"Great value for money"

   23-02-2017
My husband and I stayed at the Travancore with my parents for one week. We found it very good value for money, the rooms were everything one would require and we had a great view of the ocean down at the bottom. The food was fantastic, super fresh and tasty. We found the staff very friendly and with it being a relatively small hotel we got to know them a little. Even though there was a large group of Russians visitors as part of a health package occupying the pool area, the pool staff went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable. We also used the gym facilities which were basic but all you needed. I would happily stay here again. Thank you

"Relaxing stay"

   20-02-2017
We stayed here for 3 nights for some beach time at the end of a long holiday when all we wanted to do was relax and not get into a car. It is a bigger resort than I expected but it is a calm place to stay and the grounds are very well maintained. Our room was higher up, well equipped and with a hammock and covered area to sit out and enjoy the view. We hoped to enjoy the Spa but were unable to get an appointment due to many overweight Russians being there on a package. Plus they also seemed to get up early and put their towels on the best sun beds by the top pool by reception!! We went elsewhere for our massages at a much better price. We preferred the lower pool closer to the beach. To get to beach level you need to take the lift down as most of the hotel is situated at a much higher level. The beach itself is very wide but the waves were very strong close to the shore meaning that I could not actually make it through to get to the calmer water behind. There are sunbeds by the sea and lots of life guards. It is a great shore line to walk along. Be prepared for the locals trying to sell fruit and clothing. Free wifi is available but the signal is fairly weak. There is a restaurant by the beach but fresh fish was not available the two times we ate there. The main restaurant was buffet style although there was also a menu with virtually all types of food, available, again I think to cater for the Russians. It was not the sort of food I would expect to eat in India. The breakfast buffet was good, but again lots of different breads and sugary buns available which I had not seen elsewhere. We bought a few items from the shop by reception. For a resort shop the prices were very good and you do not have the hassle of bargaining in the local shops, which can be fun but after weeks of it, enough is enough! I read some reviews that referred to the noise. I may have heard some noise early in the morning but assumed it was the mosque, something that has woken us up all over India. As we were there on a Sunday morning I did hear the church but though it was at a much later time. Maybe I was wrong?

"Serene and Calm Resort - Good place for a day out trip"

   19-02-2017
The resort is spread across some acres of land and in two levels of which one level is about 40 or 50 feet below the main reception level. This is accessed by an elevator or steps. Majority of the rooms are as cottages with Kerala style architecture. There are lot of trees and plants inter-laid with patches of grassy lawns. It is very quiet and peaceful in the resort. The beach is about 100 metres from the resort. Food is good. They have 2 good-sized pools. Service by the staff is excellent. Good place for a day out in groups.

"Noise pollution in Kovalam"

   19-02-2017
Small village/HUGE noise. Beautiful buildings, beautiful outlook if you're top of cliff. Just spent a very painful time from 4am to 8pm exposed to what seems to be religious sound wars from neighbouring churches blasting out sermons/electronic bells/singing/music at extremely high volume. On raising this issue the response was 'noise? What noise?' It may be that different rooms have a different experience but we're avoiding anywhere near the beach and are angry we overlook it which is a shame as that's why we came here! Good food, lovely grounds - if you could only not be ground down by the noise wars prevalent in the area. Complaints have been made by locals for years - no rest for older villagers/the sick/students' study time/families. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, nor the area, despite it being beautiful- unless you chance upon a noise free day/evening.. A great waste of beautiful natural resources.

"Beautiful spot overlooking the ocean"

   18-02-2017
This place is lovely and serene with rooms overlooking the ocean, two pools, and an aruvedic treatment center. The rooms are large but basic. The food in the main restaurant is relatively good and buffet style in the mornings and evenings. It's not advertised, but beer is available in the seafood restaurant next to the pool. The massages cost approx. 1200 rupees for a half hour head and neck or foot massage. They are given in open-air rooms with bamboo screens, which is lovely. I had a somewhat negative experience with one masseuse who wanted a tip for her personally rather than share in the tips dropped in the group tip box. The upper gift shop is relatively well priced, and you don't feel like they are hustling you. Note that you will not be able to go inside the famous local temple if you are not a HIndu.Other local activities include walking on the beach, visiting the museum on the site of a former palace (beautiful!) next to the temple, and boating in the mangrove backwater. We found the latter at 5000-6000 rupees to be a bit expensive. I'm sure if you add in lunch on one of the floating restaurants, it's even more so.
