"Bentota"

Stayed at the Centara Ceysands in November 2017 for three nights and enjoyed their beautiful hotel and grand service. Only way to get to the hotel is by boat as the hotel is surrounded by water. A river on one side and ocean front with white sandy beach on the other. Highly recommend this hotel

"An amazing place with even more amazing staff!"

   06-12-2017
We stayed at Centara Ceysands for two weeks half board in October. I can’t recommend this hotel enough. The staff couldn’t do enough for us and were so friendly and always smiling. They looked after us so well! The hotel itself is beautiful and the rooms were spacious, clean and comfy. We had an ocean view with a balcony looking out over the pool and beach and the views were incredible, never seen sunsets like it! The staff in the spa provided us with an amazing massage and again were so so friendly and smiley, just what you want when you’re on holiday. The food was a buffet in the morning and evening and the food was tasty, fresh and well varied. There was a day when we headed out on a day excursion and our driver had a little car bump, nothing serious but took some time out of our day so the hotel staff brought us up a bottle of wine and a fruit platter to make amends, much appreciated. There is a boat house run by a team of lovely men, who we befriended and ended up hanging out with them in the evenings, these guys made our holiday and we came home having made lots of new friends. Special mention to Rohan, Rowan, Udara and Dhammike. These guys are amazing at what they do and made us feel so at home. If anything, they need paying more than they are being currently because they are an absolute credit to the resort and provide a lot of fun and adventure to all the guests. Another special mention to Lakmal who works in the restaurant poolside, he looked after us every day and was so kind and friendly, the man is an absolute diamond! I couldn’t recommend the hotel enough, it has everything you need. The beach is a stones throw away and practically untouched and the river runs along the other side of the hotel with loads of water sports and fun things to do. There is a decent sized gym and the pool is massive! Plenty of room for swimming lengths. The staff absolutely made our holiday here and gave us enough memories to last a lifetime. Thank you so much for looking after us, we will definitely be back!

"Great location"

   05-12-2017
On arrival the hotel looked ok and standard, it was clean well-kept as where the rooms. However the longer we stayed the more the hotel grew on me and that was even with the in climate weather. The pool area was great and well-kept and the pool was long for anyone wanting to swim lengths. The beach is so close to the hotel and pool area and is literally untouched – it is so pretty. Our room didn't have a pool view or really any view from the balcony but it was spacious, clean and adequate. Also had everything you wanted in it. The bathroom was well sized and handy that it had a separate toilet and shower. The wardrobe was quirky that you could walk through from the bedroom into the bathroom from it which was a great novelty. We were on half board option and the breakfast was yummy, I note some said it was repetitive but sure even breakfast at home is. There was a live egg station, (egg hoppers are yum) fruit, yogurt, fresh bread, potatoes, beans and then Indian curry and rice. There was adequate choice to keep you full up with lunch only needing a nibble. You could eat at the Thai and the 360 restaurant with 200ruppees credit. As we were only there a few days we just ate at the buffet. Breakfast times are 7am-10am and dinner 7pm – 10pm. Drink prices were ok for local drinks, fair enough more expensive than other places but not quite as expensive as home. There is a wine shop close by on the other side of the peninsula and there are mini bars in the rooms. We also took a tip from reading TripAdvisor reviews and asked the cleaner for more water which they gave no problem as you get 1 litre a day in the room. There are different theme nights in the hotel for dinner and again the food was tasty and plentiful. There is also always an Sri Lankan curry and rice, western potatoes and also fruit ice cream and treats. The poppadum’s nightly were also fresh and very tasty. We found that it was easy to head out to the local town and it was a short 5 minute walk from the boat. There was a grocery store, wine shop and a few wee bits and bobs and also a few bakeries so nice as the weather wasn't great to go for a wander. The only unfortunate thing was that we had a points card and also I had told them it was my husband’s birthday and they had said they would bring amenities to the room however this didn't happen. Also we had been told previously that we could upgrade our half board to half board plus but on arrival were told that we would have to do this for the duration as opposed to just one night of the stay. The hotel and food was great for the few days to relax. There were also a good few about the hotel so a good buzz and atmosphere about it. We were there during unseasonal thunderstorm but no one can change the weather. I would recommend staying here for some relaxation and chill out, I’m just not sure if the additional for the half board plus was worth it though.

"As the Crow Flies"

   03-12-2017
We stayed here for 5 nights for the second part of our visit around Sri Lanka. As for the title, that will be explained later on. First the good points: Other than the staff, security team and the pool I cannot find any other good points with this hotel. All other points: Room The room allocated to us was small and looked over a grubby roof with a tiny view of the river in the top right corner though the trees. The second room provided (and only other option given to us) was on the ground floor which looked out onto a tiny piece of grass land with 3 metal man holes were a delight (NOT!). The cleanliness was applying has a spiders web was in the bathroom and must have been there for some time for it was considerably large. Even the cleaner stated a comment about Spider Man when he came to clean it, which I had to finish off after he had left. When they mowed the grass it flew all over the outside seating area and as I could not get a cleaner to come and sort it I found a brush and cleaned it myself. The scum that had accumulated in the corners of the shower screen on the floor looked disgusting and nothing was done about that either. Food As we were on half board the meals had to be taken in Cafe Bem as this was a buffet style restaurant and this was included in the half board package. The food was poor to average and most of it was the same night after night. They do put on a different theme every night but each night they missed the point of the theme. For instance, on Mexican night they cooked a very well done pork chop with some sort of cucumber salsa. a burrito which looked like it had been ran over by a car and a 4 bean soup with no beans, just a spicy water with floating bits in it. COME ON, if you're going to do Mexican top of the list is Chilli Con Carne. There are 2 other restaurants, which they give each person 2000LKR (appox £10) towards to the cost of the meal. Anything over this amount you have to pay for and after looking at the prices you would be spending approximately £30 per person to get a decent meal. So if my calculations are correct you would be paying £40 for 2 to eat in these restaurants each night. Drinks The local Lion beer (approx' £3.50 for a 650ml bottle) is OK but does get gassy after a couple of them. Wine in Sri Lanka is very expensive and can cost you around £30 a bottle depending on what you have. Please note the £30 is the bottom end of the market and goes up from there. You can get it cheaper from the wine shops but they start at around £14 for a bottle of Jacobs Creek. Pool and Surrounding Area The pool is a nice place to be which is segregated from the beach with a hedge row and a path. This area is patrolled by the security team to make sure the beach touts do not hassle you on the premises. My only reservation with this area is with the title 'As the crow flies'. On a day were we sat around the pool there were around 50-60 crows all sitting on the roof top. Once they see someone having food being delivered to them they descend around them and start fighting with each other to get best position. The noise as well is not pleasant and spoils the whole atmosphere of a relaxing time. Location When my partner and I looked at this we thought it would be an ideal area but this proved wrong. Although the boat service ran efficiently, in hind sight I would much rather liked to have been able to walk directly to the local shops and not have to use the water crossing. This was especially true when the rain came for you had no choice other than to wait for the rain to stop or get wet. They tried their best to wipe the seats on the boat but doing this with a soaking wet towel only makes it look not so wet. Comments I'm not one of those who come back home and just vent all of my negative views out on Tripadvisor. Each time something went wrong at the time I phoned for the cleaner or aired my views with a member of the team. In doing this they tried their best to rectify the problem and even laid on a complementary meal on our last night, which was the best meal we had the whole time of our stay. But this does suggest that attention to detail does exist if you're willing to pay the extra for it. Conclusion Would I ever stay here again? The answer is no. Would I suggest the Centara Ceysands to anyone? I would suggest that they do their own homework and make that decision for themselves. As the poet John Lydgate said "You can’t please all of the people all of the time".
