Over Plaza Hotel

"Quirky place for a cool beer"
We stopped at this hotel 10 years ago, and had a fab time. As we were in Havana as one of our cruise stops, we , we decided to call in a have a drink. It hadn't changed a bit, staff were really. Ice, the beer was cool, Nd still only
"Hotel Plaza- three days in Old Havana"
We were in Old Havana from January 28th to January 31, 2017. We arrived late at the hotel and were served right away by the front desk person. When we arrived to our room, I noticed how small it was (very unlike rooms at resorts), but it was clean, and the bed was comfy. When the hair blower and security box wasn't working, it was fixed right away. The food (breakfast was complementary) was good, and the restaurant staff were very pleasant. We didn't ask a lot of questions to the front desk person (their English was the best), but did have a great conversation with our Transat Rep, who provided us with a lot of details and suggestions. We did however ask the door man to get us a taxi, the evening we wanted to visit the Old Fort. The price of this taxi was slightly higher than usual. We found out afterwards that it's best to find your own taxis and to negotiate the price yourself. The hotel room, may not have been the nicest- it's an old hotel but it has a great lobby and lobby bar with wonderful service. We spent our nights in our room after touring Old Havana, so didn’t spend a lot of time there. I thought it was good enough for that purpose. Location was great and we walked every where we wanted (except to the Old Fort, of course) cause you have to get a taxi for that. Ok, so it's run down, and some things aren't working properly, but you can't beat it for the location.
"Depends on One's Expectations"
One has to appreciate the facilities & conditions of this hotel within the context of Havana & Cuba; if you're expecting first world quality & standards, forget it. However, if you want conveniently located, clean and adequate accommodation with a breakfast provision that's more than adequate, with a bit of historic charm thrown in, this hotel is just fine. Staff were helpful & friendly, & one can walk into the historic centre of Havana from the front door. Ok, so the water system is a bit erratic, but it was so hot when I visited I only wanted a cold shower. This place is just fine....unless you expect the impossible.
"Stay somewhere else!"
We had a reservation here, and left after 2 nights. Some in our group had bugs in their rooms, my room had no light in the bathroom, things were broken, the sheets were uncomfortable and thin. The staff at reception were very nice, and tried to be helpful. The only nice part of the hotel was the lobby--it had a kind of run-down but beautiful look, so go for a coffee only.
"Avoid at all costs"
Reception area was very nice but that was where it ended. We arrived approx 9pm after a long flight. Were informed which room and left to get on with it. On entering the room the smell of must and damp was awful. Windows were boarded up with plaster board so no light, doors were dirty, tiles badly broken, shower looked that dirty I could not even stand in it to shower, sink taps were falling off. We asked to be moved but were told no rooms free until the following day. The next room was not much better. One pane of glass was broken so only half a window, other windows were boarded up with cardboard and the third window was a shutter that could not be opened so noise coming in day and night. We arrived at breakfast early, just to get out of the room but the cold (supposed to be hot) food was virtually all gone and not replaced, the coffee machine only gave out hot milk, coffee non existent so only real selection was bread and oranges. Luckily we were only there for 3 nights and that was too long. If we had paid £25 a night at a hostel I would have expected this standard not £200 a night. Worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Avoid at all costs.
