"A gem in a garden"
This lodging is hidden in the backyard garden of a Buddhist wat. It consists of five buildings representing different building traditions in Laos. It’s more like a bungalow area in a well-kept orchard than a hotel in the traditional meaning. My room was in the Tradition 1925 building. The design of the buildings and the interior of the rooms try to comply with the Laotian style and architecture as much as possible. My room had all the modern amenities, though, it was spacious, clean and the furniture was comfy. I didn’t like the creaking floor planks. Also the shower hose was so short I had to shower my head on the knees. The breakfast was served in a terrace of one of the buildings. I missed more options, but never left hungry after breakfast. The pool is not big, but the pool area is really beautiful. I liked the natural design of the hotel and orchard-like environment. The service was really kind, but did not meet the standard I expected. The location is not perfect, it’s 15 – 20 minutes from the centre by walk and 7 – 10 minutes by tuk-tuk
"Comfortable but lacking warmth"
We stayed here for 3 nights in a dark though large ground floor room with a good bathroom. The breakfast was disappointingly meagre in choice and the staff, including the manager, were not the most warm. They made an arithmetical mistake with our bill and I was made to feel guilty. Also laundry costs were high. The situation was good, just out of the centre, allowing a variety of walking options into town. We loved Luang Prabang but will stay elsewhere next time.
As the hotel is right beside a Buddist monastery you get woken every morning at 6 by the ringing of bells and beating of drums....but you also get to feel part of the country! On arrival we asked the French owner if we could eat in the restaurant. He did not mention the set menu was no longer served after 1930h so we had a drink in the bar. When we got to the restaurant at 2000h it was too late!! Also they only serve red wine by the bottle in the restaurant.....luckily we knew the bar sold white wine. But it still took a while to sort this out....no idea why! Still the pool is nice (small) and the rooms quaint (noisy if you are ground floor you hear the people above walking around). Breakfast good. Staff in restaurant in the evening spoke little english whereas the breakfast staff spoke good english. Bikes for free loan were ok.
"Pros and Cons"
I had a lovely 4 night stay at Villa Maydou. I stayed in one of the older historic rooms and found it to be quite large and comfortable. The overall feel of the place is charming and quiet. The breakfast was simple but quite good. The location is also a bonus. It was a 10 minute walk to the night market and other interesting spots. There are bikes available to use which came in very handy. I did not get an overly warm and friendly feel from the staff but they were attentive we we asked for help.
"A haven of peace and tranquility in Luang Prabang"
This hotel is really well managed, the team is dedicated to give its best to its customers. The old colonial-style buildings are incredibly beautiful and kept in their original spirit. The swimming pool was very nice after a day of walking in Luang Prabang town. All in all, this is one of the best hotels I know in LPB.
