"1st time to Cuba"
To start Roberto at El Mojito bar was absolutely amazing, makes the best mojito and always a friendly smile!! Always remembered what you wanted. Food was ok but not much for variety each day. The grill was very good, cooked over an open flame and seasoned with lots to choose from but just make sure the chicken is cooked thoroughly. We were served raw chicken twice. The entertainment team was really good, make sure to check out the acrobatic aquatic show. Mickey Mouse ciao ciao kept things fun and lively. The staff are helpful and the groundskeepers were very friendly and would stop and chat for a few minutes to see how your stay was going. $5 CUC to ride the double decker bus to see Varadero is well worth it as you can hop on hop off. Italian restaurant at the Las Americas mall was delicious, $20 for a couple of chicken parmigiana meals and 3 beers. The Beatles bar was very entertaining, live band day and night. Day band was better than the night band. $20 snorkeling at the resort was good, took a sailboat out and snorkeled for an hour. The resort supplies equipment but we travel with our own set. It was supposed to be a 20 minute boat ride but there was no wind so it took a bit longer, just paddled through the calm waters, the sun was shining and the turquoise water was crystal clear so we didn’t mind at all. We didn’t have a problem getting a chair at the pool or beach but we were out there around 7-8am. The paddle boat and kayaks were always accessible, weather permitting. Definitely worth a walk in both directions along the beach to see the views and take in the sunset from the rocks. There were no bugs day or night so there was no need for bug spray even though we packed some. Now the bad stuff! We checked out of our room at noon and wanted to go into varadero for the day as we weren’t picked up for hotel transfer until 11:15 pm. We were reassured that we would have no problem coming back onto the resort by the front desk staff and the girl at the the security gate but there was a shift change and the new security was NOT going to let us back on the resort. There was a language barrier as we only spoke a little Spanish and she spoke a little English. She finally let us go but we were to the point of arguing with her as our luggage and passports were in the resort. So DO NOT let them cut wristbands if you are leaving for the day! I would definitely go back to this resort for the friendly staff, especially Roberto! Varadero was very nice and the vendors were not pushy at all like at other Caribbean countries we have visited. We walked around day and night and felt very safe being off the resort. Definitely worth visiting!
"Enjoyable stay at the Las Antillas!"
We stayed here with friends from January 5-12. We have stayed in 6 different hotels in Varadero. This is our first stay the Melia Las Antillas. Rooms- We booked an ocean view room which was on the 4th floor the main building. Oceanview rooms come with concierge services, which include additional amenities in the room, access to a VIP lounge with snacks and alcohol and additional al a carte booking. The room was clean and basic but very large with an additional seating area. The balcony was beautiful, overlooking the grounds and the ocean. The king bed was ok, better than most beds I’ve had in Cuba. Food- Some of the best we’ve had in Cuba. The selection was great, and we never had a problem with undercooked food and/or food that was too cold in the buffet. The staff in the restaurant are the friendliest at the resort and are quick to get to know you. We always sat in the section hosted by Alane and Javier (I think was his name). They were so great! The lunch menu at the pool bar restaurant was extensive and the things we tried were fresh and delicious. The burgers at the ocean bar are also delicious! We tried one al a carte, the don peperone and didn’t enjoy it all and the service was extremely slow. Staff- All the staff I dealt with were friendly and accommodating. We had an issue with our room which when reported was resolved right away. The staff in the concierge room, the buffet and the pool bar were the best! Beach- As usual the beach in Varadero is incredible. Sand and blue ocean for days! The beach was very clean and plenty of chairs and palapas to be had. The amenities were great, snorkeling equipment, peddle boats and catamarans rides are available. Location- this hotel is pretty much mid-peninsula, it is a short walk to get on the double decker bus to take you into town. Entertainment- There was some sort of show every night, we only checked out a couple which were standard hotel shows. There was beach and pool side entertainment on the days with nice weather. The live music every night in the lobby was nice and very good quality. There was a very small disco on the resort as well. Excursions- We did two through sun wing. We did the sugar, rum and cigar tour and a fishing excursion. The sugar, rum and cigar tour involved a tour of an old sugar plantation and a train ride through the country side. We stopped in the city of Cardenas for lunch. We then went into Varadero to the new marina to a coffee shop to see someone make cigars and then went into the town of Varadero to a rum store. The first half (sugar, train and city lunch) was great and very authentic. The last two stops were traditional tourist traps with not a lot of history or information. Fishing- this excursion was great. We went as a group of 4 and had one guide and the captain of the boat. They were so accommodating, welcoming and friendly. The boat was beautiful and in great shape. We spent 5 hours fishing in the ocean, caught 2 fish and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It is a more expensive excursion but worth it in my opinion. Overall impression- Yes, the hotel is older and showing its age. They still only have one working set of elevators which isn’t a big deal unless stairs are an issue for you. There are some minor issues that should be fixed for safety, when it rains the light fixtures leak in the bathroom and the railings in the mail building are a bit loose. However, with all that said if you are looking for an affordable, clean and friendly place to stay I would recommend the Melia Las Antillas. It was some of the best food we’ve had in Cuba and the staff were incredibly friendly. The vibe at the resort is relaxing and we really enjoyed our stay. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
"People make the difference"
My spouse and I stayed for 10 nights Dec 26 to Jan 5. We upgraded to the 5th floor concierge service - well worth it. The rooms were clean and comfortable with an ocean view and balcony, where we enjoyed our coffee each morning. The staff have worked very hard to recover from the recent hurricane and it shows! They should be proud of their accomplishment. While the main elevator is not in service yet - service to the 4th and 5th floors is back working. This was the only real scar left from the storm that I noticed - so you may want to check the status if you have mobility issues. Our concierge Elizabeth was very nice, and special thank you to Meylin who booked a manicure and massage for me. They were attentive and always had great coffee and snacks for us. This adults only resort had the right mix of available activities, entertainment, restaurants and of course one of the best beaches I have ever seen. I have forgotten the name of my favourite bartender at the pool side bar (always a friendly greeting). She and George Lewis Del Forn (Beach Bar) were always there to make a suggestion, and added to our enjoyment. While the resort is nice, it is the people who work there who truly make it a memorable vacation. From the moment we first stepped foot through the door, we were greeted with a glass of champagne and juice and escorted to our room. There are too many to mention - but - Maria and Niurka of the entertainment committee found their way into our hearts forever. So much so, I hope to return again (Dec/Jan this year). I found this resort to be of great value, with amazing staff, and hope to see them all again. Muchas Gracias Carolina & Marco from Canada
"Wow! Really worth the money"
I just got back from this hotel and thought I should warn people about the state of this place. Ok the beach is fantastic, close to a golf course by taxi, the grounds and pool are fine. What really worries me is the state of the rooms.... no luxury here! The place really needs some serious maintenance... the lobby is old... furniture is dirty... and service is minimal. Asking for anything is complicated and slow responses is the norm, not to mention the exasperated help at the front desk. Just take a look at the pics here... all taken in our room! I do not recommend this place, save your money or go to a better place. PS. The food was ok but the same at lunch and dinner.... day after day.... the A La Carte were decent but barely.
We spent two weeks across Christmas and New Year, and had the most wonderful time. The staff at the resort really made the trip, they were all so attentive and friendly. Particularly Yudith and Jose at El Conuco who made each visit so personal. The resort itself is very beautiful. We loved it so much we will be returning in April!
