Relaxing stay, no kids. Good service and friendly staff. Good food, at the buffet restaurant and at the hamburguer grill by the beach. Good piña colada too! And there is a central lake with two sharks!
"Very Enjoyable Stay!"
Getting a break from winter, we travelled with another couple to relax and enjoy the weather and breach. This resort fit the bill. We prefer small to medium sized resorts and we never felt over run by visitors. Also since its an adult only (16+) this was mainly a 30's and up resort. What we loved: great beach and swim area. Unfortunately we had windy weather 2 days and the swimming was too dangerous. When we did have waves it was a blast riding the waves and bouncing in the ocean. The water was reasonably warm. You need to reserve chairs early at the pool or beach (by 8:00am or before). The guys on the beach were great setting up the chairs and cleaning them for us each day. We loved the gardens and pool area also. Mature palm trees throughout the resort and nicely maintained shrubs and plants. The central area has a pond with fish a two 4 foot sharks to watch and several walk bridges over them. We also appreciated the food. The 3 a la carte restaurants were nice for sit down meals in the evenings. Romantico was our favourite ( nice live music but way too loud for a small restaurant!). Excellent food and service. The Italian and Cuban were also good. We particularly liked the Italian for lunch but you need to get there early since they only serve about 20 people and one sitting on the terrace. The Cuban was also good with a BBQ always running. The buffet has something for everyone ( pasta bar, pizza, freshly grilled fish, nice salad bars and the best bread we have experienced in Cuba. Carlos the director of food services explained that they back all their own breads. Definitely a plus. Desserts were also good! Breakfast is served here (cheeses, meats, egg stations, breads, fruits......). Also the servers are great throughout the resort, we quickly had our favorites. We regularly tip ever if it isn't necessary. Also appreciated a money exchange on site with great hours. Internet is 2 cuc per hour but is slow and only in the main lobby. The rooms are either in the main building 5 stories or the bungalows 3 stories. We stayed in the main building which over looks the whole central gardens and pools. The rooms are dated with need to renovate but truly we spent little time in the rooms and everything was fully functional (king bed, couch area, safe, tub/shower combo). Really fine overall. A big thanks to Carlos for fussing with us and checking in with us at the restaurants. Enjoyed especially the singers and Aqua show for entertainment. Nice Cuban Day party! Took the sailboat to snorkel about 2 km off the beach was also fun. Would definitely return.
We have been with some friends to Melià Las Antillas during our holidays in Cuba. The resort is very good situated in Varadero. As you enter the staff is very friendly so our stay started very nice. The room area is very quiet so you can relax and enjoy your rest as the hotel is 'adults only'. The swimming pool area is perfect to take a sunbath and enjoy your day with a mojito or a piña colada. The access to the private beach is so close, once you get there is everything you ever wanted, blue sea, sandy beach and plenty of deck chairs to relax. Also there are plenty of activities to do such as scubadiving or beachvoleyball. The food is amazing, all included with quality products well cooked, the buffet is excelent. Also there are cuban food exhibitions during the day to enjoy local dishes. Bevereages are available through the whole center. Also there are day/night shows, such as live music or cabaret shows. I'd specially thanks to Carlos, the head of restaurant business in the hotel, who took care that our stance were so nice.
"Very pleasent stay with some minor points for improvement"
We've just come back from 3 weeks in Cuba of which we spent the last full week at Melia las Antillas. If you travel to Cuba just for a resort hotel you may be disappointed because you don't realize the luxury this resort offers compared to an AirBnB (Casa Particular) in Cuba, but yes, there's definitely many things that can be improved at this hotel, still we very much enjoyed our stay here! Hotel layout: it's set around a pond and central swimming pool with a main building and several lower standalone buildings (2/3 stories) and we were very lucky to be located in the corder (module 64) and in the farthest room so all we saw from the room were swinging palm trees and it was 100% quiet. It's easy to walk around the resort or to the beach, all in just a few minutes. Restaurants are at different places in the resort for both lunch and dinner, there is just 1 breakfast location. Internet is only found in the lobby (as in any hotel in Cuba). Room: we loved the spaceous room with a little lower sofa area and balcony, the bed is huge and comfortable enough, a foam top layer would improve comfort at little cost (!), the bathroom is dated and really needs an upgrade, more than just new tiles that have been done, showering in a bath tub is very uncomfortable, better to change for an open style shower with wider shower head. Water temperature and pressure are very good though. And a window in the bathroom would be very welcome rather than the glass wall. TOWELS NEED RENEWING! They were mostly thin, often stained, and should no longer be used. They did get replaced each day if placed on the ground. Linnen got replaced as often as you want in case you put the special card for that on the bed. Restaurants: we hated the buffet restaurant, it was very smelly and you could see the 'smoke' from cooking/baking gathered everywhere below the ceiling as the ventilation in the cooking area is very poor. So against the rules we managed to eat 5 times out of 7 in one of the a la carte restaurants, max 3 times for a 1 week stay is typically allowed. We cheated a little to overcome the terrible environment of the buffet restaurant. Also the food quality of the buffet restaurant for us was not sufficient, we may be spoiled... All 3 a la carte restaurants however offer good to very good food. We preferred the open style Cuban restaurant where we had dinner 3 times, and we also dined at the Romantic and Italian restaurants. Not every dish was perfect, but in Cuba you simply don't get all ingredients. The only big disappointment was to get served roastbeef with fish sauce when having ordered vitello tonato (veal with tuna sauce). House wine at the hotel is very tastefull so no need to order additional wine at a cost. At the romantic restaurant there was non-stop live music of a sax player which was just TOO LOUD, and made conversation very hard. We also loved that in high season the Italian restaurant opens also for lunch, no reservation needed. Drinks: almost everything is included throughout the hotel, we loved the Ritz champagne cocktail, and of course the many rums, tinto de verano and more. Shame the glasses weren't that pretty and not well dried at times showing drying stains from the dish washer. STAFF IS MOSTLY EXTREMELY FRIENDLY! Really only a few exceptions there, but most people seem to be really having fun at work. We loved the lunch-time waitress of the Italian restaurant and the Hamburger Chef by the beach, super friendly both of them! The beach is very nice, as in many hotels one needs to head out to the beach at sunrise to claim chairs using a towel... hotels should really have rules against this. But we just went along with it, and since we were steps away from the beach with our room it was not much of a burden. The new pool- and beach beds are very comfortable. I also enjoyed some of the nautical options like kayak that is all included. Entertainment is something we don't care about, but it's part of the all inclusive thing.... so there's shows, ballet, water ballet, game night etc. Some better than others, the water ballet was exceptionally good. There's a little shop in the lobby with imported stuff, all very expensive so whatever you're going to be needing during your stay, bring it with you! Internet is 2 CUC per hour and can be paused to use remaining time later, use is in the lobby, quality is poor as the connection gets cut a lot, which we haven't experienced at other internet points throughout Cuba so this should be looked into. ADULT ONLY is also a big plus!! What else can I say, we relaxed a lot, the weather was great.... sigh
"Relaxing March break!"
My husband and I spent March 15-22 at Meliá Las Antillas. It was our second trip to Cuba and our first stay at an all-inclusive. We were very pleased with our experience, and I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing break from our Canadian winter! There were a number of things that stood out and very few things that were less than awesome: The staff were great all around -- housekeeping, front desk, and concierge lounge; and at the buffet, à la cartes, and bars. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and easy-going. Our room was very quiet, clean and spacious. We stayed on the 4th floor of the main building (4221), which was east of the lobby. We had a view of the Terrace, so I could enjoy the live music each evening from our balcony, while my husband got ready for dinner. I thought the variety of food offered at the buffet breakfasts, lunches, and dinners was excellent. The quality of coffee at breakfast was variable, but I had a decent cortado or cappuccino every morning at the lobby bar, where we could also access reliable wi-fi for 2CUC/hour. My favourite part of breakfast was the fresh fruit, juices, and smoothies, and I couldn't get enough of the fried plantain each evening! I only wish there had been arroz congri available every night at the buffet! We enjoyed it on our first night and suspect it was available on the nights we ate at the à la cartes, as we never saw it again. It was SO DELICIOUS!!! Aside from the buffet, we had an amazing seafood dinner at El Conuco (which would have been perfect had there not been four cats constantly circling, walking under the tables, and sitting and staring up at us). We had an enjoyable meal at El Romantico, and had our special lobster dinner at the Italian restaurant, which was also excellent. The beach was mostly clean (minus the cigarette butts), and we were able to find space to sit in both sun and shade every day. As we didn't go to the beach until about 10:30 or 11, it was always a challenge to find two loungers that were both clean and not broken, but we managed. (I was lucky, as my husband was patient with the cleaning, and he would take the broken lounger to sit on.) While we had selected the concierge service, and the 4th floor worked out great for us, I'm not sure I would choose it again. I'm not convinced we got value for what we paid for. We couldn't get into our room until after 16:00 (though our travel documents and the website indicated check-in was 15:00), and even then, we didn't get our beach towels until after lunch our second day. (In room beach towels are one of the perks.) Also a perk is the inclusion of three premium bottles in the room. We didn't receive those until our third day, which given a seven-day stay, was after almost half our trip was over. Our mini-bar was not restocked daily. We started with two cans of beer in the fridge, and once they were gone, it was two days before we received a replacement can (and only one instead of two). Our à la carte bookings worked out, but even that wasn't a hassle-free process. Having to continually go to the concierge lounge to sort out these minor issues made us feel like we were being complainers, while we just wanted to make sure we were getting the services we had paid for. All in all, it truly was a relaxing week, and we would definitely return and recommend the resort to others.
