"A Nice Resort, No Major Concerns"
I stayed here last week with two friends who had never been to Cuba before. We are all between 50 and 75 years old and stayed on the concerege level. I stayed one week, my friend stayed two. Great things about the resort are the cleanliness of the common areas, beach and grounds. The food is good compared to most places in Cuba. I did not use extra spices etc to flavor things. Buffet and al a Carte's were good too. You won't starve and there are lots of Cuban choices of foods. Lots of fresh fish and prawns. Pools (2) fair sized, are clean and warm as is the beach and ocean. The entertainment team is fantastic, probably the best I've seen in about 30 different resort visits. Great shows with lots of variety and talent. The staff are polite, friendly and hard working. What could be improved is: adding poolside bar service. No one comes around to offer or serve drinks. Internet service in the rooms should be added. There is only internet in the lobby area at a cost and as usual for Cuba, is difficult to use without loosing the signal frequently. Cleanliness in the actual hotel rooms could be better. Don't look up through the the air conditioning vents, you will get kind of grossed out. Also, as in all tropical destinations the rooms can get that musty smell if you don't leave your patio doors open for a few hours a day. Take a room freshener or candle with you and this will solve the problem too. Last thing is the bank exchange booth charges a service fee of 3 % of the amount you are exchanging, so be aware of this. It is not advertised anywhere. If you don't want to pay the service charge it would be better to use an actual bank or exchange currency at the airport before you arrive. Would I stay here again? Yes, if the price was right.
"Lovely property with good service!"
My husband and I just got back from a week at this resort. It was our first time in Cuba. We found that most of the guests at the resort were from Canada. First off I have to say that we fell in love with the Cuban people...in our opinion, nicer than Mexico or anywhere else in the Caribbean...both in Havana and at the resort. They are genuine, kind, helpful and very hard working. The service is fantastic throughout the resort, from the servers to the maids to the groundskeepers (one person has taught himself English, French and German to be able to interact with guests!). When we left, we were hugging goodbye to employees that we had come to know and like. So.....overall the property is very nice but it really needs upgrading...it is tired. But from talking with guests from other resorts, it seems that this is common for most properties there. Landscaping is very nice and very lush. Rooms - We were in a bungalow Super Saver room. Room is large with a king bed and a small sunken area with couch - nothing special but fine and very clean. There is a small bathroom (toilet, bidet, very narrow bath) with an outside area which has a vanity with a sink. Mattresses sorely need to be upgraded. They are very hard and uncomfortable. The pillows are flimsy and flat...even with two. So we didn't sleep very well. People will forgive almost anything if they have good mattresses and pillows thus good sleep. The bungalow units are on either side of the pool and closer to the beach so super convenient for the back and forths. Food - Main restaurant is buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nothing special. It is the same every day and we found it monotonous but there is lots of choice and you won't starve. We tried all three of the 'a la carte' restaurants - the Italian restaurant (dinner only) has mediocre food but the service is nice and the musicians (a young man and young lady playing classical music) are worth the visit just to to hear them. The 'Romantic' restaurant (dinner only) also has mediocre food but like the Italian, it has good service and good music. The third restaurant (lunch, dinner, snacks all day) is near the pool area....better food (hit and miss) and good service...no music. Pool - nice, lots of chairs, areas for shade or sun but the water temperature was really cold so not many people were swimming. This may simply be because the weather had been cold and the pool is probably heated by the sun only. The ocean water was warmer. Beach - unlike some resorts, there is a little walk to the beach. It is clean with lots of chairs. There are no bathrooms so you have to go back to the pool area. There is a bar halfway between the pool and the beach for drinks. Entertainment - this is weather dependent so nothing if there is rain but otherwise there are shows with singers, dancers, music, etc. Nothing special but fine. They try hard. Day trip - we bought the day trip to Havana on the plane. It is the same price as onsite but on the plane you pay with Canadian dollars rather than US dollars and with a credit card which was great. So, we left early, it takes about 1.5 hours + a stop halfway for the obligatory and touristy Pina Colada and souvenir sellers. We visited the old and new city with lunch and a museum visit included. The tour guide "Yuri" was really great, providing so much information on the rich history of Cuba and the current day to day life. He alone was worth the price of the tour. I'm so glad we saw Havana, even for so short a time. We would love to spend more time there and will probably do so without going to a resort. Varadero - nothing to see in town....waste of time.....street full of souvenir sellers. We ended up spending more time on the 'hop on hop off' bus which picks up at every hotel and was long and boring. If you want little souvenirs, there are souvenir sellers in the hotel lobby every day that sell the same things as in town and they are no more expensive. So....would we go back to Cuba.....absolutely. Would we go back to the resort....no ...but only because we would go try other areas within Cuba. If you are looking for a well priced vacation at a reasonably nice resort with lots of food, good drinks and amazing service and can overlook that it needs some work then this is a good spot. We had a good time!

"some what disapointing"
trip jan 6 to 13 we found the hotel rundown with broken windows and floor tiles.Looks like maintenance does not exist .our room was clean and the maid was very nice as was a few people in the buffet The rest of the staff were not happy people and serving you was a big chore. The food was good and lots of choice with some thing new every day.The ladies making breakfast juice were great and got us to try different drinks. The lobby bar had one girl that was trying real hard to make you what ever you wanted and was really out going and friendly, some of the others did not actually care if you were there or not, and would not even say thanks or acknowledge a tip,so we got so we only tipped those who actually earned it. This is the first resort that we ever not tipped every on who served us.We took the sugar, rum and cigar tour it was good and well worth the$$$. Tom From B.C. Canada
"Beautiful grounds and landscaping but there were problems....."
Arrived December 30 and taken directly to our room by concierge after a speedy check in. This was my first time in Cuba. Stayed in building 64 second floor. Room was quite spacious with king bed and living room area. Fridge not cold but stocked with a few soda and one beer. You need to use room key or similar to have air conditioning and lights to work. Bathroom had toilet and bidet. Tub was narrow and there was definitely mold on the ceiling. Pool area very nice and could always get a lounger. There were some pool activities throughout the day. Bar was open 10 am to midnight. Beach was very clean and if you wanted a lounge chair you needed to be there early. There was an attendant who would get you some chairs and place them where you wanted. There was no washroom on the beach and you needed to walk back to pool area. There was no bar on the beach but you could get a drink at a bar between the beach and pool area. At this bar area, they would barbecue burgers and kebobs at lunch time. The buffet was definitely hit and miss. Food temperature was inconsistent. Scrambled eggs and bacon were not cooked to my liking: as far as I was concerned they were well under cooked. Service for coffee, tea and other beverages was inconsistent as well. At dinner time they had a barbecue on the patio off of the buffet. You could get chicken, beef, liver, ribs, etc here. It seemed that the raw food was not kept on ice or refrigerated. A la carte restaurants were significantly better. Unfortunately I got ill with a stomach bug; not sure it it was the food or I picked up a virus.
