"Another Amazing Visit"
Hats off once again to Leslie Prea and Tom Calame for another amazing trip to Aruba! We were at the property from Mach 14-17. Though this trip was shorter than our usual annual pilgrimage, we were still able to soak-up enough sun and fun to have memories for a lifetime. For those of you visiting Aruba for the first time, a few notes/reminders: There are places to stay and there are places to unwind. The Aruba Marriott Hotel and Stellaris Casino is a place to unwind and let go. There is little doubt in my mind that this hotel offers the best value for money on the island. Palapas (or tiki huts) on the beach are reserved by a reservation system and are not usually first-come-first serve so check with the hotel you go to for their policy. The restaurants in Aruba are absolutely stunning so please venture out and try new things (although Ruth’s Chris which is the upscale restaurant at the Marriott is a gem of a place on this island – see below). Finally, if you’re flying back to the USA you will be clearing US Customs in Aruba at Reina Beatrix airport (this is called preclearance). This means that when you arrive in the US you will walk off of your flight as if it were a domestic flight. What this means is that you have to arrive to the airport at least 3 hours early (4-5 hours on a Saturday) in order to clear the lines. You’ll have one line for check-in for your airline, another line for Aruba immigrations, another line for airport security, you will then claim your checked luggage and proceed through US Customs and Immigrations, you’ll get a second airport security check, and finally you can proceed to your gate. The reason I mention this is to take this into account when planning your trip back home as a 9am flight means a be-at-the-airport time of 6am, 4pm means 1pm, etc. Check-in: Thanks for Marriott’s Mobile Check-in the front desk staff knew that we would be arriving early. I arrived a few minutes before the time I had indicated so we had a short wait for our room which was not a problem at all. Kay expertly welcomed us to the property and expeditiously checked us in. Erna, May, and Beverly (who we usually see at check-in) weren’t there that morning but we did see them a few days later. It’s always wonderful to see these familiar faces from year to year. The Lobby: At first we were confused. Then slightly excited. The Lobby Café was gone and replaced by a Starbucks. To the side of the concierge where Hertz used to be (it’s still there just in a better location by the front entrance) is a new Gelato place. Hats off to Jareisha and Martha at Starbucks who not only remembered us but even remembered our orders day to day. My boys were sad to not have their Lobby Café egg and cheese paninis in the morning but were excited to have Starbucks and were thankful that there are a few local favorites still available there such as gouda pastechis. Having the Starbucks there with a more standardized menu seemed to streamline the ordering process. Food and coffee was flying off the counter much faster than in the days of the Lobby Café. One evening we reunited with Nora who used to be at Lobby Café but is now serving some of the most delicious Gelato that I’ve had outside of Italy at the new Gelato shop (try the Bacio d’ama and the Delice – my son took my cup of the two combined away from me…trust me on this one). We did not hit-up Ketsu for it’s awesome sushi this time but it’s at a more appropriate location next to the bar where there was usually live music every evening while we were there. The management has done an exquisite job of making the lobby a lively place in the evening; a place where a family can make countless memories. The Room: Our two double bed room with balcony and fantastic premium ocean view was exactly what our family needed for total relaxation. We all loved the bath products/toiletries, the in-room safe was adequate for our belongings, and the refrigerator was just the right size to keep the things we needed to keep cool. Housekeeping did a fantastic job with our requests and we had no issues at all with the room. The thing we love about this hotel is at peak times in the morning and the evening, to date, we have never had to take a cold shower. The same cannot be said for other properties that we have stayed at in Aruba. The Beach: Given a choice of pool or beach our family prefers beach. Hats off to all of the Towel Hut crew – especially Anali and John who took care of us and all of our needs. Anali’s dry humor and wit always kept me laughing and she does an excellent job of making order out of what can be a chaotic assignment. We didn’t see Ben this time but it would have been great to catch-up with him. Food and beverages were flowing thanks to Jorge and Corinne from Waves and all of the wait staff on the beach were fantastic. The Marriott part of Palm Beach is kept much cleaner and is much classier than the rest of the beach. The seaweed that washes-up daily is removed at dawn so when the fist beech bums emerge there is not unsightly seaweed strewn all over the beech. There is some seaweed in the water but I can’t complain about Mother Nature and her ways. Even the Ritz Carlton’s beach area next door looked like a boring college engineering lecture compared to the groovy vacation atmosphere at the Marriott beach. Again – if you go to the Marriott or another hotel, check with the hotel about procedures for reserving palapas. The pool is available and popular and there is a swim-up bar as well as poolside activities but with that amazing calm clear water and the beauty of the coastline I just can’t imagine spending time at the pool. That’s just me though. We had the requisite Aruba Arribas at Waves but everybody seemed to be ordering the Miami Vice which we will be sure to order next time. I prefer to concentrate on the local beer called Balashi. Ruth’s Chris: I believe this was our second year with Renato as our server. He was part of the original team when the hotel first opened in the 90’s. He is a class act and took care of us and made all of us feel very special. This Ruth’s Chris is not as pretentious as ones in the US. It is what I call upscale dining and upscale atmosphere where you can walk-in in casual wear. Fun fact – for $20 you can bring your favorite bottle of wine and have them uncork it if you can’t find something on their extensive list or you have something you’re saving for a special occasion. We all left this restaurant stuffed and happy. Overall: As you can see, we immensely enjoyed our trip. I cannot say enough about the hospitality that Leslie and Tom extended this trip as they have every trip by way of their excellent people. The thing that strikes me is the people who work here are lifers and it shows. Frank and Romeo, for example, remembered us and took excellent care of us every time we went through the door from check-in to check-out. We’ve lost track but we think that this was our 6th time to Aruba for my wife and I and the 5th time for our children. The thing is that we remember some of the staff from when we first started to come here when my wife and I came on our honeymoon in 2002…15 years ago! That is a testament to the organization that seems to invest-in and continually support good people who make their guests feel at home. We did not eat at La Vista this time but we ran into Lainey who is the manager there now whom we used to know from the towel hut. She took the time to say hello to us and ask us about our stay. Needless to say, my wife and children are already asked if I’ve booked the trip for next year.
"Wonderful easy trip. Will be back "
We were blown away by Aruba in general this place is so easy and relaxed. Take a 25 minute quick 15 minute cab ride from airport to the hotel and you literally don't need to go anywhere for your whole trip. We were happy to have been upgraded at check in as the room we reserved wasn't available. They also signed us up for their rewards program to avoid the internet fee. Once there You can walk the strip of the beach to lots of beach bars or the other hotels. The hotel itself has a casino as well as several places to eat and even a Starbucks. I recommend renting a pappala at the beach for 30 bucks a day so worth it. I would also recommend the adult pool for a day and renting a bungalow there. For 75 you get an extremely attentitive and friendly waiter for the entire day. They bring you bottled water and fruit and you get 50 dollars towards food and beverage which is easy to spend on lunch and happy hour. It's also very quiet and nice at the adult pool area more relaxing than the family pool area. Areas for improvement would be the rooms. I haven't stayed at a Marriott since I was younger but I think I'm general Marriott rooms are pretty basic and just a tiny pop of color or some decor would really bring them up to date. Also some variety in the food menus could be improved. Anywhere you get food outside or Room service it's all pretty much the same. Would be nice to have some variety. Lastly the hallways and rugs could use a cleaning and updating as well there was one area in particular on the first floor where we stayed that the rug seemed to have some significant water damage. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing. We totally enjoyed our stay and plan to come back in the fall but for a week this time. You can also pretty much find happy hour from 12-7 by just popping around the property to locate the next spot with a deal. Two for 15 during happy hour. Prices cannot be beat. Walking the strip we really felt Marriott was top of the list in terms of the property and amenities. The ritz next door is nice but Marriotts beach area is much prettier and the hotel itself is a lot more lively. You can grab cabs out to a nice dinner for 12 bucks each way. All around just so pleasant easy and enjoyable. Also you cannot beat this weather. Happy island indeed !
This hotel is located within walking distance of other hotels and restaurants! However you don't have to leave it! There is a bar in the lobby that has friendly knowledgeable bartenders. Sandra was especially nice. She makes great cocktails! There is also a bar menu that has tasty bites! There is also live entertainment. The beach is great - water is calm, huts are made available for shade. There is food and drink service there too. All of the comforts and pleasures you want for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation!! Highly recommend!
"4 days in the sun"
Checked Friday night late at the Tradewinds. In the morning the view from the balcony and the location of the room was probably one of our very best as far as i remember. We had breakfast lunch and dinner at the Tradewinds and everything was fresh with a nice variety for everyone. Perhaps some more local cuisine will be welcomed. At the beach getting an umbrella can be a challenge. Wake up at 6am, not an issue for me, and wait on a line until 7am to pick your site. This is the single reason that I have to think twice before returning to this property. Just build more sites. The water in front of the hotel and all the other hotels is not the best in the island. Has a beautiful turquoise color but is not very clean. With all the boats and no wave action at all the water is cloudy. The grounds and the pool of the hotel where well maintain and very clean. Overall a very nice property/location.
"Comfortable stay and beautiful views. "
Service, food and location set this place apart. Loved the pool and the beach. Room was very comfortable. Only downside was reserving a palapa. Required waiting around to get one and even then no guarantee. Couldn't even purchase because they sold out days in advance. Frustrating for shade seekers on the beach. Sunsets were insane. We will be back!!
