"Decent For Price...Far From Flawless"
Starting off this hotel is not in the most convenient location to much. Being about a 10 min walk from Temple of Heaven, thats the only thing going for location here. The subway is about 15-20 minutes walk which can take you almost anywhere. Its very residential and not much to do once the sunsets in this area. If you like to walk you can walk places yet its 45min-an hour to Forbidden city walking. Overall, if your looking to limit travel time in a city thats uncontrollable on traffic, map where you want and then pick a hotel in the middle of all of your spots. For the hotel itself it is somewhat newer, yet needs an update. The lobby is small, restaurant is decent yet lacks in any variety. Breakfast was included in my stay and i could see why. Some days it lacked much, others were decent and catered to more western travelers. I think perhaps the demographic of the house dictated what was served or perhaps day of the week. There are great places to eat in BJ, suggets seeking them out. For the rooms, they are a bit old. Need updating. The room would not cool down and windows opened slightly, yet not enough to change the temp. I would also say that if you do open the window expect the polluted air which is obvious once opened. On the last morning, this is what dropped the rating even more, the hotel had zero running water. No shower, sink, etc and was offered bottled water to shower. I was departing on a flight and couldn't shower or anything besides bottled water which was pretty sad. No other recovery was offered. Unfortunate. I suggest staying in another part of the city for a little more and you will get a lot more out of your stay.
"Good hotel at bad location"
The room is okay. A bit small. Clean and tidy. However the furnishing and sofa seemed old. The buffet breakfast it good. It also had some options for vegetarians. The service is good. The check in and check out was also fast. I checked out early morning and they booked a metered cab for me which came in a couple of minutes. The worst thing is the location. It is probably in a residential area. In the evening and night the nearby area becomes very dull and gloomy. The nearest subway stations are also very far. It seems okay on a map but actually it is far. Overall, it is a good hotel at a bad location.
"Ups and downs "
If it wasn't for the staff and the price this hotel would have definitely been in trouble, gave it 3/5.. Credit goes to the helpful and friendly staff, price and room cleanliness, while the breakfast is in a serious need for improvement, not a single option of cheese or dairy products, no pastries.. Though they have multiple chinese options to cater for the Chinese guests, also the location is not the best, it's good only if ur after the temple of heaven, its around 45 mins walk to tiananmen square and an hour walk to Wangfujing street
"It was ok"
The price is great, the breakfast is amazing. However, the bed was too hard and the front desk English was hit/miss. With so many other options in slightly better locations, you can find something that will offer a more positive experience.
"Never ever again"
We had a night to spend in Beijing before our return flight and, based in previous very good experiences in other Holiday Inn Express hotels, I decided to stay at the Beijing Temple of Heaven. What a mistake!! It was reasonably priced (not a bargain either), and well placed for a nice morning walk into the surrounding parks before heading to the airport. This was the only good thing about the hotel. The reception looks cheap, poorly illuminated and one has the impression to walk into an unfinished building. Things got worse when we got into our floor: the smell in the corridors was awful, a mix of cigar and dirt. Poor old carpets not very well maintained. When we entered the room, our dissapointment was complete. Not only there was no king-size bed (or queen-size), but a full sized bed with an old cushion to share with my wife. The smell was even worse in the room. My wife quickly detected small bugs going around the bathroom floor. They were around the room the morning after: kind of small flies. We did not run away immediately because if was very late at night (thanks to be given to China Eat Arwais, which brought us from Shanghai with 8 hours delay). Breakfast--included--was as good as nothing for us: the only "western-like" food was hard pre-fried eggs (somebody has to teach this guys how to do a fried egg over-easy), so I ended up eating a hard boiled egg, toasts, mandarins and pears. There was a decent array of Chines breakfast food but, sorry, we are not yet into it. I was expecting, as in my previous Holiday Inn Express stays, an unpretentious hotel, nothing fancy, but clean and with a regular standard breakfast. Much disappointed. Without doubt the worst hotel (out of 5) in our recent trip to China. One final positive note: staff in reception were very kind and, moreover, they spoke decent English--a much rare quality in Chinese hotels, even of higher standing.
