"Good value - Super beach and Staff"
Melia Las Antillas August 30 – September 9, 2017 Let me start this review by saying we were lucky enough to have left Saturday Sept 9th before any of the hurricane caused any damage. My review is based on the days our family was there prior to Irma. We arrived on Wednesday August 30th. There were 4 of us on this trip. We reserved 2 rooms on the 5th floor, concierge service. The flight was uneventful, Sunwing was on time and the bus ride seemed quick and fast, no delays at the airport. For some reason it seemed like a lot of people got off at Las Antillas so there was a lot of confusion at front desk. I was lead to believe that there was a special line for people taking our package but was told no. One of the 2 rooms was ready at our time of arrival 1:00PM so after unloading our stuff in the other room we went to meet Margaret one of the ladies that takes care of the guests at the Concierge Service on the 5th floor the other is Marlyn, both are very helpful, kind and caring. They took care of all our a la cartes and answered any questions we had. If we needed something extra in the room it was there later in the day. Looking back we liked the added perks that came with reserving the 5th floor and the Concierge Service. Our room was clean, everything worked and we felt at home. Our fridge was always full and we had a few gifts waiting in our room. The other room had a few issues with the water temperature in the shower and toilet. The beach is beautiful at this resort you could walk for miles and there was never any seaweed, except for on the last day due to most services on the beach being closed due to Irma. During our stay we could always find a couple chairs under a palapa and the ocean never seemed crowded. The hotel is well laid out. All 4 of us felt at home very quickly and started getting into the vacation spirit of things. The first day we arrived was Cuban day, again a nice way to start of the holidays. We went to all the al cartes Romantico to us was the best, we went there twice during our time. We had made reservations at the El Ranchon but ended up leaving as it took over an hour to get served, we were also told that they ran out of wine which didn’t make sense, a bit disappointing so we ended up going to the buffet. The buffets food was good, always found something to eat. My hint would be to show up early as some of the dishes are not replaced so you can end up missing some of the better dishes. At night we spend most of the time at the terrace having a few drinks and relaxing. There were a few different bands which were quite good. We did see one night show that was mostly dancing. We went to Beatles in town one night and had a great time. We did the Jeep adventure tour and we would highly recommend this for anyone who wants to do a few things while getting an opportunity to see the real Cuba and the small towns. The tour includes driving your jeep all day, snorkeling, swimming in a cave and a trip to a farm for lunch. Our tour guide was Santiago he was very knowledgeable along with planning our day so we never met up with other groups, this was important to make sure our day was very enjoyable and not over crowded. We took the $5 CUC bus and went all over the area stopping at the marina and downtown Varadero to take in the sights. We also did the catamaran tour available at the hotel beach for $20 CUC per person to snorkel and $10 CUC if you just went on the same trip but didn’t snorkel. Tons of fish to see and feed, well worth the money. We would like to thank the people at the hotel for making our trip very enjoyable and memorable. Margaret, Marilyn, Raul our maid are a few other people that stand out. There is a lady at lunch at the Ranchon named Estella avoid her at all costs she should not be serving at this restaurant or at this hotel we happened to have her serve us twice and both times she left us feeling like how could this person be working at an establishment that has such good people. Our family really enjoyed our stay at the Melia Las Antillas and would recommend it to anyone wanting a hotel with good food, clean rooms, a great beach, caring staff except for Estella as I pointed out before. Also a special note of thanks to Sunwing and the crew of flight 685 who got us out of Cuba in the nick of time. Much appreciated.
My boyfriend and I decided on this resort after reading the positive reviews and the price was agreeable! We traveled in late March, and we were the youngest couple we saw all week (24-27yrs old). We liked that this was adults only and no children running around! Rooms: if you are looking for a view, ask for 3rd floor or higher. our room was just off the lobby and faced the ventilation vents for the main dining room. there was no noise but we could not enjoy our balcony as it always smelled like deep fryer. not the most modern room, but was perfect for what we needed as we were only in there to sleep. Ines was our housekeeper and she did a fantastic job. always towel art left each day. 24HR bar: the music was great! whether singers or just a band, always great music. Ramon was a most attentive server, always recognized us and came over right away to serve us. Roberto at the mojito bar always saw you coming and had your drink ready for you. ask Elio about his dogs! he was a great guy to chat with. Food:if you are worried about getting sick, stick to what you know/what is familiar to you. don't eat anything that you you'll know will make you sick (eg. the yogurt was never refrigerated). there were always plenty of choices even for the pickiest eater. Don Perrone restaurant was surprisingly good! spinach cannelloni was delicious and flavorful. El Romantico was decent. The steak was a cheap cut, but well cooked considering. My favourite was the beach grill for lunch! always had something different and it was delicious every time. we ate here everyday for lunch. Pool: can't really comment on the pool and pool side entertainment as we spent all of our time at the beach. when we did stop by, it was on our way to the beach. Marlene at the bar always recognized you and had your drink started before you reached her. Disco: retro night was a blast! it was also all inclusive which is unlike most other resorts! definitely a fun night out for some dancing. Overall, i would most definitely recommend this resort if you are looking for a quiet trip away. The people are amazing, the beach is flawless and the hotel is comfy!
My husband and I were evacuated to this hotel from the Melia Cayo coco thinking we would escape hurricane irma, that wasn't the case! We arrived after a 7 hour coach trip at about 10.30. The dancers & staff welcomed us with drinks and they had kept the buffet open for us which was great. Our 1st room was located in the block nearest the beach on the ground floor which concerned me a bit as we were hearing that there may be storm surges and I had visions of us being flooded when the hurricane hit so we asked to change rooms on the Saturday morning (the day irma had started to affect us) we got transferred into the main hotel onto the 3rd floor which made us feel much better.we stayed in the room then till lunch time the next day after Irma had passed, unfortunately our patio window had been damaged so we were moved again to block 67, room 6706. We are very grateful to the hotel and staff for looking after us and this hotel could be much better if they could fix some things. The last room we were in was very damp to the point we had to put our beach towels on the floor to walk on so we didn't slip, the inside of the bathroom door was mouldy and rotting at the bottom. There was very dangerous wiring to the mini fridge. The buffet restaurant was over run with flies but couldn't figure were they were coming from as the doors were always shut, really put me of eating unless I knew they couldn't have been on the food. Why isn't the bread etc covered? We ate in the Italian on our last night that was lovely, doors wide open, no flies! The grounds were lovely so with a few fixes it could be a much better hotel.
"Melia Las Antillas and hurricane Irma"
My husband and I travelled to Melia Las Antillas for the second year in a row. We had such a great time the year before that we were so excited to return. We arrived on Tuesday September 5th to beautiful weather. We connected with staff we met the year before that we consider friends and were having a great time. It wasn't until we arrived in Cuba that we heard about hurricane Irma. We had searched for hurricane warnings before we left and didn't hear anything. Not once did we hear from Sunwing about a possible hurricane hitting Cuba Up until Friday afternoon we all thought it was going to miss Cuba. The winds started late Friday night. On Saturday morning we went down for breakfast and was met at the door by one of the managers Kandy. Kandy told us to go have breakfast and then go back to our room and get in the bathroom until the all clear. We pulled the cushions off of the couch and made a bed in the bathroom. We could hear the winds getting stronger outside and it was raining pretty heavy. At about 5:30 pm our patio door was blown out of its frame. My husband called the customer service and told them we needed to be evacuated from the room. Kandy and about 7 guys came rushing to the room about 2 minutes after our call. They held the door up and then braced it while Kandy helped us pack and moved us to a lower floor. We were in the new room for 10 minutes before we were evacuated again to the second floor in a hallway in chairs all night long. We could hear glass shattering and the wind was so strong coming down the hall. As we were evacuated with only our important papers the staff gave us towells to keep warm. We sat in the hallway from 6pm until 7:45am Sunday morning. The we were escorted to our room. Exhausted we fell asleep and woke up at 10:30 with food being delivered. We were told we could leave the room at 1pm and the buffet would be open. The damage to the resort was devastating. Palm trees were thrown around like match sticks. Patio doors blown off, roofs torn off, pathways completely blocked by trees and shrubs. It was the most terrifying experience I have ever experienced. Through it all the staff at Melia Las Antillas were there watching over us keeping us safe and fed. Some of the staff worked for 3 days straight leading up to the hurricane. Then worked some more during it. They were amazing and we will be forever grateful to each one of them. We had heard from other tourists from other resorts that the staff all left them to fend for themselves. The Melia Las Antillas staff werr with us every step of the way. Unfortunately Sunwing was non existant the entire time. We saw the sunwing rep once and he brushed us off and we never saw him again. It was not until Monday that we saw anyone from Sunwing. The sun was out and it was beautiful. It was then they told us we had to go home. We still had a week left of our holiday but we were not given a choice to stay. We have been home 3 days and still no communication from them. Are they going to either refund our week or give us a credit we don't know. We purchased excursions through them that were not taken. Are they going to refund them? We simply don't know. Thomas Cook and other other airlines are offering full refunds to all their passengers. What about Sunwing? We simply don't know. In short if you are looking for a resort in Cuba Melia Las Antillas is the place to be during a crisis. Thank you Melia Las Antillas staff! You will forever be our Cuban family. A special shout out to our friends Maylin (concierge lounge), Yadira in the buffett, Enrecka (sure this is spelt wrong) at the beach dragging loungers around, life guard Micheal Angelo, our favorite bartender at the pool bar Milady(spelt wrong), Entainment MC Mickey Mouse (aka Eteri) and last but not least Kandy and her staff that is very calm in a hurricane We love you all
