Over Cinnamon Citadel

"Nice hotel but needs updated"
We spent five nights here in the middle of our Sri Lanka holiday. We had taken advantage of a free evening meal option when we booked online however there seemed to be some confusion over this, both when we checked in and then when we went to the restaurant on the first evening. Be careful and check your bill when you sign. First impressions here are very nice, a large open plan ground floor where reception leads into a lounge and bar area overlooking the swimming pool. Very clean and comfortable with waiting staff serving drinks and bar meals. The good impression doesn't really continue in the bedrooms unfortunately. They were probably very nice several years ago but are now very much ready for an update. The bathroom was particularly gloomy, all black tiling with grubby grout and a stale musty odour from the shower. We did ask for this to be looked at but it never really went away during our stay. This isn't a cheap hotel and the rooms should be much better for the price. The restaurant is buffet in the evening and this is the dining option included in the room rate. The food is fine, not spectacular but perfectly nice and lots of choice. The waiting staff however could really do with some training. They are lively people but three people to serve one tray of drinks surely is a bit much when other people are waiting. There is a choice of sitting inside or outside on the verandah which is very popular, however once again the staff all tend to go around in groups leaving lots of tables unattended. Slightly frustrating. On a much better note there is Cafe C. This is a restaurant next to the swimming pool which isn't included in the room rate but 20% discount is offered if you choose to eat here rather than the buffet. To be honest it is worth every penny. The chef and staff in Cafe C are on a different level completely. Polite, efficient service and the food is just superb. Well worth treating yourself, we are there twice and both times were excellent. The hotel has its own travel office with an advisor who will arrange pretty much anything to do with local attractions. We used him to book a driver for three of the days we were there. We were very pleased with this service, we got a really good driver for what we thought was a very fair price. It didn't feel like we were ripped off. For shorter journeys into Kandy city for instance, tuk tuks are readily available just outside the hotel. In summary this could be a top rated hotel in a great location but the rooms let it down a lot and the staff really do need some training. Then it might be worth the premium prices they charge.
"Amazing setting "
We were unfortunately only here for one night - however the setting of the pool with the backdrop of the river and landscape is second to none - food was OK in room service and the breakfast was a very good spread with seating on the balcony overlooking the river - I’d like to have stayed longer and would love to go back one day
I thought this was very much a transit hotel with most staying as they passed through. Many large groups were foing just that. Great pool. Dinner buffet was okay but nothing special. Breakfast similar but restaurant management weak, with many unrelated tables yet staff standing around and chatting. Room was a long way from reception with steps up and down. Best to check what you're being offered if this could be a problem for you. We found the
"Lovely pool after a long day!"
We travelled as a group of 8 family on a private tour around Sri Lanka and this was our second stop for one night whilst visiting the Temple of the Tooth. On arrival we were greeted by welcome drinks and a cool towel, the public areas of the hotel led to the bar and pool which overlooked the longest river in Sri Lanka, and the views were just stunning. The rooms we had were deluxe and were functional, the beds were large as was the room itself with everything you would need. Every hotel has complimentary water which is nice and we popped ours into the fridge each check in to make sure we had cold water for the next day.. toiletries were nice and the bathroom was very dark & could do with a makeover but it was only for one night so was fine. The hotel itself smelled of Cinnamon (as do the CInnamon chain) but we stayed in another Cinnamon which only smelled good in the toilets so this was a nice touch. We had time for a quick swim, and the pool attendant took towels over to some beds for us and we had an hour or so chilling out which was lovely as there was some kind of gathering under the canopy where the people were singing and playing instruments. After our visit to the Temple, where we saw the Poojah ceremony we headed back for dinner in the hotel. This was a buffet which had plenty of choice although at 8.30pm a lot of things were running low and staff were not around to re fill quickly so I had no brownies (boo)...the deserts and starters were in the fridge room. The experience was lovely. Staff were all attentive and we could not really fault the hotel, but we were only here for one night. Would recommend based on what we saw, I would say a lot of people stop here on tours so would be the same.
"Good view with restaurant"
This was a good hotel for a 2 night stay. The waiter in the a la carte restaurant was charming and the food was good. The buffet was fine too. The view of the river was lovely and the hotel was a good 4 star hotel, nothing exceptional but nothing wrong with it.
