We booked this holiday through Trail Finders and were really unsure what to expect having never been to the Maldives before or done a 'typical paradise' holiday. The moment we arrived we knew it was a good choice, everything about this Island was superb. The staff are friendly, the island is immaculate, the accommodation is perfect and the food is amazing. This is truly a place to relax, unwind and enjoy. We did a turtle excursion and that delivered as we swam with one and the snorkelling around the island is very good with regular sharks, cuttlefish, octopus and all sorts of other marine life was present. All in all fantastic holiday.
"The good, the bad and the ugly!"
The good. We stayed in a premium delux sunset water villa with hot tub and it was absolutely stunning. Steps down to the ocean, the view and the immaculate room which was cleaned each day – If your budget can stretch to this, I’d recommend the upgrade as we found out that the non – premium water villas were smaller and had a much smaller decking. We were on the all-inclusive option and are glad we did not pay the extra for gold as there was more than enough choice with drinks and food. The Thai restaurant is delicious, we didn’t eat in the Italian and found that the Arabian restaurant was chargeable. Our villa was near the end and we loved the walk, it only takes a few minutes and when you have the views and different fish alongside the path each time, it is simply beautiful. The buffet restaurant has a different theme each day and the food was also delicious. We met the executive chef who regularly came out to chat to the guests. The staff are what make’s Centara -a big thank you to Mama in the mornings for his amazing omelettes and Kudoo for his wonderful service. The pool bar is brilliant apart from the day trippers which I will mention further down. Again, the staff, Zoey, Arif and Lovely. These people work so hard and often receive negative and rude comments from day trippers and guests. They do not deserve this and it is difficult to watch. The Vue bar is stunning for sunsets and later after dinner – again Samantha and Stephen thank you!.The hotel is beautiful but we met a couple who were in a water bungalow on the other side of the island. Their views were awful as you can clearly see the rubbish island as well as each villa facing each other so no privacy. I think the hotel should remove these villas as if I had this view, I wouldn’t have felt that I was in paradise. The Bad – The management are greedy and are only helpful when getting money or when trying to sell you an extra. We are glad we did not upgrade to the gold all inclusive as when eating in the restaurants from the non-all inclusive menu, they add tax on each meal, so as well as paying for the upgrade, you then get hit with tax.We did not feel that we missed out on anything on our package. Our check out was 12pm and our return pick up wasn’t until 6pm,. We asked if we could keep the room on as the weather had taken a turn for the worst and we had rain storms all day. We were told at check-out that this wasn’t possible and we had also been cut off from having a lunch! We asked to speak to the manger as when paying £1000 per day, we thought this was very distasteful. The man who dealt with had no customer service skills and didn’t care about this situation. We asked to speak to a manager but were told that they were all in a meeting for the whole day. Even though we were not being picked up for 6 hours, he didn’t care and refused to assist us even though we said this was not on any paperwork and we felt like prisoners now stuck on their Island. The ugly – day trippers One of the days we were in the pool bar, three boats arrived full of guests wanting to get the best of their alcohol all inclusive package. They took over the pool bar completely. We were forced to leave as we had to queue at the bar to get a drink. These guests were loud, obnoxious and rude to the staff. Our last day was complete hell, due to the fact we had nowhere to go and was waiting for a manager to discuss our lunch complaint, we sat at the pool bar under cover. A group of no less than 10 men arrived and it went from bad to totally unacceptable. These men were from an Indian background, they were perverted to me, another female guest and Zoey from the bar. The three bar staff were outnumbered and our sympathies are with them, they should not have to deal with this behaviour. They continued to get louder and kept running behind the bar trying to help themselves, they were all jumping off the bar into the water and being so out of control. At one point, security arrived when they attempted to throw a couple into the pools who were returning from their lunch. They should have been removed then. However, just like the greedy management, no manager came to address this situation and these men were allowed to carry on. I would not recommend Centara to anyone; the staff are wonderful but the management appalling. The Maldives is beautiful so I am sure another hotel can offer better than this resort. It cost us a fortune to stay for two weeks and the day trippers really do spoil the atmosphere between guests and staff in the pool area. I have since emailed the manager but just like other comments on this, they do not respond. Save your money and book another resort.
"Resort riding on location "
Having arrived and swiftly going through immigration we were promptly met and taken to a modern well presented speedboat with very efficient and welcoming staff. After a pleasant 25 minute crossing we were met and greeted by smiling staff and taken to the reception area and given a nice welcome drink and refreshingly cool towel. Check in was efficient and our wait for the room was about half an hour even though we arrived mid morning when check in is 2.00pm. We had booked an overwater villa but our travel agent had not advised us of the difference between sea view and sunset view only between standard or one with an external bath tub. Having been shown into our simple but nice villa with sea view it was easily apparent the sunset view is a lot more picturesque so we decided to upgrade. If we had done so at booking stage it would have been under £100 but doing it on the day cost us £300 but well worth it!! (300 even numbers are sunset). We paid for gold additional all inclusive but were constantly reminded that things were not included and had to prompt the staff of the gold service. Food is diverse but can be bland and over cooked with the choice of four dining facilities. The overall facilities are ok but be ready to pay over the odds if you want to do anything. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT- there are day visitors who congregate around the pool area and generally took to overindulge in alcoholic drinks so the noise level could be a bit overwhelming when you are sold this idyllic holiday. This occurred nearly every day during our week long stay. In summary but not trying to sound too harsh the hotel is living off the back of its location and could offer a lot more if it tried. Maldives is nice but we have visited better places in the world that offer vastly superior surroundings and services and a lot better value for money.
"Worth every penny"
What a lovely place. I normally don't spend time writing reviews, but this is exceptional. We stayed in a overwater sunset villa. So peaceful stay. Food was great too. Our villa was very comfortable and the staff was very attentive and friendly. We would definitely return back.
Small resort, can walk around in 7 minutes! We had a beach villa, double doors opening directly onto the sand, which was white & beautiful. Then 2 rows of sunbeds nestling under the palm trees, with umbrellas, & then the sea, The sea is walk-in warm, & a few tropical fish swim around you. Where there are rocks, yet more stunning fish to snorkel & watch. First thing in the morning, small reef (harmless) sharks swim by, also saw an octopus & rays. Really good buffet (you must go all inclusive), fresh water in your room every day, with tea & coffee. Comfy large bed, good shower, enough space to unpack. A really wonderful place to unwind, great staff too. So there is a draw back; a few times a week, when the cruise ships stop at Male, up to 160 guests troop onto your idyll & ruin it. Thats 1/3 extra people. We did complain & suggested an area was set aside for residents, so that the (frequently loud) visitors, who are there from 10.30ish to 4ish cannot steal all the sunbeds. Those in the water villas were unable to get a beach sunbed on those days... If I was visiting The Maldives again, I would be very careful to look at this aspect when making my choice. Also one of the rubbish burning islands is fairly close by, not in our view from the main beach, but again, something to look at when making your choice. All in all, fabulous, and yes, I would recommend!!
