"Beautiful hotel with great service"
This hotel has a lot of charm with great facilities. The swimming pool is beautiful, especially at night, the buffet restaurant is declicious (french head chef) and the room had a very comfortable bed. The best thing though was the welcoming and friendly staff. They made our stay really special with many thoughtful gestures and it was an amazing introduction to a beatiful country. Thank you again...we look forward to returning.
"A most salubrious & pleasant retreat from hot, dry & dusty Mandalay. "
We were a group of about one dozen from Australia & New Zealand (predominantly). We were on a field trip with an aid agency in the Mandalay area for half a week. It was wonderful to return to this most relaxing, beautiful & air conditioned hotel each day. The hotel looks like something out of a Hollywood movie in the 1930's. It has a large & glamorous lobby & bar with gentle Burmese live music at various times & live musicians in the evening. It is very well located being so close to 'the hill' which is the place to view Mandalay at sunset. The pool & surrounds are gorgeous. We could stand in the pool & have our drinks. One evening our group leader had arranged for dinner in the atrium outside with a cultural show which was excellent! Breakfast was very good indeed - with everything covered in the smorgasbord along with the chef cooking omelette etc. The rooms are very dark as they are lined with dark timber & which some may find depressing but the view of the hill at night more than makes up for it. The bed was very good & pillows excellent as there are a range of choices. Ask for a room looking at the hill.
"Could and should have been better"
Pulling up to the hotel and you think all good. Fancy lobby area and check in was quick and easy. Booked a junior suite on the eight floor. Room looked like it hadn't been redecorated since the 1970's. Had to call maintenance due to a blocked drain in the shower, as the floor began to flood after about two minutes. None of the drawers had stoppers or guides on them so if you pull too far they'll come out or be an effort to put back in. A real niggle was only two electrical sockets in the whole of the suite available that weren't already connected to a light fitting. Only one in the bedroom that was not by the bed either. If you wanted to use the hairdryer you would have to sit on the floor. Is that what you are really paying over $200 a night for? The balcony was barely that. Just a small outdoor area with enough room for two to stand but no room for a table and chairs. There is an executive lounge on that floor but what it's purpose is, I couldn't fathom. There are four tables with chairs and a tv. No drinks or food set out or even a member of staff was ever there during our stay. Maybe it was because it was low season but again that should not matter at those rates. Having said that, the staff were all very pleasant and food was average, nothing special but good enough. Of the three resturants at the hotel, two were closed for refurbishment. It would seem the hotel was gearing up for the busier times of year and so happy enough to provide a skeleton service for now. Pool area was quite nice, good temperature and a pool bar that again wasn't staffed so there went our afternoon drink. A bitterly disappointing time when we had been looking forward to it so much for our first time in Mandalay. This hotel could definitely do with some serious competition because it certainly needs to up its game.
"Top notch Mandalay lodging"
Both literally and figuratively, the MHRH sticks out among the hotels in Mandalay. At the foor of Mandalay Hill, with a stunning view of a green landscape dotted with golden pagodas, at has everything for your comfort and relaxation. Moreover (as I was there for work) it has great conference facilities. Staff are helpful and fiendly, food is excellent and the pool is porbably its biggest asset - well designed and big. I am not sure when this hotel was built, but the bathrooms would suggest sometime in the 1970s - mine was smallish, with shower in bath tub and shower curtain. The room was spacious, clean, and well maintained. The hotel is just minutes drive from the palace and many temples/pagodas can be found in its surroundings. The hotel shops tend to be overprized.
"Disappointed on my 1st visit to Mandalay"
Since it was our 1st visit in Mandalay and booked a junior suite for my boyfriend's 40th bday (I informed the hotel before we arrived), I was told that only a bday card will be provided. I have to pay USD122 for a cake! It was a beautiful and an upmarket hotel but the attitude of the duty manager really put me off. I asked her where I can take my bf for a special bday dinner. Their 2 restaurants were close for renovation. Only the coffee shop and a bar were open. She said-- " Check the tripadvisor, they have very good suggestions there", I already checked tripadvisor but thought as a local, she can give me a more personalised advice. So I just asked her for a taxi and politely asked if she can get us a good price. USD12 for a 2 mile drive. Much more expensive than a taxi drive in Dubai, which I thought was an expensive city. I will not recommend Mandalay to anyone if this is a normal practice there. Go straight to Bagan, if breaking your journey is the intention. I have told my friends too who were thinking of doing our itinerary.
