"Yes Please!!!"

   22-08-2017
Prior to arrival I requested a private driver as I did not want to hail a taxi at the airport who was not connected to Bougainvillea. We were met at the airport by our driver Julian who waited almost two hours due to flight delays from NY. Despite the long wait in hot weather Julian was most friendly, courteous and very professional. We utilized Julian as our driver for multiple trips to restaurants Tapas, Café Luna and Champers that all had outstanding food and ambiance. We also hired Julian for a 5-hour private tour and return ride to the airport. Julian has a wealth of information and knows Barbados inside and out. If you want a safe, reliable and professional driver Julian will be your go-to guy. Note: there are 9 taxi drivers affiliated with Bougainvillea. They park under the arch in the front of hotel. Taxi drivers not affiliated with the hotel (called “snatchers”) park in the street – proceed at your own peril as they can/will charge you higher prices than the Bougainvillea drivers who have contract rates with the hotel. Upon on arriving at Bougainvillea we were greeted in the lobby by the lovely Shakira with cold mango punch, banana bread and a very cold towel that we appreciated. Shakira was very friendly and helpful in answering our many questions. Stephen the Bellman was also very friendly and helpful. Note: there are no elevators so Bellman have to walk all luggage up multiple stairs (hint – make sure you TIP well). The concierge Shawna helped us quite a bit with various tour bookings, restaurant reservations and a tour of the property. Shawna was thorough, very professional and extremely patient. Seek her out for her knowledge and expertise. We dined at both property restaurants Lanterns and Siam where the food was fine (edge goes to Siam). Regan, the Asst. F&B Manager was great. Our go-to waitress was Nicole who was super friendly and had a very nice way about her. A tropical storm rolled through one night and the next day we were heading out to St. Lawrence Gap for breakfast as the storm had subsided. Little did we know that no one is allowed on the streets in Barbados until the “all clear” message is given by the proper authorities. Nicole informed us of this when she saw us leaving. Thanks Nicole! Roxanne at the pool-bar was wonderful, a pleasure to speak to and has a great personality. She has a very nice way with people and gave us some great recommendations (Hunte’s Garden was awesome). Sue at the front-desk in the evenings was just lovely. I checked out with Sue the night before we left with no issues. Very personable, thorough and a delight to speak to. Props to the security team as well who always seemed to be on-point. During the 7-days we were there I think we were approached on the beach maybe 3 times by locals selling stuff – not too bad. I was enjoying a cigar one evening and chatted up security guard Jason who was very informative and had a wealth of information on the history of Barbados. I told him he should be doing tours with all of the knowledge he has! We unfortunately did experience some issues while at Bougainvillea. I e-mailed the resort weeks in advance for a 3rd floor room. We were assigned to a 2nd floor room and when I inquired at the front desk I was told by Latina “that’s all they had available”. Now, I could see if we were in the middle of peak season maybe that would be the case but the resort was at very, very, VERY low capacity in August (place was pretty much empty). I think management could have easily accommodated my request for a higher floor upon check-in. I wasn’t asking for an upgrade just a higher floor with same layout. We had multiple issues in the 2nd floor room – sliding doors did not lock, air conditioner in bedroom leaked, the bathroom fan sounded like a loud truck. I made multiple requests for maintenance to assess and fix the bedroom AC unit. After returning from dinner on the 4th night my wife almost slipped and broker her neck as there was extensive water that leaked on to the bedroom floor. This pretty much got the attention of Management and we were moved the following day to a 3rd floor unit closer to the ocean. Maggie Rowe (Manager) was very pro-active in getting us a new room and she also provided us with vouchers for dinner at Siam restaurant that was comped. We thought this was fair and reasonable as it was a bit of an inconvenience to move rooms but we had no choice due to the AC issues. Housekeeping was hit or miss – some housekeepers are better than others. Monica was a stand-out housekeeper and super thorough in our new room. The stairwells to our room and landings were never swept or mopped so management should put this on the radar. We walked by literally hundreds of ants on the first-floor landing feeding on food for 3 days before it was cleaned up. A major renovation is currently underway on the west side of Bougainvillea. All rooms are getting updated/refreshed that apparently is long overdue. Bougainvillea needs to step it up a bit on the dated rooms décor/style if it wants to compete with nearby Sandals that are doing a $160 million expansion. Tiled bathroom counters went out 25 years ago – bring in some granite or even formica would be better than tile counters! I would recommend getting a room on the east-side (or original side away from main building) where it seemed to be quieter and breezier. Overall, despite a few hiccups we enjoyed our stay at the Bougainvillea. The Bajan people are lovely and the culture is super laid-back. The location is perfect and the views are stellar. We’ll give Bougainvillea another shot after the renovations are completed. Perhaps this time I’ll get a 3rd floor room straight-away as I’ll be a repeat customer!

"Beautiful setting"

   21-08-2017
Our family stayed for one week this August. Had a beautiful ocean front 2 bedroom 2.5 bath suite. Room was clean - grounds were beautiful. As far as restaurant choices, I did not care for the staff at the Lanterns restaurant and the food selection was average at best. The food itself was not good or worth the prices. Not the most cheerful staff and when we went to have dinner there one night we were asked if we had reservations. I said No. We looked around and there were plenty of open/empty tables. We were told to come back at 8:30 for open seating. We did not. I ordered room service around 9 - and we got a call back that they did not have the food I ordered. Never had dinner that night. We did try the Thai fusion restaurant and food was pretty good, staff friendly enough. They need more food choices on this property, as there are so many resort competitors on the island that offer many more choices to eat and entertainment. If you want to leave your hotel to eat you have to cab it. I recommend Tapas. Delicious and friendly staff. We did like the front desk staff, they were friendly and helpful when we needed anything. Not enough nightly entertainment and the Pool Bar pool was quite small and understaffed - but most of the bar tenders were friendly. The setting is so beautiful - I hope the updates/renovations that are currently underway improve the resort as overall it was very nice. I suggest packing some food in your suitcases for breakfast and lunches - grocery store was very expensive and another cab ride was required.

"Perfectly Quiet and relaxing "

"Nice hotel, lovely beach, but moody staff"

   18-08-2017
I stayed at Bouganvillea for 10 nights with my daughter in early to mid-August. We had a 1 bedroom suite which was nicely kept, spacious, and had a big balcony. The hotel sits right on the beautiful white sandy beach, with clear blue water. The evening entertainment was good, although it was not on every night. I had a long held impression that Caribbean islanders were laid back and super friendly. Sadly that whole image was crushed. The majority of staff at the hotel were very moody. I found the staff in the restaurant at breakfast particularly rude. One time my daughter was chastised for inadvertently sitting at a table before the lady had cleared it. Every day it felt as though they were irritated because we’d come to eat there, causing them to have work to do. Unfortunately there was nowhere nearby to have breakfast outside the hotel, so we had to put up with the moodiness every day. The exceptions in the restaurant were Donna and Kathy-Ann who were genuinely friendly. As far as food is concerned, the restaurant menu did not have enough variety or quality in my opinion, especially considering there are no other restaurants outside the hotel within walking distance. We did have a nice meal at the Siam Thai restaurant however, and the food served at the Barbados buffet night was tasty – the baked lamb in particular. At the pool bar again the staff were mostly in a permanent bad mood, and extremely slow with some complicated payment system. Apart from one guy who was from London – he was both friendly and efficient. I found the staff at reception much friendlier and more helpful, in particular Sue and Christopher. The guy who compared the entertainment (Regan I think) was also nice. The moodiness was apparent when we went outside the hotel too, so perhaps it’s just the Bajan way. But I a hotel should hire professional and friendly staff only in my opinion. I have travelled to exotic destinations all over the world, and never have I felt less welcome. There are places in Thailand, Mexico etc. that are just as beautiful but with friendly locals (and much cheaper), so I doubt I’ll go to Barbados again just to feel like I am an inconvenience.

"Back to the 50s in charm"

   10-08-2017
The setting is paradise, palm trees, white sand and blue sea. However the sea on the south can still get quite rough which meant we mainly used the pools. Maxwell beach is slightly cut off, there is a useful cut through at the end of the beach to get to Dover but only in the day time, we were advised to steer clear at night. The rooms are basic but serviceable, air con was great, and the kitchenette very useful. There is a travelling food car that pulls up outside the hotel at lunch time serving fabulous local meals for 20 Barbados. The whole feeling is old fashioned but charming.
