"What a disgrace"
If ever there was a hotel which needs a visit from TV's "The Hotel Inspector", it is this place. I last visited here about 8 years ago, and it looks like nothing has been spent on renovations since my last visit. Threadbare carpet meets you in the restaurant for breakfast - maybe they think it won't be noticed because of the view. The continental breakfast is crap. The orange juice container is never refilled, this lack of care carries over to the coffee, which was also empty. Given there was only 10 in the restaurant, the staff were hardly run off their feet. No lunch service at all - we saw people bringing their own food and wine from town and eating/drinking outside at the dining tables. It would seem there is a demand there which management appear unwilling to fill. There is a small bar which opens at 4, with service from a lady who made my wife and I fell as though we were less than welcome. Glasses snatched from our tables when barely finished, with no suggestion of refill. Once again, revenue lost as we went elsewhere. - another hotel - one which we will visit again and stay next time. Servicing of the rooms involves covering the bed with the bed cover to hide the mess underneath - no attempt to tuck in the sheets or change linen was made. Marks and holes in the carpet in the room just added to the highlights of our stay. Bathrooms are tired and long overdue for a facelift. The rooms have terrible soundproofing - the sounds from the adjoining rooms is clearly audible - even over the computer monitor sized TV. Did I mention the TV, 22 inches at best and hung on the wall at a 30 degree angle for your viewing pleasure whilst doing yoga. The beds are soft, springy and well past their use-by date. Unfortunately we had booked for 3 nights and had prepaid, otherwise we would have been gone on night 1. What a total disappointment for us and a disgrace to the hotel owners and management. This hotel is a poor representation of hospitality in New Zealand. I am very disappointed to have to write this review - I believe a quick check of my numerous other reviews will show them to be fair. Avoid - you have been warned.
"Amazing views from Lakeview room!"
We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. The room was a bit small but had good heating and very comfortable bed. The highlight was the breathtaking views of beautiful lake and snow covered mountains from our room. We loved it! Bathroom was ok, had the hot water and good shower pressure all the time. They serviced our room daily, changed towels, made beds etc. but I think they did not vaccum the floor during our stay as it looked a bit dirty. Manager was very nice and polite. He gave us another password for internet when we ran out the first one, which we really appriciate. Even though we had some problem using the internet in the start but it worked really well afterwards. We could even watch a show on our laptop. Overall very good experience, would stay here again.
The views from this hotel are absolutely beautiful! A bit old but clean rooms, fantastic service and tasty food at the restaurant. Love that the bus stops right at the front of the hotel and goes to town.
"Saved by the View "
Just reviewing the restaurant. It was a tricky one. Probably three and a half stars. A bit better than average. A very nice waitress. I ordered the special - tagliatelle with clams. The clams, it transpired, were in short supply so I ordered mussels, which were delicious. The meal was a bit clunky though. Not sure that the chilli went with the creamy sauce. Jill's venison burger was very good. An okay meal, although a bit pricey. But the view... wow! Spectacular.
"You're paying for the view"
Get a lake view room and the outlook seems to make everything else seem less drastic. Not sure where to start but here goes a summary of the average stay we had - not what I would've expected for $160 per night. * Continental breakfast - don't bother. Looked like a camp breakfast. We stayed 4 nights and after the 1st breakfast we didn't return. There are plenty of lovely spots in town to eat. * Dinner - there's a reason the restaurant is empty every night. Our lamb rack on mash and veggies came out with the 3 items all having different temperatures - meat (stone cold), veggies (microwaved hot) & mash (lukewarm). They took it back to "bring another portion", of which was worse than the first. All microwaved and burnt my mouth. No discount offered. * Rooms are satisfactory, what you would expect of a 3 star. Small in size, bed was super soft and 2 singles pushed together which was interesting. Walls are SUPER THIN, so you can hear a lot of what is happening in the corridor and next room. Delightful. * Shower was a strong trickle with mould on the ceiling & on our 3rd day there the plumber was banging pipes all day next door, then we were told we didn't have any cold water that night so were given another room's key for showering...only to find out the next morning that our room wasn't affected by them turning the water off. Awkward. * "Spa" is a jacuzzi sitting out the back dock type vibe. Not the greatest experience. * Lots of websites seem to say the "short walk to town" is nothing. It's actually down a massively steep mountain and we're glad we had a car! Sorry everyone else. * Internet only works in the lobby, not the rooms which is a pain and falsely advertised. Every time we asked about it, they said I.T. would look into it. It wasn't a new "problem" though - everyone was sitting in the lobby to use it the whole week we were there and everyone was given the same response. * Limited parking so get in early if you don't want to park on the street. All this aside, the view is stunning. Would we stay there again, probably not.
