Tijdens deze laatste excursie bezoekt u een mosselkwekerij en proeft u de zalige, grote mosselen! We had stayed here 7 years ago as part of the Queen Charlotte Track and it was brilliant, amazing views and the resort was immaculate and vibrant with very professional staff. We were so keen to return when we had the chance but we were so disappointed to find it tired and in need of tlc particularly with the gardens which are full of weeds. We stayed in the Kowhai suites which were spacious and comfortable, lovely deck and comfortable bed. The bathroom had a noisy fan, leaking toilet and hideous lighting. The shower didn't drain well. The painting in the bathroom left a lot to be desired, very shabby work. The cafe which was amazing the first time is now closed and and the courtyard full of weeds. The shop is also closed. We had lunch which was ok and dinner too was ok but expensive for what it was. On a positive note all the staff were very welcoming and exceedingly helpful. Very sad to see the Portage in this sad state.
"Disappointing return visit."
Our fond memories of a lovely stay we had 7 years ago has been shattered. I suspect poor management. The food we had in the restaurant was good, however it wasn't value for money. Very limited unchanging menu, only one single pasta option for vegetarians. We had a hot and sunny day, and there was no shade, no parasol umbrellas, even though there were stands. There were umbrellas near pool, but staff said that they were not allowed to move them. The doors to the veranda area were fixed shut, only a single was opening. Looked and felt like a very expensive stopover motel for hikers. No fans or air con in rooms. Staff were just doing their jobs, we found them to be unfriendly and perhaps untrained, unlike our experience of New Zealand. A complete opposite when we stayed here before. Must be the change of ownership. First place we have stayed at which asked to pay for wifi. Very disappointing, we will not visit again, and will not recommend to others.
"Great location with poor management"
I would strongly recommend to avoid this place. With great expectations, you get disappointed very fast. The owner has chosen a management team that shouldn't run a lodge at such a great location. Unqualified staff in general.
"Relaxing and peaceful"
Stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Room with a private deck and fantastic views. Dined both nights small menu but good quality. Ignore the reviewers that say it's over priced. Its not cheap either but very enjoyable and such a lovely setting.
Having read some reviews, I prepared for the worst. But I actually had a very nice stay! The room I was in (39), was modern, new, spacious and comfortable. Food was a bit expensive, true, but I figure the costs of running such a remote hotel are too. I didn't felt being taking advantage of at all. There were some vegetarian options on the menu and they prepared me a nice vegetarian lunchbox as well. They also arranged a watertaxi and offered me a ride to the jetty. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Only a few issues on the negative side. On the day I arrived, there were at least three helicopter flights arriving and departing only ten meters from the terrace/restaurant, even at dinnertime. This gave dinner kind of a - being on the tarmac of an airport - atmosphere. They apparantly allow smoking on the terrace, making it an unpleasant place for people who don't - which should be the norm. Breakfast is very poor. No fresh bread, cheeses, fresh fruit. You had to pay for wifi 15$ a day, but it was very speedy and reliable. Better this than the free useless wifi offered in many other hotels.
