Over Plaza Hotel

Stayed here as part of a walking group. Supposed to be in another hotel but were bounced into this one by our tour operator or Havana tourism. Either way we got the poor end of the deal. Front desk staff uninterested in their customers. Other staff were helpful such as in the breakfast room. Even there they struggled with the numbers of guests. Rooms were in dirty and dangerous condition with electrical wiring hanging out of sockets and walls. Window in bathroom hanging on one hinge . Broken tiles in Bathroom. Shower curtain very dirty or marked from years of use. No point in changing rooms as most were in similar condition according to others in our group. If you find yourself here and your rep wants you to stay here I suggest you check room they allocate and if its not any different than described then demand to be moved to another hotel. A B&B in Trinidad we stayed in was 10 star compared to this old girl. They are starting to do it up but its a long way to go .
"Was probably once a grand hotel"
On a trip to Cuba this month the hotel (Sevilla) which our holiday company booked us into overbooked and we were sent to the Hotel Plaza. The lobby suggested that it had been a grand hotel but the rooms showed that it had been allowed to deteriorate. Mould, dangerous electrics, faulty equipment and cold/broken showers were the norm it seemed. We had to spend 4 nights of a 2 week trip here so are looking for refunds. The one thing in it's favour - and this was 5* was the breakfast!
"thank goodness we dod'nt stay here"
we used the facilities of the hotel for a shower (joke - as there was only a trickle of water) and change before we went on to the Tropicana (that's another story as we were badly let down by the rep.) The room had three lights, a bedside lamp, a light in the bathroom and the best one was in the wardrobe!. the room had large damp patches and the electrics were in a precarious state. I can imagine when new that this might have been quite an elegant hotel but time has taken it's toll. The mojito however was excellent!
"Good Location, basic facility"
As stated in other reviews, this is an old hotel, with some charming architectural features. It does, however, need some TLC. I stayed here on two different occasions. Both times, the room was very clean. Shower function is unpredictable--at times a good flow of hot water, at others, no hot water, at other times, just slightly more than a dribble. There is a mini-bar, a hair dryer that worked well, and toiletries. Electrical outlets are few. The flat screen TV worked well, had a good selection of channels , several in English. The bed was not plush, but was comfortable. The breakfast buffet is plentiful, with a good selection of pastries, fruits, cereals, omelettes made to order and juices. The coffee machines give mediocre coffee when they are working. The terrace offers a nice view out over the city. The hotel is conveniently located near the Parque Central, and a short walk to the Old City. This is certainly not a luxury hotel, but I found it comfortable, and adequate. So much maintenance has simply not been possible to the hard-working Cubans, due to shortages caused by the embargo. In contrast to comments in other reviews, I found the staff to be helpful and friendly, even when they were over-whelmed with large groups checking in or out. The desk is also able to change money to Cuban CUC's.
"more poor and rundown than romantic"
Hotel of old glamour- definitely before revolution. No renovation since. Incredible loud rooms to the princcipal road with tons of cuban trucks and buses and and.... Sometimes no water at all in the room, sometimes no hot water. Not enough dish in the breakfast room for the tons of package tourists which are placed there by their companies. Run down- in a cheap backpacker level. but not for absurd prices in CUC (the hard currency)
