". A good place for a break"
Spent 4 nights at this accommodation. It is passed its hay day but very pleasant just the same. We had the staff go out of their way to help us on many occasions. The food was somewhere between good and excellent.
"Tired, poorly maintained and not clean"
We stayed at Portage as part of a four day walk along the Queen Charlotte track. The property has definitely seen better days and is not well maintained. Our room (38) had mould on one of the walls and the room smelt mouldy and dank. If we weren't so tired after our 24km walk, we would have asked to change rooms but we just couldn't be bothered moving ourselves and all our luggage. The fixtures and fittings of the room were tired, chipped and needed updating. As others have said, the cafe was closed and had a general air of being abandoned and overgrown. Plus no free Wifi (even if limited in speed and/or download) is pretty poor in this day and age. On the upside, we thought that the restaurant, although expensive, served reasonable food considering the captive market and relatively isolated location. However it was irritating that the cheaper (bar food) options had to be ordered by 4.45pm otherwise restaurant charges would apply. This was definitely the poorest of the (admittedly not great) hotels we stayed at along the Queen Charlotte Track.
"Great food, great service and a nice stay."
I recently stayed at Portage for a couple of nights as part of doing the Queeen Charlotte's track. We were a group of 3 families travelling with kids (7 adults + 6 kids). The service was excellent, food really nice. Rooms are very confortbale and it was great to have the big common area in the hotel for the kids to play on a rainny day. The kids also really enjoyed the swimming pool. we had a really good rest day from the walk and the lunch provided for next day was the best of the track. Thank you!
"A great disappointment "
We stayed here for 2 nights before the final day of the queen charlotte track. - upon arrival we went straight to the showers to wash the dirt from our 8hr hike but ours was clogged and unusable. - our room felt unclean and dated. They need to clean the tv remote between guests for instance. - overpriced meals ($40 for most mains) and minimal fresh ingredients (eg the Greek salad was tiny and had only 4 pieces of fetta) - we received a call from reception advising not to drink the water for an hour -!after my husband had just consumed a glass - as the filter had broken - the rooms are not properly sound-proofed so you can hear your neighbours - everyone was complaining - none of the other accommodations on the track felt such a rip off - in fact all the others were very pleasant (furneaux and Mahana) On the plus side, the staff were well-meaning and the views were spectacular.
"Overpriced and shabby"
Wipe your feet on the way out is all I can say. There are zero options to eat locally so your choice is overpriced curry or microwaved pasta. The staff border on rude and slovenly and the rooms are dirty. The location is superb, but having a captive audience makes the hotel feel like somewhere you want to get away from not too. It's a shame as Marlborough sound is truly stunning. There are one or two local options 20 mins away by boat , ratahiki etc. Try those first and don't waste your cash. They will run a water taxi from havelock. (The others, not the portage).
