Over The Portage Resort

We spent the last night of our Queen Charlotte Trek at this resort stumbling in after walking 24kms in the day. Anuj was the manager and he looked after us superbly as nothing was too much trouble for him. He happily arranged for us to have breakfast earlier than usual so that we could set off on our trek and when we subsequently decided not to walk because of the overnight rain he suggested that we walk half way and arranged for the water taxi to pick us up from the new location. Our room had a gorgeous view across the sound with a comfortable bed and modern bathroom. The food was delicious as the chicken curry we ate for dinner and our breakfast were both of a very high standard. It is the sort of place we could have lingered if we had more time.
Aussie hikers here. Big disclaimer! We did not stay at the resort. We hiked in from the QC track and camped at the nearby campsite. Our bags were at the hotel when we arrived. I wanted to make mention of their warm hospitality as they got us breakfast when the kitchen was not being operated due to very few guests, they also they ran us over the hill to catch our taxi boat back to Picton, they also didn't charge us for coffee. They were wonderful to us even though we weren't staying there. Next time we visit I'll make a point of staying there. The surroundings are amazing.
"Amazing Location, Average Facilities"
The road along Kenepuru Sound is amazing, stunning views with lots of pull ins, so have the camera ready to snap! The Portage Resort is in a great location, with stunning views over the sound from the bar and restaurant as well as plenty of the rooms. The Bar has a great selection and is reasonably priced. The restaurant however is quite expensive for the quality of food, compared to where else we have eaten in the vicinity. Breakfast included. Despite this, we had a great time, playing games in front of the open fire or out on the veranda, watching the night roll in and the scenery changing with it. I would definitely go back, but would make an effort to find alternative evening meal options.
Stayed her in April for 2 nights . Lovely clean accommodation overlooking the sound. Staff very friendly and helpful .Limited menu but the food was good . Shame the weather wasn't warmer as it would have been lovely to sit outside and have a drink and a dip in the pool
"Old fashioned and average standard"
To get to the hotel we took the water taxi from Picton and were met by the staff for a short journey by road to the hotel. Overall the staff were friendly, particularly the manager. The hotel is a basic design of ageing wooden buildings with basic facilities. The view over the bay was great. In hotter weather there may be a lot to do on the beach. We were there in December and it was not very hot and nobody was using the beach area. The hotel is isolated and without a car you can only walk to see things, there isn't much to see other than on the walks. We walked several kilometres each day and enjoyed the trails along the coast line. The food was very average and prices about the same for this type of hotel. As you have no other choice locally be aware of the restricted menus - unless you have a car. We stayed there over Christmas Day - the Christmas lunch option was over priced and not a good menu so we took a normal optional meal. Good laundry facilities on site. Very expensive internet connection run by a third party!
