Hostal Valencia

Over Hostal Valencia

"Old world charm with poor service and conditions."

The hotel is rated as 3 star, 1.5 would be a generous estimate. We stayed here at the beginning and end of outer Cuba trip, on two different rooms, Silla and Alicante. One at the side of the hotel and the other at the front. If you want to sleep do not get a room at the front, it is on a very popular walking street and folks are still using it at 3am. Due to its age the hotel does not have glass in the balcony doors just Louvre's so any street noise comes straight in. I It’s very quaint and old Havana’ish, built around a central courtyard with lots of plants growing both upwards and downwards. Lovely position ideal for walking around the old town. The pleasant young man who took out bags to our room, told us that refurbishment was underway. Both our rooms on the first floor were certainly in need of a bit of tlc, but I suppose it added to the rustic charm. The air con sounded like a gas turbine for the first 20 minutes or so until settling into a background rumble, but it worked and thankfully the evening temp was low enough to allow it to be turned off. But it's the electrics where things were a bit worrying, lights and sockets hanging off the walls, wires protruding from various fixtures and fittings, I speak as a retired electrical engineer, it was not impressive. We had done our research before we came so we knew what to expect, or thought we did, and the rooms were big nice and clean and looked clean but the floors felt gritty, like they needed a good wash. The staff, oh dear, when we first arrived the gentleman on the desk, Mike, was very welcoming and friendly. But next morning with a change of shift the lady on the desk was the exact opposite. And as for the waiter who”welcomed” us for breakfast NOT, what a miserable unwelcoming gent he was. We read the menu, which was quite comprehensive, and both settled on tortilla ( omelette ) only to be told by the waiter, “we haven't got any, you can have cheese and ham” . “That's easy then” said my wife , “ cheese and ham please”, oddly enough we were then served with cheese and ham omelette? Maybe the chicken had started laying again who knows. Overall, we had done our homework so we had a good idea what to expect, just a shame the hotel staff were so grumpy and unpleasant.

"Our favorite hotel in Cuba"

Best location in Havana vieja, within short walking distance to most attractions Havana vieja has to offer and yet in a quiet and pleasant location. Charming colonial building arranged around a central patio which accommodates a nice restaurant. The hotel is tastefully renovated, not to perfection , reserving all past character and charm. High ceiling, painted walls, lovely patio etc. We got a courtesy upgrade to a lovely suit after the reception noticed that it was my wife's birthday and a little celebration later at the restaurant which were lovely surprises. Thanks and thanks to the charming staff. Wish we could have stayed longer.

"Quiet, Cozy and Fresh Little Restaurant."

Nice place, centric for a little break while in Old Havana. Building, decorations are the most attractive in the place. Breeze that runs is like water in the dessert. Paella (I bought the one which won prizes according to them) is fair but not a great deal. Prices are high compared to the Cuban private sector...

"Delicious Paella"

We stopped here for a beer to get out of the heat. Tried the lobster paella, was delicious. Nice clean restaurant, service was good. They had a small band playing, bit loud but music was great. Lovely setting.

"The only saving grace is the location, and Daniel at the front desk!"

We wanted to try all kinds of accommodation on our trip to Cuba, including Hotels, casa and the government run Hostals. Since it was only 20 CUC cheaper per day than the Iberostar, and based on the Lonely Planet review we considered Hostal Valencia a safe bet. We were wrong! We were shown to our very strange 'suite' through a courtyard into an adjoining hotel, where the rooms were musty, grimy and smelt of fresh paint. When I asked to see a room in the actual Hostal Valencia that we had booked for, we were taken back through the courtyard into a room that smelt as if it had been unoccupied for months... There was a large pool of water on the floor from rain leaking in through the ceiling. We resigned ourselves to sticking it out in the room with the freshly painted blue doors! A metal trolley filled with waste stood outside our door for the duration of our thankfully short visit. We found the hotel depressing. It was empty, and lacked the energy and atmosphere of Havana Vieja. We were the only guests in the breakfast room save for another couple who looked similarly unimpressed. The food was spartan and unappetising. If you are unlucky enough to end up here, look for Daniel at reception. This obliging young man has a great sense of humour, loves his job and will do what he can to help in any way he can.
