Over Sol Sirenas Coral

"Shocking"

   15-08-2017
Just arrived back home and sadly this was the worst hotel experience ever had, the reasons are endless but firstly we booked 2 rooms directly for the 7 of us to arrive to only have a double bed in each room, the only resolution was the additional 2 small fold up beds and our 6 year old had to sleep in a cot all week!! The hotel is in very poor condition and would not be up to any EU safety standards, there are not locks on any patio windows and the stair side rails are just jagged aluminium razor sharp to damage feet. the pool was only seen to be cleaned at the last day, The kids club was non existence so we decided to play mini golf, mistake as broken bottles and a used condom over one of the holes!!, This was reported on day 2 but at the end of the trip nothing had been done to remove said articles, there were exposed electrical cables next to the pool hanging down from the footbridge that crossed the pool (Mind you after watching a foreign child pull his trunks down to urinate in the pool from the edge you probably don't want to use the pool anyway) on the path to the beach is another part of the hotel which is derelict and in total ruin., We caught an old man taking photos of various children including our kids in the pool, he was also secretly videoing women in bikinis, again this was reported after we confronted him and he ran away. The food from the buffet is not to Western tastes and sadly each of the 5 themed restaurants was also very poor with most meals being inedible, even the butter served in the Italian was rancid one meal. Very few staff spoke English so this made it very hard to make them understand the concerns we had. There is no airport transfer service as advertised and no phone signal or any free wifi, the only way to connect is to buy a $CUC 2 scratch card and hope for connection. We had asked to speak to the GM on 5 different occasions over the week and finally on our last day a man introduced as Omar appeared, he had no name/title badge and no business card. We spent 40 mins detailing all of the above issues and more but he refused to take notes and just said that no other guests had complained. (we checked the mini golf just before leaving, certain that at the very least he would of cleaned up the mess, but no such luck) On a single plus note, the beach is one of the best you will ever find with a beach shack where Mercedes makes the best Pina Coladas. This is a real shame as we paid a lot of money for 2 rooms but such a small amount seems to be actually received by the hotel, The Melia group Must instigate a management / training system / education program and surely spend a little money and clean the hotel up then it could be a little gem because of its great location on the beach....

"Not bad"

   09-08-2017
Was there from 29.07-09.08.17. Stayed in Coral main block, third floor, room 1239. I was all satisfied. View was not too bad (some construction works-no noise from it) I didn't want to spend 200eu for a "sea view" (price for 11days). The territory's big and beautiful, several swim.pools, bars, gym, amazing animation team (join them in aquagym and salsa lesson at the beach, so much fun!), evening shows (dancing team !!) well everything is ok there. Some ppl showed horrible pics here I DIDNT see anything criminal there, rly. We never had problems with hot water in bathroom. Aircon worked well (but was too chilly for me, I think you can't regulate the temperature, so I switched it off when needed). All evening shows and parties were hold in Coral territory. I experienced just these 2problems: 1. Buffet. We had queues! Lunch and dinner time. God! Just to enter inside the canteen/when they run out of clean plates/cups/coffee.. huge queue to get grilled meat(it wasn't good) and fish (fish was yummy). Sometimes we had everything I mentioned in one time it made me so annoyed..one wknd they open both restaurants (sirenas and coral) and it was like a dream, no queues at all! Why they can't do it all time.. food was ok most of times. Sometimes it was nothing to eat honestly (for meat eaters) but rly rarely. 2. Location. It's not far from downtown, just 15-20 min walking. BUT there is a new hotel construction on a way to downtown so it's not convenient to walk there. Anyway Taxi is 5cuc. So if you already booked a stay here don't be sad reading some bad reviews it's not bad at all. I had a nice stay there (I forgot a "buffet issue" right after I was at beach), just be relaxed and don't pay attention on some issues, it's your holiday, just enjoy it! But if you r still searching and book evrth by yourself (not a package tour) I guess you can find cheaper deals. And just tidy up after yourself, don't leave cigs and plastic glasses everywhere, rubbish beans r everywhere. I don't get why they don't use reusable plastic glasses tho (not eco-friendly) :-/ My advice: catch a 5cuc varadero tour bus, just look around and figure where the hotel is located, bcs first I thought we r in the middle of nowhere. Rum and cigars r cheaper in Havana (for instance rum legendario (dark #7) was 6.75 in Havana and 11.90 in varadero).

"Sol Sirenis Coral: Potential for a Great Holiday"

   05-08-2017
Sol Sirenis Coral: Potential for a Great Holiday Blessed with lovely flora including a great variety of Palm trees, neatly sculpted hedges and flowering bushes on a prime stretch of beachfront, Sol Sirenis Coral Resort has the potential to leave you pleased as punch. That’s if everything goes well. If not, you could go away disappointed. Having been to this Sol Sirenis Coral resort twice in the last five years with an aborted attempt in between, and knowing every nuance like the back of my hand, and mindful of the reviews both good and bad, I can speak to its upside and potential downside as good as anyone. After our last two week summer holiday (July 10-24), I must admit that my original “A Little Bit of Heaven in Varadero” review, is now perhaps a bit too optimistic these days given the unpredictable nature or “split personality” that resembles the “two-in-one” hotel resort. Now before I explain what all means, let me say that if you’re not fussy about the room you get or the building you’re in and all you care about is a beautiful beach on a lovely property with a reasonably good location, adequate food to and possibility of a nice a la carte dinner or two at possibly a good price, this is the place for you. On the other hand, if you are a “Coral section” fan who wants a problem free room with a nice view not far from the building’s main lobby and reassurance that you’ll get what you paid for and the Coral section won’t be closed (for some reason whether due a technical problem of some sort or hotel re-shuffling to minimize labiur cost at this two-in one resort), then be forewarned, anything can happen and there’s little you can do once you’re here. Now, had our vacation not been interrupted on Day 10 by the closure of the Coral section buffet restaurant, snack bar and then lobby bar, we would’ve been pleased as punch! Up until then, other than our original room assignment, everything was dynamite even if terribly hot and humid some days. Unfortunately, this was not the case in what demonstrates the unpredictable nature of this Sol Melia property that, at least in this instance, claimed a blown transformer meant the closure of the Coral section. Hot as it was, it wasn’t surprising albeit somewhat questionable. With that, came the long walks back and forth between hotels for buffet breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and on our last day, our beloved lobby bar, in July’s unforgivingly strong sun. That said, credit management for mitigating the problem by keeping the Coral section pool bar open and the very convenient, El Ranchon Buffet Grill restaurant open. This meant everything to us heat-sensitive Northerners. Thank goodness! All things considered though, I’d still return if I was sure I was going to get what I booked and wanted. Yet, as we all know, the catch phrase you here again and again is “sorry there can be no guarantees.” Well, that’s why we aborted our last reservation here just two years after our first visit in favour of another hotel before we left Toronto. After all, excellent chambermaid service, comfortable rooms with a good mini-fridge, comfortable beds, decent satellite TV (with HBO, Sports channels, CTV from Canada), great closet space, good air con, free safety deposit box, in-room iron, ironing board and umbrella (for those odd rainshowers), and good service in a clean, bug free hotel on a great stretch of beach, usually makes for a great holiday vacation. That they also serve good Havana Club Rum and a decent selection of international liquor, Crystal Beer and surprisingly decent (albeit instant powdered) pineapple juice with cocktail drinks plus chicken and tuna sandwiches and fries (most of the time), to go with your usual burgers and hotdogs, makes Sol Sirenis Coral a good choice for people wanting a cut above most other non luxury resorts. Added to this, there is also a modest gym (needs air con though), games room with pool tables and ping pong and two on site convenience stores that offer cold beverages, snacks, souvenirs, etc. at good prices so there’s no need to shop around. Speaking of what the future holds, I had the pleasure to sit down with the hotel’s new manager and things sound great! Plans are to renovate the Sol Sirenis building, enlarge its buffet restaurant, enclose it and the a la carte restaurants and install air conditioning in all of them (great ideas), as well as refurbish rooms, make necessary repairs and ensure the swimming pools are kept sparkling clean. Plus, plans are to utilize the hotel’s new Chefs to create a “new, improved quality and variety” of food at the buffet restaurants. It all sounds cool to me so let’s hope Sol Melia lives up to its promises and reputation. If so’II be back in a heartbeat! That said, there’s some ideas I have beginning with reopening the Coral building’s 5th floor rooftop bar and having it open from 7 PM to 1 AM. This would alleviate line-up’s and crowding during the evening at the lobby bar, something guests have griped about, and allow visitors the chance to enjoy its spectacular views of the Bay of Cardenas and lovely Varadero beachfront. Shame nobody gets to see that now. Now that's one way you distinguish yourself from other hotels! Finally, I would also suggest they bring back the option of grabbing some takeaway food nearest the beach bar, where for instance, they once cooked up great Paella and Chinese Chicken Noodle dishes in disposable Styrofoam containers with lids on them. Moreover, repairs should include the Coral building which as old as it is, needs some work beginning with inspections of all the rooms to see what needs fixing. On the cost savings side, I suggest new renovations omit the costly and unnecessary bidets, no one needs them. In summary, for an older, outlying central location Varadero resort with staff that aim to please, a lovely beachfront property with a lot of great things going for it, and now eager new management fuelled by the promise of more investment from the Spanish Sol Melia chain, Coral ranks up there as a reasonably good choice going forward that can only get better. Finally, for those who wish to get away from the crowd and music and enjoy exceptionally good accommodation on their own private beach, I suggest you upgrade to the more private Cosmonautas section of the resort. See the attached photo for a peak at its lounge area. in the end, though, whatever you choose, you’re sure to have a memorable time in the incredibly fun, interesting and largest beach resort of its kind in the world, Varadero, Cuba! Cheers SteveAnthony_Toronto.

"Great Beach, Terrible Hotel"

   03-08-2017
The hotel is aging, with no effort to make it better. The food is pretty bad, which is not a reflection on Cuba, we found better food elsewhere in Havana. The beach nearby is fantastic, that in itself is worth going to this area. However if you want to be active there's not a whole load to keep yourself occupied with. Most of the entertainment in the hotel is tacky - but it may provide a good level amusement.

"Got sick due to a moldy room"

   02-08-2017
Never got around to reviewing this place but stayed here in January 2016 and I will not come back. The thing to understand is that, this is cuba and that hotel standards there is not what you would expect as back home. As such, I would highlight that the staff is friendly which is something that translated across borders. However, the one thing that was really unfortunate was that we were given a really moldy room, where the aircon was literally leaking. As such, both myself and my travel companion got sick from staying in that room for a week. We requested to get a new room (not possible) and that they fixed the problem (not possible). Food and otherwise was as could be expected from cuban standards. Worst thing is the price - you pay a lot for very little, but that seems to be the general idea for Varadero.
