"Fabulous place"

Fabulous location. Views out to sea are excellent and the hotel, set in a secluded bay and only reached by boat, is so peaceful. As you have to approach by boat, the boat service is included in the room rate and runs every hour on the half hour from the beach at Ao Nang.

"One of the best holidays we've ever taken!"

Staying at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas was quite possibly one of the best holiday related decisions we've ever made. Well worth the money! The service is well above what we expected & the resort itself is just amazing. There's no need to even leave the resort if you don't want to. There's plenty to keep you occupied. We definitely plan to be frequenting this property on an annual basis!

"Beautiful, at a cost"

My husband and I went here for our honeymoon in early October 2016. We had an overall amazing time - it was our honeymoon, after all. We really benefited from Tripadvisor reviews whilst trying to decide whether to book, so I hope this can help others too. Arrival - Upon arriving to the airport, we had a pre-booked cab to take us to the seafront, where we would get our boat to the island. Everyone was very helpful with our bags, and we made a point to tip the staff helping us on the boat with our luggage etc. as they worked directly for the resort. The boat ride was about 10-15 minutes long. It was quite rough on the sea as it's only a small boat, but it was never nauseating. The boat journey is beautiful. You pass a couple of islands, until you see the resort island - which we recognised instantly from obsessing over photos before we went, ha! Getting off the boat, you jump onto a floating pier. Now, this is somewhat a show of sorts, you will learn to know if you stay at the resort. The pier moves up and down with the waves, and this can be very comical trying to get across it for the first time. When you are on the resort, you can see the pier from many of the pool and bar spots, and you'll find that people stop to watch 'first timers' cross the pier. It's brilliant. After walking the pier a couple of times, though, it becomes a lot easier. The staff deal with all your luggage. (Picture of floating pier attached). On arrival to the island, we were greeted and shown around in the small group from our boat. We then checked in and were given a drink in the reception lobby. Which, by the way, is stunning. We were then shown to our room. Our Room - We had booked an Ocean View room with a Jacuzzi. When we arrived in our room (via golfbuggy, which was fun, and a good way to see the resort), we walked out onto the balcony to take in the view, to be greeted by trees. The view was completely covered by large trees and plants, making the room anything but Ocean View. After deciding we had paid more for this particular room to not get our moneys worth, my husband called reception and complained of the view. Immediately, they arranged for us to be moved to another room with a better view for later that day. Our luggage was all managed by staff, and we moved up to the top floor, and got the most spectacular view of the ocean and the island. We were so glad we had asked to move. (Picture attached of our view). Weather. - The weather in early October is still gorgeous. Don't get me wrong, it rained, probably for about 5 days in our 2 week visit. But even when it rains, the rain is warm. The resort faces the sea, so rainstorms are beautiful to watch, and if you're lucky you'll see an awesome lightning storm. You can also normally see the rain coming your way over the sea before it hits the resort, which is beneficial. We often jumped in the sea when it would rain, which was strangely romantic and fun. Get yourself a waterproof camera for this! We got some wicked pictures whilst it rained in the sea. Otherwise, it was beautiful weather. There were often clouds, but honestly, you'll be thankful for this. We got 'slots' of 20 minutes or so at a time where the sun would break through the clouds, then shade slightly again just in time to cool off. Don't get me wrong, we love being in the sun and love tanning etc., but it's impossible to enjoy a place if the sun is constantly beaming down, making even the ground too hot to walk on. Food & drink. - There are, I think, 4 different restaurants in the resort to choose from. We had a deal that was breakfast only, so had to pay for lunches & dinners. The breakfast is wonderful. There's such a large range of choice, from fresh fruit, to cereal, pastries, to freshly made pancakes & waffles (made right there as you take them), to curries and savoury meats. There's also a large selection of fruit juices. Even if you go toward the end of the breakfast time, there is always still plenty to go around. You might miss out on a few things like your favourite pastry, or a freshly made pancake, but generally, it's pretty well stocked. Lunch... We found that going to a restaurant for lunch every day was too much, both in money and in food intake. Instead, we got in the habit of eating at the pool-side bar, On The Rocks. They have their own bar menu, which turned out to be one of our favourite menus! For lunch, we often got the crisscut fries and a couple of beers. We still talk about how much we miss those fries (sad, I know). Dinner... We often found ourselves eating either in the Lotus Court restaurant, or at On The Rocks. On The Rocks is outside on the beach, with the tables on the sand. The food is easier, quicker and cheaper, but still very good quality. And they have a good cocktail menu. Travel Outside Resort - We regularly used the Monkey Trail to get to Ao Nang. The first time you take the monkey trail, if you are a normal person that doesn't go hiking for fun, you'll likely find this tiring!! The first couple of sets of stairs (pictured) are the steepest upwards going into Ao Nang. When you reach the top, it's fairly flat - the path made of bags of sand dug into the ground. Going down again into Ao Nang, the stairs are VERY steep downwards. This is clearly a man-made structure, literally made of odd planks of wood, bamboo and rope... But it is very sturdy and doesn't move/shake at all. Just be very careful if it is wet, as these become slippery due to the mud and moss on the wood. We often went through the Monkey Trail around 11am. We rarely saw monkeys at this time. On one day, when my husband had a sickness bug, I went through the Monkey Trail alone to retrieve beers from Ao Nang (because they're 1/4th of the price there compared to in the resort!)... I went around 2pm, and it was swarming with monkeys! this leads me to.... The Monkeys - The resort is on a national park, so wildlife is expected. We came across big lizards, beetles, a lot of beautiful butterflies, cool bugs, but most of all... monkeys. At first, it was SO exciting having monkeys literally chill with you on your balcony, or saunter past you by the pool. It really does make you feel you are somewhere exotic (which, hell, you are!). But, a warning tale... In every room, there's a sign warning to lock your balcony doors or they will sneak in and steal things. Well, one day, about half way through our holiday, we were having a rum on our balcony together when a crew of monkeys came by. (They seem to move in groups). The monkeys at this point were no longer a fascination but really quite a pest. One monkey sat on the table with my husband's cup of rum and began drinking it, so my husband flicked some rum at it to shoo it away... It retracted, then ran full pelt at us, hissing. (We look back at this now and laugh our heads off, but at the time I was squealing like a child). All whilst this was happening, another brave (and apparently very strong??) monkey had managed to OPEN OUR BALCONY DOOR, sneak into our room, open the mini fridge, and steal a bag of nuts!!! My husband chased the monkey around our room to get it out (like a Benny Hill scene)... and from then, we made sure we did lock them and not just close them shut. That wasn't the only time we had monkeys in our room either. LOCK THE BALCONY DOORS! Otherwise, the monkeys were annoying pests when around the pool if you have food. Even if you don't, they will sneak up while you nap and rummage through your bag for food. As soon as they see a staff member coming their way, they scamper! They must recognise the clothing of staff? The staff often shoo them away from people, which is helpful. Other - Our bed was very comfy. The shower and bathroom facilities were great... Really nice powerful showers. The Jacuzzi was well worth the extra money... watching the sunset with a drink in the jacuzzi... can't beat it. The staff were friendly, always happy to help. Alcohol is expensive in the resort. It's worth getting your own beers outside of the resort to take with you. They don't seem to have any problem with this. Our Departure - This, unfortunately, is where the decision of only 4 stars instead of 5 is made (along with a few other factors such as price etc.)... Upon arrival, we gave details for a credit card, so that any extra bills such as mini bar expenditure, or meals charged to our room, could be taken from said card. There was nothing said of having to settle this at a later date. Having card details taken obviously allows us to assume the money will be taken from the card. As we were literally ON THE BOAT, ready to leave, a staff member chased us up the pier and asked us to come to reception to settle a bill. We were assured the boat would wait for us, so we wouldn't miss our car transfer to the airport. Ha. We got to reception, and settled the bill.... which to us, didn't make sense in the first place. As my husband was talking to a staff member, I saw our boat leave. Having been assured the boat would wait for us, we were obviously not happy, as the next boat to depart the island was in 45 minutes, not giving us nearly enough time to be at the airport for check-in etc. Plus, we had missed our car transfer because of this. When we complained, we were told we could walk the Monkey Trail and they could arrange a car for us from the other end in Ao Nang. Keep in mind, we had our travelling clothes on, and walking the money trail meant getting VERY sweaty. We were very unhappy with this, considering 1. we had been told the boat would wait and 2. there was no mention of having to settle the bill at the end of our stay before departure. It felt like a crummy end. So please ensure you sort any bills before stepping onto the pier to prevent a mad (sweaty) rush to the airport! All in all, we had a beautiful honeymoon. I wouldn't visit again due to cost, and the fact that although it is beautiful there, it is just a resort.

"Not for us"

If you like the style of an all-inclusive resort, then this is for you. We prefer more freedom of options such as dining selections. The room was nice but the resort itself was crowded and noisy - even at the "tranquil" pool. Food was blah (truly horrible, mushy pizza) and drinks were watery. It was very nice to take the shuttle boat to the pier and get some wonderful "street food". But heads up on bringing anything back with you. The monkeys just know when you have groceries and the follow you to your room, they try really hard to pull your doors open, and act threateningly aggressive if they see you having a snack in your room.

"Stunning hotel, and one special mention."

The hotel is the most stunning view I have ever seen. A premium facilty in the middle of natural paradise. You even have monkeys around your room. Decent wifi all around the place. I want to do a special mention for a member of the staff named CHART, from the library desk. We had some minor problems with external tours and this man really helped us and fix everything doing a big effort. I hope he gets to be the manager one day! Thanks Centara. Wonderful place.
