"Exactly what we wanted"
After spending several days of busy scheduling and travel we wanted to end our visit to Sri Lanka with something more calm and relaxing. Avani provided just that. The test of a good hotel is how they deal with any problems. We were not entirely happy with the room we had originally booked, but without fuss or problems the manager upgraded us. From that point on the stay was simply excellent. All the staff are friendly and pleasant at all times. We were looked after as well as you could want. The location is, in our opinion, superior to the Aventura sister hotel. The Avani is right on the sea and we had only seconds walk to be on the beach. The hotel is also very airy and pleasant to be in with a lot of places to settle down with a book or drink (try fresh pineapple juice, or king coconut). If you stay here be aware that Sri Lankan time suits the 30 degree plus temperature (feels more like 40 at midday) and high humidity climate. Relax, leave all that pressured, do it now stuff from home behind and just enjoy it all. This is NOT club land. Yes, you are being spoilt. This is a 4 star hotel but feels more like a 5 at times. There is a wide variety of food available and there is always something you will enjoy, and there are local eateries along the beach or towards Kalutara. We love the seemingly endless variations of rice and curry ( that is meant as a positive comment) but the 'Italian' evening, for example, was very well done. This is a hotel we would thoroughly recommend. Just be sure that you know before you come that the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. If you think this is because it is a hotel for supposedly sedate over 60's (earlier reviewer look hard at your attitude to age) you will be wrong. There was a wide variety of ages and a very international feel. The period when we visited was quiet on bookings, but that simply meant even more room to spread yourself and relax. Excellent! Outside it is sleeting rain here in downtown Winchester, 7 degrees, yesterday it was 33, brilliant blue sky and sea, large breakers, palms.....
"An amazing stay"
The hotel itself is on the beach and although you can't really swim because of the strong currents, it was still nice to be able to go for walks on the beach. The pool is next to the beach so on the days when we weren't doing excursions we stayed there. Staff is really attentive and friendly. Our rooms were quite spacious and there were always flowers and fruit put in by the room attendants - every evening whilst at dinner they come round and spray bug spray everywhere so if it's something you wouldn't like then tell them. The food - we loved it! It was nice to always have the option of Sri Lankan food or western food. At every meal time you had half the food was local and the other half was western so when we wanted a break from curry we could have something else. Every Friday night was Sri Lankan night when all the food is local and is served outside on the lawn with traditional dance and music as entertainment. Loved it! Would definitely go back.
"A RETURN VISIT"
We stayed in this hotel nearly 20 years ago before the tsunami. At that time it was The Sinbad. We loved Sri Lanka so much that we decided to return to SL and stayed in Ahungalla. Our rep. kindly arranged for us to go and revisit this hotel. We were warmly welcomed by the Manager and his staff, given a drink and refreshing towel and then a guided tour around the hotel. Whilst it has changed drastically since we were there it is still a wonderful location and even more beautiful hotel. A great place to relax if you are wanting a peaceful holiday. It is not far by Tuk Tuk from the very busy Kalutara if you want to experience the noise, sights and sounds of this wonderful country. Many thanks to our reps. Ananda and Richard for arranging the visit and for the lovely staff in the Avani for helping us relive our previous experience.
"Nice looking hotel but empty"
A group of us went to this hotel for a beach holiday. The hotel itself was nice to look at but it was seriously lacking in atmosphere. The staff were helpful but it felt like they were killing time as there were not many guests. There was a fantastic shop just outside called Clements Jewellers who did bespoke jewellery as well as the usual. Do not go to the ones recommended by the tuktuk drivers as they are overpriced. Clement gives the guests at the hotel a good deal. It is a shame but the hotel seemed a little dead and had no alternative entertainment when it rained.
"OK but lacking in atmosphere !"
A nice enough hotel - clean and relaxing, we were relocated here after our villa was overbooked. It is at the end of a long road next to a huge and fairly empty high-end hotel. The only restaurant within walking distance is The Red Lobster which was a welcome authentic and affordable dining option. The hotel itself was a fairly sanitised and atmosphere-less experience, you could have been anywhere in the world, although the staff were all very friendly.. The food in the hotel was decent, we also ate at the neighbouring hotel once, which was very expensive, but our favourite was the local restaurant (The red lobster) where the food was better than either of the hotels but ten times cheaper !
