished but was still an average room and quite pricey. It was however, very clean with an excellent outlook acrooss a well kept lawn and garden area to Keneperu Sound. What raised our rating was the really excellent food and the excellent staff.
Stayed one night whilst walking Queen Charlotte Track. Room was lovely with a great view and comfy bed. Nice balcony to sit out on and take in the view. Dined in the restaurant and food was ok, staff were really struggling due to numbers of guests and the service suffered. They needed more staff. The hotel furnishings are beginning to look tired and so are the grounds. I got the impression that too few staff were being asked to do too much. The staff that were there were polite even under pressure.
"Been there before - very dissapointed this time"
We had 4 nights at this resort in 1995 It was a great experience , although they catered for the top end luxury visitor they also catered for the man in the street with restaurants but also providing top class accommodation facilities and service for all to enjoy. This time things went wrong when we checked in. The person on the desk was impersonal and pushy we got directions on where our room was with no one volunteering to show us to our room As we looked out over our balcony we could see the grounds were in desperate need of a real tidy up. Sitting back observing the way the place was run you couldn't help thinking the place was being managed until someone was prepared to come in with a considerable sum of money and get it back up to standard or let it deteriorate so it would only cater for the large number of trampers who spent a night there while on the walking track that passes near by Don't think we will be back which is a pity as it a nice place to visit
My wife and I with another couple stayed here for a night while walking the queen charlotte trail. Great place, friendly staff, good food and bar. View of the bay from our room. Great room (21) big bed, good bathroom, wifi available. Restaurant provided good choices for dinner and breakfast. Food was well done. Also, very important, they provided a shuttle for the return to the trail. As you arrive in Portage you have to head down a steepish hill to the town for 700 metres, which while not a huge distance it would mean a steep 700 metres extra in the morning to get back to the trail, where of course you then spend the next 2km going uphill as well. So big plus we thought. Highly recommended place to spend a night or two.
We spent two nights there. We were looking forward to a luxury rest day on our Queen Charlotte Track (QCT) trip. We were disappointed that the hot tub was out of action and the cafe was closed. Although the room was comfortable and well appointed, it was a little outdated, much like most of the accommodation on the QCT. It was over priced given most of the additional facilities were out of action. It was also the only place on the QCT, that we stayed where you had to pay for wifi. The restaurant, whilst expensive, had excellent food, wine and beer and the staff very friendly and helpful. Mike was an absolute gem. Not sure where the Portage would be without him. We did appreciate the willingness and flexibility of the staff to shuttle us up the hill to the start of the track.
