Over Sol Sirenas Coral

"Tired and Odd"

   27-04-2017
Stayed here only one night. There are two separate hotels here: Sirenas and Coral. The check ins are separate and since the name is combined you don't know where to go when you arrive. We were at the Coral site. Pool deck/concrete was cracked and had been painted too long ago. Layout is odd and seemingly lacks reason with buildings at weird angles looking inward and many buildings with poor views. My room looked over a rooftop to a portion of the pool. There are some houses on property that can be rented out but looked almost like staff housing. Buffet was just ok. Plenty of food. Long lines for the grill The beach is the best part of the resort. Excellent sandy beach going a fair way out. Rooms are odd. My room had a large jacuzzi tub in the middle of the room and shower that was too small. The TV was not usable -- all channels had heavy static.

"A fun beach holiday"

   26-04-2017
We stayed at the Sol Sirenas Coral (on the Coral side) in Varadero Cuba. I keep going back because I have such a good time…. Good value for the Canadian dollar! I love my beach walks - 5 star. I love the live dance shows at night - such amazing talent and beautiful, creative performances. I love to dance so my favourite part of my vacation is the dance classes both on the beach at noon and at 5:00 on the shady stage at the Sirenas. I enjoyed the animation team. They made every event, dance party at night and even ping pong with my husband so much fun!!!! “Equipo animación del Sirenas es la mejor porque trabajan: Lisbey, Amed, Renier, Leyra, Ainesey, Odlanier Y el jefe de animacion Otto.” And I’m learning Spanish! We loved eating at the buffet and the a la carte restaurants, (Italian, Mexican and Cuban), in the evening, the Ranchon Playa restaurant at 1:00 for lunch every day. Delicious! The service is wonderful. The coffee at the Tea Corner at the Coral is the BEST in the World! I always get a massage from Ernesto at the Spa. – very healing. (25 pesos). We had never been there so late in the season before – end of March-beginning of April. The ocean was warm and beautiful for swimming. I walk the stairs, so the slow elevator doesn’t bother me. I take it for my suitcase on the way in and the way out. I will go back with friends in December when the snow falls at home.

"Pleasantly Surprised"

   25-04-2017
We visited the Solar Sirenas the first week of April. Booked the trip last minute so got a really good deal. 4 adults staying in the Coral side of the resort. Food was actually very good with plenty to choose from each meal. Resort is undergoing some renovations to add more rooms closers to the beach as well. Coral side is a bit of a party zone but not to the point that it was overbearing. 10 minute cab ride to the centre of town. Just as cheap as taking the all day bus and definitely quicker. Would go again for sure.

"For our first time in Cuba we are glad we stayed here."

   24-04-2017
This was our first trip to Cuba; we stayed a week on the Coral side; we did not choose this side it was assigned to us. Our review is based on the Coral side though we do mention the Sirenas side occasionally. We made the decision to stay in this resort purely from the reviews on this site; I noticed this place had a LOT of reviews compared to some of the other resorts. Now to dive into the resort itself I start with what we found lacking and some information just to be aware of so you aren't disappointed upon arrival and then talk about what was great. Cons/Things to Know: - The common areas of the resort weren't cleaned as regularly or as thorough as would be expected. The washroom in the coral lobby was in disarray a fair amount of times with garbage overflowing and stalls dirty and even doors that would not close or lock properly, soap and paper to wipe your hands was out. When you exit the elevator or the stair well you can see that there is garbage in the open areas; we seen the same 2 drink cups (partially still full) at the sides of our elevator door from the second day of our trip until we left. - Entertainment was not that clear for locations and times. I mean on paper yes, but in actuality we never seen a single show of evening entertainment. The only daytime entertainment we encountered was music on the beach and the occasional volleyball game; we also witnessed aquafit on the last day we were there. - We were stupid and didn't bring our local currency with us to the country and had to use the Sirenas sides exchange because they have a card machine that you can take a cash advance on your credit card up to 500 CUC per day. The machines connection is hit and miss and the guy that runs it is kind of cold and seems like he'd rather be anywhere else than helping you. You MUST bring your passport to do this. Also, don't go on his lunch break 12-1:30, but ALWAYS ask ahead of time if the cards are working that day. - The food markers for the buffet were hit and miss, as in sometimes the food was marked, sometimes not, and if there was a description it was very vague. Also cold and hot food would be next to each other, so don't assume the temperature of anything, either ask or test it out ahead of time because what you are used to being hot might be cold and vice versa. - Drinks at the bars are not necessarily the same throughout by name and ask for their selection or know ahead of time what you want. They do have a drink menu, sometimes you just have to ask to see it or find it on the tables. Also the drinks are made different each time by each server we found, some poured heavy and some poured light, it was all free pour. If you have a preference make it known to your server. - The hotel had four elevators on the Coral side; only two of them worked (one per stairwell side) and the one that was working on the one side only worked for certain floors. - Signs haven't been updated in the resort; the elevator signs states that there is a bar on the fourth floor... there hasn't been a bar there in about 5 years. Times aren't posted for locations other than the main buffet, so the tea and coffee corner will close around supper time, and the snack bar is open 24 hours, alcohol is not served after 2 pm at the snack bar. Not sure when the beach bar closes but the pool and pool bars closed around sunset/supper time. - Snack bar menu isn't current or doesn't correctly show what you can eat on any given day, just ask the staff. I remember the menu showing pizza as an option, we never saw pizza the entire time we were there. Also be warned that the snack bar is plagued by birds, not necessarily bad or mean birds but they are swooping and diving all over; there is sometimes bird poop on tables and chairs. - There are stray cats and dogs that frequent the resort; if you are allergic or wary of animals, just avoid them, they seemed friendly enough. - There was only one clock that we seen in the whole resort and it was at the front desk lobby and it had died. So wear a watch or have your phone or some sort of time device on you. Most resort staff also seemed to wear watches so you can always ask them. - Internet needs to be bought as well as phone calls; we didn't use the wi-fi so not sure of cost or how fast or slow it was. It can be purchased just to the the left of the Coral side reception in the corner. - TV turned itself on because it was used as an alarm by the guests that stayed there prior to us. You can use this feature if you want; not sure how. We just unplugged the tv at night and when we left the room, so it wouldn't disturb us or anyone else. - There may be bedbugs or other bugs in the room; we had a few random bug bites, other couples complained it was much worse, we also did not bring food into our room or our beds. Only seen a few tiny moths in the room itself, didn't check the beds themselves. - Dishes were sometimes containing food particles and such in the "clean" stacks for the buffet. - Some of the electrical outlets in the room had been upgraded to 110V and others were still 220V. It was hit and miss. - The staff's ability to speak English is hit and miss, though when you are headed to a foreign country, whether it is in the tourist district or not. I don't personally believe that the people there must accommodate our language barriers. We are in their world so we should try to make the effort to learn a bit of their language as well, at least meet them part of the way, but that's just my two cents. Pro's/Awesome Parts/Advice: - The bust stop to go to the nearby shopping mall or into Varadero is VERY close to this hotel and you are usually one of the first stops off if not THEE first and one of the last to get on which is pretty sweet. - Make friends with the bartenders and tip them; it's worth it. Enrique and Evelin at the front lobby bar made our trip amazing. They were kind, quick and made us feel welcome and important by remembering our names and checking in with us often. Awesome service. Chat with them as best as you can and be friendly. Yes it is all inclusive and you don't HAVE to tip, but at least be kind and courteous, especially if you don't tip. ALSO if you are a couple or family and want faster service, ALWAYS send the woman/girl. The Cubans seem to have a penchant for pretty ladies. :) - Room was spacious and fairly tidy but not overly clean. The shower never seemed to be cleaned or touched, the same marks or stains were in the same spots all week. Keep in mind we tipped everyday so not sure if you don't if this is any worse. Don't compare the cleanliness to that of a hotel in your home town or country, don't expect the cleanliness standard to be the same because you will be sorely disappointed. We didn't feel grossed out or disgusted so we didn't complain but I'm sure if you brought it up they'd address all of your concerns. Maruska was our maid and was the nicest person we met in Cuba, truly a wonderful hardworking lady; she made us feel welcome and at home in our home away from home. - Beach was beautiful and clean; if you want a lounger, get there fairly early. The water starts shallow and then there is a sandbar and then it gets deep gradually. The calmness of the water was hit and miss, but there is no affecting that. The beach wasn't chaotic or overcrowded. It was beautiful and everything you could imagine paradise to be. - Heard the a la carte restaurants were amazing, cannot personally attest to this as we did not go. Heard the Mexican and Italian were to die for, so if you are not loving the buffet make sure to hit up the restaurants. - AC in the room worked awesome and wasn't ridiculously loud. We were on the 4th floor in the corner facing the road, not the beach. - Front desk people spoke the best English, and were very helpful and ready to serve you. A few ladies didn't have name tags and were certainly helpful but I remember Yenisey (sorry if I butchered that) was incredibly friendly and helpful, I remember her the best, her service and caring attitude are memorable. - Restaurant staff on the Coral side was very attentive and service was good even without tips, though I am more than sure they appreciate it. Mara (again sorry if I butcher it) and Yeny were very sweet and super attentive. If you want quick and efficient service like close to home, find a way to sit in these ladies sections, you'll be well taken care of. The Sirenas side was rumored to have better food but it was a bit of a madhouse over there compared to the calm order and spaciousness of the Coral side. Choose your poison. - We were pre-warned MANY times that the food is not great. I would argue that it's not that the food isn't great, it's just not what we are used to; especially in a buffet situation. Spices are hit and miss, sometimes the food is plain, sometimes it is spiced. Condiments are also hit and miss for selection. At first you might have no idea what it is you are choosing from, but let it be known you won't starve, there is always something to eat. We saw people live on fruit and donuts all week; just gotta do what you gotta do. Over all we would stay here again in a heart beat. We heard MANY horror stories of other resorts near us that made us count our stars that we were in good hands. Keep in mind you are in a country where time froze in the late 1950's; if you go there expecting 2017 standards and customs (not just this resort but Cuba in general) you will be sorely disappointed and I recommend going to a different country. This resort was flooded with families and children ran around care free, it was very safe and welcome for families, couples and singles alike. There is also a diverse range of cultures and languages at all times it, which we found fascinating. Thank you Sol Sirenas Coral for being our home away from home!

"Lobby BAR 😎"

   23-04-2017
We had the best time at this resort! 2nd time and one of my buddies has been there for the 7th time now! and oh wow best people, we were taking care of very well specially at the "Lobby Bar Coral" with the best Mirlam, Enrrique, Yoan, Pancho, Ada, Evelyn! These good people helped us with anything we need it, it's like we were in a VIP! But over all we had a very good time so sad it was only 7days! I wouldn't mind heading back there next year and to see the good people there again! Thank you to everyone there at Sol Sirenas Coral 😎😎
