"A Firm Favourite"

   29-03-2017
We've stayed at The Datai at least 8 times and it never disappoints. The mix of jungle and beach is very special and the staff make every stay memorable. The Thai Pavillion is our first choice for dinner - set amongst the tree tops with sounds of the jungle. Breakfast is consistently good with a lovely choice of fresh alternatives - both Asian and Western. We look forward to our next visit.

"Absolutely fantastic"

   29-03-2017
we went there during Lima 17, a large SEA aerospace and maritime exhibition, so everywhere on the island there was extra security and punctuality of scheduled flights was not given and around the airport and inside the building there was a lot of chaos. My advice: Do not go during LIMA conference. The Hotel was great: check-in: took only 5 minutes, welcome champagne was offered as were cold towels Dinner: was offered in Thai restaurant (very good service; very good food), in Malay restaurant in the rainforest (Gulai - high standard; very good quality) or at the beach club (grill; one night buffet). If you want a special treat you can even book a private table on the beach, lit by candle light, serviced by a private waiter. I highly recommend this. Golf: transfer to the Els Club golf course is being offered (8 min. drive). The course is very attractive although it does not have any bunker (!), but several water hazards and difficult greens. Other highlight: A lot of wildlife around (monkeys; giant squirrels; monitor lizard; kites and eagles). Especially fascination: not only the gekkos were running on the walls but also some of the frogs; amazing! Hotel will close in summer for ten months to undergo renovation. Basically, the concept will remain unchanged, a few pool villas will be added, as will be a conservation building.Congratulations to Lyndon and his team: It always feels like being at home far away!

"Perfect resort location with stunning beach villas"

   29-03-2017
We stayed in a one bedroom Beach Villa for a week at the end of March. The stunning rainforest gardens and surrounds combine with the powdery white beach and its warm, clean waters to create perhaps the best resort location we’ve visited. We snorkelled off the beach, above coral and fish – the water is cloudy, perhaps due to leaf litter from the rainforest, but still enjoyable. Kayaking to a nearby island gave us another opportunity to see coral through clear waters. Throughout our stay we encountered Hornbills, Macaque monkeys and Leaf monkeys in our villa and the hotel gardens. Free, guided morning and evening nature walks are offered most days. A half day excursion on the resort’s unique, Malay schooner into the Malacca Straits was fabulous, a fun opportunity to meet other guests over champagne, dine on gourmet picnic fare and take a refreshing dip off that stunning yacht. In addition to the well-equipped, uncrowded gym, paths throughout the resort provide good running trails, with a 200 step stone staircase available for those who really need to get their heart rate up. Beach villas guests are provided with a butler service and our butler Bhairu was first class - warm, kind, perceptive, respectful of our privacy and proactive in his assistance. We could not imagine a better butler service.  The degree of thought that has gone into the new Beach Villas’ design and facilities is impressive. It’s as if any gripe about any five star hotel ever voiced on TripAdvisor has been noted and addressed, the most notable being the total absence of ‘nickel and diming’: each day a complimentary half bottle of Moet is placed in both the minibar fridges in your lounge and bedroom pavilions; complimentary black label scotch and other spirits, mixers, juices, Evian and snacks are refreshed each day; the dining/lounge pavilion is equipped with an espresso machine and complimentary Illy coffee etc and a daily platter of mangoes, grapes and other fruits; you can choose to have 3 tiers of ‘afternoon tea’ delicacies served in your villa or the lobby lounge each day; the bathroom, dressing room and bedroom all have separate air conditioning so you can shower without a subsequent tropical sweat; many of the abundant power points are universal, and will accept power cords from around the world;  a ‘fitbit’ type entry bracelet replaces  a room key - no time wasted on working out how to carry a key in your bikini; the dressing room includes large full length mirrors, two separate make-up mirrors (one magnified,) as well as a shaving mirror in the bathroom. Unfortunately, the hotel’s poor internet connection was not on par with the villa’s overall quality and became quite frustrating at times. We greatly enjoyed the food and beverage offerings, from the delicate breakfast pastries to the spicy Malay ‘romantic dinner’ served beach-side and the chilli-spiked cocktail ‘When in the Datai’. Again service was amazingly friendly at each venue. Some waiters were relatively new to the hotel, from South Asian countries such as Nepal and India, and tried valiantly to field our questions about the Malaysian rainforests before we realised our error. We thank all the Datai restaurant staff for making our stay so lovely, in particular Daba at the Beach side restaurant. Every night we returned from dinner to an immaculate turn-down service - our black marble and granite bathroom filled with candle-light and our pool surrounded with lantern candles. The perfect end to each perfect day in this perfect place.

"A little bit of paradise!"

My wife and I recently stayed at the Datai Langkawi for our honeymoon, we were greeted promptly and warmly at Langkawi airport by one of their chauffeur drivers who took us to the hotel (approx 40 mins away). The staff at the hotel were welcoming and arranged for all of our bags to be taken to our villa whilst we checked in and had our welcome drinks (malay tea and a cocktail). The Rainforest Villa (Villa 41), we stayed in for the first four nights, it was quite simply, incredible! Perched in the rainforest and very private, we were surrounded by beautiful trees and the sounds of nature (even if the Cicada “song” can get a bit irritating!). The Villa was a beautiful open space, clean and with a stunning balcony that just dropped into the rainforest, daily housekeeping and turn down service and use of drinks from the mini bar (excluding alcohol) was complimentary. Also, as we were honeymooners, a bottle of champagne was awaiting us upon arrival, which was a nice touch. The hotel grounds are truly breath-taking, the Datai is set in an enormous section of rainforest which opens out onto a practically private beach cove. The walk to the beach itself is absolutely stunning, wooden walkway surrounded by beautiful trees, plants and butterflies. The beach has plenty of amenities including rental of water sport gear, a bar and hotel staff who keep you topped up with water and ice creams through the day. Also for those less keen on wandering the grounds, the hotel offer a complimentary buggy service to take you around, though I’d strongly recommend exploring the grounds as you never know what animals you’ll see! Our personal favourite was leaving our villa to be greeted by a 3ft monitor lizard! For the final part of our honeymoon trip, we upgraded to one of the hotel’s beautiful beach villas (Beach Villa 5). We were absolutely blown away by the size and facilities as well as the spectacular view from the deck of the ocean. You have your own reserved spot and sunbeds on the (already private) beach which are about 50 yards from the villa! The Lounge area was beautiful and had all the amenities you could think of, including a ‘butler phone’ to contact your 24hour butler... the beach villa included afternoon tea and a full range of drinks (alcoholic & non alcoholic). The only thing that was extra was anything from their wine fridge. The Bedroom and bathroom area were exquisite, you could literally dive from your bed into your own private swimming pool! I cannot praise the facilities highly enough! The only small hiccup we encountered was when the AC unit in our lounge packed up, the staff were in very quickly but it took 3 different attempts to fix the problem leaving us without use of the lounge area for most of the day, which was a shame. Food The Datai has 4 restaurants which includes The dining room (European), the pavilion (malay and thai), the beach house (mainly grilled fish and meats but a selection of other dishes too) and the Gulai house. The beach house and pavilion were superb, the staff were friendly and the food was magnificent! Exchange rate compared to UK was £1 = 5 MYR (ringitt) and meals were approx 20-65 MYR (starter) and 50-180 for a main course. We did book a meal in the ‘dining room’ but upon arriving were told of the dress code for men of ‘closed shoes and trousers’... the evenings in March are usually 26 -33°C... needless to say we cancelled our reservation as the prospect of sitting in shoes and trousers in that heat wasn’t appealing, thus I can’t comment on the food there, but from observation it was the least busy of the 4 dining outlets on most evenings. One issue we did encounter was having to have the same conversation daily with staff about my Wife's food allergies, despite us mentioning this in our booking and to staff on our arrival we had to go over this daily with restaurant staff, once discussed they very accommodating and were able to offer a generally wide range of alternatives. Finally is the Gulai house, which is tucked away at the edge of the Datai's grounds. This was by far our favourite restaurant! Value for money, quality of food and warmers of staff, the Gulai had it all! For our last 5 days we dined there 4 times! I cannot rate it highly enough! Activities Whilst at the Datai we made use of most of the things the hotel offers, walks with the resident naturalist (Irshad) who was a fountain of knowledge and a delight to converse with! Jungle Trekking was good fun (minus the mosquito bites) but the times quoted allow for much less active participants, e.g. quoted as a 3 hour trek, my wife and I completed it in less than 80mins and the cost remained the same. The hotel also offers various complimentary yoga/Pilates classes (my wife attended these). In addition to the complimentary walks there were guest speakers at the hotel weekly who would explore various topics (sadly we missed this due to getting lost in the grounds) and things like the ‘butterfly walk’ were also options. Of particular note was the Sunset cruise which places you aboard a beautiful, hand crafted, authentic malay vessel. Champagne, appetizers and fantastic company were just a small part of this spectacular boat’s charm! It’s authenticity married perfectly with the Datai's natural roots and spectacular experience. The crew were wonderful and the revelation that the skipper had built the ship himself made it all the more incredible! I can’t recommend a cruise with them highly enough! Spa My wife and I attended the spa twice during our stay, once for a couples ‘deep tissue' massage and the second for a joint ‘shiatsu' massage. The spa staff were very friendly and accommodating and the therapists were excellent and attentive! The only disappointment was finding out that the “90 minute treatment” was actually only 60 mins and the other 30 mins included changing/drinking tea etc. Whilst the spa experience and facilities were wonderful and the surroundings were picturesque and relaxing, I feel this is slightly misleading in the way it is presented. Price-wise, the 90 minutes ‘experience’ were 480 ringitt which is roughly £95 per person, so pretty much the upper end of what one would expect to pay for a 60 minute massage. I should add that the 30 mins also included a foot bath which was very pleasant. Overall The Datai is a truly spectacular hotel, set in incredible grounds, the staff were friendly and courteous at all times and did their utmost to attend to our every need. Some of the buildings/communal areas did appear slightly worn out, which is no doubt why the hotel is due to close for re-furbishment. Whilst there was some confusion at times of my wife's dietary requirements most of the restaurants (the Gulai especially) made a conscious effort to accommodate this, it did not tarnish our experience of the Datai. Food Variety = 9/10 Food Quality = 9/10 Facilities = 8/10 (purely due to needing refurbishment) Activities = 8/10 Spa = 8/10

"Beautiful Surroundings"

   27-03-2017
We have just returned from an 11 night stay at The Datai and after reading so many reviews on here we was expecting something amazing. The Datai is set in the beautiful rain forest with the most amazing sights and sounds and the grounds are looked after perfectly. The lay out of the hotel is also very good and you can feel at times like you are the only ones there. The food is by far 5 star, but the hotel overall I would only give 4 stars. The good things - 1. Food, excellent 2. the surroundings 3. the lay out of the hotel 4. it is very clean The not so good bits - 1. Upon arrival (at night after 20 hours of travelling) we checked in and as we were staying for a while in our package we was given 2 evening meals free, they wanted us to decide what restaurant we wanted to take these meals in and what time. We thought this was not necessary right at this time and could of waited until the morning, as all we wanted to do was be shown to our room and sleep. 2. Service was good but not in anyway 5 star, we have stayed in other hotels and received much better service. Apart from our first full day we had to get our own beach towels and carry them back to the sunbeds and make them up ourselves. This I would normally expected to be done in a 5 star hotel. 3. The rooms are in a desperate need of the refurbish that is happening this year, they are very clean but worn out and old fashioned. The lighting in the rooms are dreadful, but hoping the refrub will address these problems. Overall our stay was good and we will probably go back in a few years time. The rain forest walks are a must, you learn so much. I would recommend The Datai. Would also like to say that the following staff were AMAZING. Edy, - The Gulai Hse Multi - The Pavillion Azil - The Beach Hut Thanks guys :-)
