Over The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta

Our favorite

"Colonial "

   05-12-2016
Nicely decorated hotel as the building is from colonial era. Lap pool is well maintained. I like the tea selection as well as little traditional cookies they provided. Concierge, restaurant staff were excellent, food selection very good even for vegan. Receptionists could have a better training (elaborated email was sent to hotel hoping they will improve the service).

"Wonderful Hotel in Yogya"

   04-12-2016
This hotel combines a beautiful environment with impeccable service. There was a line up for checking in when we arrived. We were promptly shown to the lobby, sat down at a table, and the receptionist came to us and checked us in there, while bringing us a refreshing drink. The hotel itself is very beautiful and offers a relaxed atmosphere to rest from the hectic city. The breakfast buffet is excellent and offers many choices. Would definitely come back.

"Quality of Service has diminished"

   01-12-2016
Phoenix Hotel used to be my favorite hotel in Yogya, but my last experience staying there has really disappointed me. I felt that the hotel management has changed and it is no longer customer oriented anymore. I am a Platinum member of Accor and everywhere I stay in Accor hotel, I will get a room upgrade usually, including in Phoenix hotel. In my last stay, I was booking a deluxe room and I was surprise that giving me deluxe pool view is already considered an upgrade. So, I complain as usually I will be upgraded either to Executive or even Suite and this time pool view is already considered an upgrade. Then, the front office staff promise me to talk to his manager and the result was that they are willing to upgrade me to Executive but since the availability was only 1 day, so, I need to move back to deluxe on the next day. So, I told him why don't you upgrade me to Suite then, because I have been staying there so many times and also many times they upgrade me to Suite also. And the FO staff said that the Suite also full, so, I do not want to argue and I did not take the upgrade because it is very inconvenient to move room. But I was still curious as I was quite sure that Suite room is still available. So, I check the website and still available. So, I come back to FO staff and told him that in website it is still available but he insist that it was full and he said that maybe the website has not been updated. I told him it is impossible that the website is not linked to the reservation. What is somebody book it and when they arrive in the hotel the hotel said that the room is not available? So, I told him that the website can not be wrong. So, this means that the hotel does not want to upgrade me. I am very disappointed with this treatment. being so loyal customer to Phoenix hotel and being Platinum member I was treated like that. I even tell them that not because they are now famous among inbound customers they become arrogant, because Grand Mercure Hotel is opening soon. They could loss their customer if they treat their loyal customer like this and surprisingly one of the FO staff answer me, no problem sir, let's see after Grand Mercure open. What an arrogant answer. I feel Phoenix hotel has changed a lot. I do not see any personal touch anymore. Phoenix Hotel was best manage by Mr. Franck Loison as the GM as I really can feel the care to customers and also employees. After he was rotated to other hotel, I feel Phonix Hotel service slowly diminishing

"Old colonial atmosphere in a central location"

   01-12-2016
After a wonderful 3 day stay at the Amata resort in Borobudor, we stayed at this historic hotel for our anniversary in October. For the check in we were brought into a living room area which was totally authentically preserved. It was like stepping back into another era, when Indonesia was still a colony of the Netherlands. The girl who checked us in was not particularly welcoming, but everyone else we encountered was fabulous: the male staff at the check in counter; the restaurant and bar staff as well as members of the housekeeping staff. When we got to our room, we got a pleasant surprise: the bed was beautifully decorated with flower petals and bamboo leaves, spelling out "happy anniversary." To top it off, we also received a delicious chocolate cake spelling out the same. A warm, and wonderful welcome! We ate at the hotel restaurant for our anniversary dinner, and my nasi goring and sate were as delicious as any I had on my trip in Indonesia. The food was as good as my grandma (oma) used to make! There was a male dancer performing a traditional dance to gamelan music while we ate, which I truly enjoyed. We went for happy hour at the hotel bar a couple of times, and the staff there was wonderful. The host with the most was the bar manager? who chatted with everyone in perfect English due to the fact he worked on a cruise ship for many years. He made going to the bar a very happy occasion. Yogjakarta is not the most scenic of cities, but some of the colonial buildings have been preserved. The shopping for souvenirs for people back home was the best due to the very cheap prices there. All the action was close to the hotel, and we walked to all the places we wanted to see. Yogjakarta is not pedestrian friendly, but we managed to make it out alive in spite of the crazy traffic conditions. It is also close to the train station, but we took a cab because we did not want to traverse the crazy streets with our luggage. Overall, we loved our stay at the Phoenix. Highly recommended for people who enjoy ambience over generic 5 star properties. But do not get the cheapest rooms, but upgrade. You won't be sorry.
