Over Plaza Hotel

"Old Havana "
An old hotel in need of some TLC. Right off of the Central Park the location is very good, the rooms clean and staff friendly and courteous. We did run out of water one morning but this was rectified before noon. Breakfast is included with your stay and the food is okay. The dinning area is on the rooftop offering great views up to the ocean. They do however need more dishes or dishwashers as they ran out every morning. Great location and acceptable accommodations. Nice staff.
"Only reason to give any stars is the location"
First - the location is fantastic! Perfect for sightseeing and restaurants. Now on to the rest: 1) the staff are incompetent and outright rude 2) we had no hot water for the majority of our stay 3) any cold water we did have for a shower only dribbled out of the shower i.e. useless for a shower 4) dirty - hairs in the bathroom and in the bed, dust everywhere and dirty towels etc 5) breakfast is unappetizing and the same everyday, with long queues for the semi-edible omlettes If you are purely there for location it is fine, but don't expect any comfort.
"Old Charme, Horrid staff"
This beautiful hotel has clearly seen better days. The charm of old is still felt in its interior. It is a bit run down though. Rooms are rather basic/ Sparta Nic in their fittings and furnishings but functional. Hot water did not work. Staff (except the bar staff and the musicians who want tips) are uncharacteristically unfriendly. Check in and checkout was torture despite everything having been prepaid and cash only policy in hotel each took half an hour of interaction with a. Very disgruntled staff. Staff at breakfast also gave the impression of rather not wanting to be there. Cannot really recommend.
"The rooftop bar is a hidden gem"
We just went for a roof-top bar, and we got it. Fabolous view over Havana, sthe sun was setting, and we havd fine mojitos from the very friendly staff. We were the only ones, apparently because it was slightly out of season. We did not care. We just enjoyed this fine gem
"Outdated, not very clean, no hot water"
We stayed here for three nights for the start of our trip around Cuba. Considering that it’s a Cuban hotel, we didn’t expect a European 4* standard when we made the booking. However, we were still disappointed with this hotel and found it extremely overpriced for what you get - see details of our experience below. Check-In: When we arrived around 6pm, the rooms weren’t ready (despite the check-in time of 4pm). The staff at the reception apologised and we waited in the lobby bar for one hour. We even had to pay something for storing our luggage while we waited for the room to be ready. Only after asking again at the reception one hour later, we were assigned to our room. Room: The size was okay, on the second floor, facing the courtyard, with a very high ceiling and quite dark. The furniture was old and worn (right from the 60ies), but that’s to be expected in Cuba. The room was not very clean. The bed was comfortable. We had a safe and an empty fridge but no minibar. On the third day, a minibar appeared in our room after the housekeeping had made the room. The room was noisy at night - you could hear the music from the bar below and from the breakfast in the morning, but I guess Havanna is a city full of music and noise in general. The air-condition worked well. Bathroom: The bathroom was also a decent size but again, not very clean. There was no hot water in the shower on any of the days that we were there!!! Plus, on the first day, the sink in the bathroom was clogged and the water didn’t run off. However, this was fixed the next day. Location: The location of the hotel is great, it’s only a 5min walk to the old town and the Capitol and a 10min walk to the Malecon. The view from the breakfast terrace is amazing - you can see the Barcadi Building, the Museo de la Revoluction and the sea. Lobby & Bar: The lobby has a nice atmosphere with comfy chairs and couches. The mojitos at the bar are good, not expensive and the bartender was nice. Breakfast: Breakfast was good with live music and an amazing view from the terrace. There was a big selection of tropical fruits, cheeses, sausages, English breakfast, bread and pastries. They even have an omelette station where you can get a freshly made omelette. However, cleanliness at breakfast was also not great. Staff: The staff at breakfast and at the hotel bar were friendly. The housekeeping was better on the second and third night; I had the feeling that our room just wasn’t cleaned well before we checked in. The front office staff seemed bored and uninterested and only one or two of the staff spoke English well. Whenever we asked to change money or when we asked for wifi cards, we just got the answer that they ran out of whatever we needed, however, that’s normal in Cuba. They gave us directions to another hotel (Hotel Inglaterra, diagonally across the park), where we could change money. Overall: Despite the central location and its rich history, I can’t recommend this hotel. My advice is to stay at a privately owned “casa†instead - they are much cheaper and cleaner than the hotels in Cuba and you get to meet the local people.
