Over Sol Sirenas Coral

"Awesome people and even better beach"

   26-06-2017
This was my first all-inclusive resort and from what I have heard about Cuba I was nervous. I will admit the food was not cooked to my standards in the buffet. If it wasn't for Marilyn who worked the omelet station we probably would starve all day. The Italian a la carte restaurant was by far the best!! The staff were all super friendly and sweet. My favourite staff were Vladimir and Lisbey (Insu). The resort was really quiet since part of it was closed down due to damage from a hurricane. The entertainers such as Lisbey, did their best to keep the activities fun and interactive for everyone. I did not go into the pool because about 70-100 steps was the beach and it was beautiful. The water was clear and there was always enough umbrellas and beach chairs! My favourite bar was the lobby bar which is where Vladimir bartended. He was super sweet and kept my friend and I engaged, he also made a mean piña coloda! The rooms were a bit old but they were cleaned everyday and we were given a bottle of water everyday! If you are looking for luxury then this is not the place but if you are looking for a cheap down to earth get away this is definitely the place!

"This resort has such potential ... but we wouldn't go back."

   21-06-2017
We stayed at the Coral side (Two resorts within one large resort - Coral and Sirenas) - At first site - what a beautiful place! Palm trees, wide open large lobby, beautiful pool. Right off the bat we were given the keys to an unmade unclean musty smelling room which did not include an ocean view which we paid for. We were tired and had to lug our suitcases back to the lobby (2 floors down) to get the room we paid for. After we received a new set of keys 2 floors up from where we were initially, we walked into a made up very plain but clean room. The terrace overlooked the pool area which is beautiful and the pools are well maintained and there are many many palm trees and it's lovely. However, it really isn't an oceanview from our standards. You could see a "little bit" of the ocean over the top of another building - not what we thought we were getting. We had two single beds which we pushed together (apparently it's quite standard there). We didn't plan on watching TV and it's a good thing because it was an old black and white and the remote didn't work and no buttons on the TV did either. The large curtain that you closed at night that covered the patio doors was broken and wouldn't close tightly so I used hair clips which eventually broke. Our shower was a "trickle" and not hot and when spending time at the pool and on the beach you need a shower or bath afterwards and there wasn't enough water coming out of the shower head (which was hanging by a thread - not sure how it didn't fall on our heads) to get a good clean feeling and it therefore took a long time. It was impossible to wash your hair and it feel clean. The toilet upon flushing wouldn't take down "unmentionables" and we had to use our garbage can filled with water to force flush those "unmentionables" down. We were there a week and this got tiring. The button you pulled to make the water come out of the shower head was broken as well (we needed a pair of pliers). On to the food - the buffet located at the Coral had wonderful staff and we really enjoyed our servers, so pleasant and friendly. The gardeners sang and what beautiful voices they had. However, the food was such a disappointment. It was supposed to be an international buffet but we saw little evidence of this. I am one of the least fussy people I know and I lived on bread and pasta and felt unwell the entire time we were there. My husband enjoyed the omelettes in the morning and the fries at the 24 hour snack bar were good. One night we went to the buffet at the Sirenas side and the food seemed a tad better and my husband enjoyed some grilled meat (bland but better than what we had experienced so far). That's the extent of good that I can offer about the food. We went to 2 a la carte restaurants (the chinese and the mexican) and the food was good thankfully on those 3 occasions (went to mexican twice). We were thankful that we brought almonds, pringles, and licorice as we would have been hungry a lot. It was our first time to Cuba and may be our last. We may return if we had a first hand positive review on the food and accommodations at a different resort, but would not return to Sol Sirenas Coral. The resort has fabulous potential, but needs massive renovations, updating and a complete overhaul of their buffet food selection. The beach/ocean were breath-takingly beautiful and we loved our time spent there but it isn't enough to make us want to come back without decent food and plumbing. We took a katamaran excursion which was the highlight of our trip. What a fantastic well-organized wonderful day of snorkeling, swimming on a small island beach, eating caribbean lobster and time at a dolphinarium in the ocean. Fantastic! If I came to Cuba solely to drink and be a beach bum, my rating would look different but we came for a romantic getaway with decent food and accommodation - Sol Sirenas Coral sorely disappointed.

"Great beach but a tiny bit old resort and the pool is too small"

   18-06-2017
The beach was great clean. Enought long chair. The beach bar staff was friendly. You had to give a deposit of 15 pesos to get a pool towel at least I had bring my own. The buffet was ok but the meat was to fatty. The 2 restaurants a visited where ok. Italien restaurant and Mexican restaurant. The main pool near the lobby was too small. The bed where not specially comfortable matress not enought hard. The cleaning lady was good at her job. The staff where friendly. I still enjoy my stay but I don't think I would go again.

"Cannot recommend this hotel.... It's the sad truth... (It was National Lampoons Vacation, but in Cuba)"

   11-06-2017
I tried keeping an open mind BECAUSE it's Cuba... but there was just too many things that went wrong. NEGATIVE * Upon arrival we were told our hotel was closed for renovations so we had to stay next door, not a problem but when I book through Melia no one mentioned this to me, ok no big deal. * Over an hour in 1/2 checking in and the front desk was not busy at all * No Maps of the resort, just a black and white print out naming the restaurants and hours of operations * You have to leave a $15.00 deposit per beach towel, (dep returned once you check out) don't loose the paper though with the signature that you deposited your towels. * Building where my room was located was closer to the beach about a 7 minute walk however the building looked like it was abandoned. To best describe it: it looked like a wave hit it 20 years ago and they decided to re-open with no renovations. Again I don't mind a run down building but when you have holes in the walls and a dirty rag on the floor for days collecting a leak in the hallway ceiling it's pretty disgusting. The areas are not well lit. * No bar near the beach * NOW THIS IS THE WORSE...MY ROOM WAS NOT CLEAN. And I had a family suite..which was an upgrade to other rooms in the resort. I don't even want to know how the other rooms were. I can deal with a run down resort, but the room were dirty... Most of the towels were dingy with stains, the ones with the most stains I used them as floor mats for the bathroom. Now the bathroom Oh my lord never have I experienced such a nasty smelly bathroom. I brought with me Lysol spray and Clorox wipes, before heading to the beach I had to clean the bathroom.. The bathroom smelled like a public bathroom at the end of the day if you know what I mean I just don't know where the smell was coming from even with the scrub I gave it the stench was still there. I tried wiping the floors with the Clorox wipes removing the small garbage but the smell remained. I even used their Melia soap in the toilet the smell wouldn't go away. I am convinced that the toilet water is recycled there is no way a bathroom can smell that bad. Thank God we were only there for 2 1/2 days. The lock to our rooms didn't work, the mattress to our bed was flimsy, the balcony didn't open, the walls were dirty. the comforter dirty as well. I wouldn't dare use the comforter instead I used my beach sarong to cover myself. The bathroom had rust every where. The only thing that worked was the safe and the T.V. The faucet you couldn't open it all the way because the water would shoot out in all different directions. The tub was nasty I used my flip flops to shower. Food: was nothing to brag about, all the plates were chipped hard to get napkins and straws. Again I understand this is Cuba but Melia is a Spanish owned hotel they should have certain standards for their hotels. POSITIVE: The beach is beautiful plenty of chairs and no one bothers you. The Artisans are super nice and don't pressure you to buy. I engaged in very nice conversation with them. Super nice people... Unfortunately the negative out ways the positives I will never return to this hotel or recommend it. Save yourself the headache and stay elsewhere...

"Wonderful time! Returning!"

   06-06-2017
Although this was my first vacation, so I have nothing to compare it to, I am still confident in how wonderful this place was! I stayed in the coral section and while the building itself wasn't very impressive it also wasn't offensive and who goes to a resort in cuba to stay indoors anyway!? The sirena section was much nicer so we just walked the couple minutes over to that side most days! The staff are amazing, the beach is beautiful, and there is a bar every 100 meters! Last call at 2am but you can buy beer for your minifridge at the hotel store for after 2am. This place had everything on my check list, bar in the pool, multiple pools, beachfront, bar on the beach, water activities, and the food was wonderful! The buffet was mostly avoided but that's typical, the snack bar burgers and hotdogs were tasty and so were the restaurants I ate at on resort, the cuban restaurant was very yummy! The air conditioning in the rooms which you can control worked REALLY WELL. I am returning to Sol Sirenas in two weeks and am staying in the sirenas section this time which I look forward to comparing!
