Over Sol Sirenas Coral

"Terrible experience"

   26-02-2017
This hotel was TERRIBLE! That includes the food, the quality of the room and the service! The elevator wasn't working and no one seemed keen to help us carry 5 heavy suitcases on the 4th floor through the staircase. They run out of wifi cards for 3 full days. The restaurants in the resort are fully booked well in advance so in reality you only have the buffet option. The door of our room was broken - we only had to push to open. Apparently the washing machine was broken so we had no option of replacing our towels.

"Not a 4 star hotel more like 2 star!"

   26-02-2017
We paid a lot of money for this hotel and we were very disappointed. I would definitely say it is not 4 star more like 2 star! The pictures on their website are very misleading and were probably taken 20 years ago when it was first built. We booked deluxe rooms thinking we would have a bit of luxury for a week but complete opposite when we arrived. One of the rooms the air con was leaking which made the room smell of mould, there was water all over the floor and the telephone wasn't working. Another room you couldn't have a shower as the holder was broken. We spent the next 3 hours trying to sort out decent rooms. We opted for the standard sea view rooms in the main hotel but they were only accessible by 1 lift the other was broken. We still had problems with the standard rooms. The telephone didn't work, there was large gaps between the wall and balcony doors which when it was windy was very disturbing. The toilet was loose at the bottom and leaked from the flush handle. The whole hotel is in total disrepair and needs refurbishing. Jorge the porter was very helpful and the omelette lady at the buffet was very nice. The food is very basic however the a la carte restaurants are worth booking as the food is nicer and the staff give good service. I wouldn't stay here if you have mobility problems or you find it hard to claim stairs as access to most of the hotel has steps or stairs. The beach is lovely but can be hard to get a bed with umbrella. The Jacuzzi in the gym doesn't work in fact we found a lot of the hotel's amenities didn't work or were broken. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone expecting a 4 star holiday!

"A reading week vacation"

   26-02-2017
We just recently stayed at the Coral side of this resort, we had 3 rooms on the 3rd floor in the 1200 section. The front desk workers were always helpful and check in and out were a breeze even on a Saturday. The rooms were very basic something like you would get in a $50. per night motel in Canada, all patio doors would not lock and the showers had very little pressure but always had hot water every time we used it, it is quite a big step to get in and out. The food at all restaurants was surprisingly good, but it was hard to get servers to get you utensils and napkins very often, they just stand and stare and talk to their coworkers. The bars would always run out of some type of alcohol, no beer many times, and the waiters had their favourite customers which they would serve even if you were standing there for 10 minutes. The beach was very good but they could use some newer chairs, it is clean and many palapa trees for shade. The only real bad complaints that I have is hardly ever any toilet paper In the washrooms especially the lobby, and having to put down $15 cuc's for a beach towel and returning it for a refund when you leave, I needed 6 towels and had to put down $90 cuc's , so I could not tip much as I exchanged money for tipping, I wish I knew this before I left home. You will adapt to the resort during your stay and the many flaws but I will not return to this resort, and remember to bring your own beach towels !!!

"Fun time!! Be aware that Maids can be Deceiving"

   26-02-2017
My friend and I just returned from Sol Coral(the side that seemed to have more of the night life with the late night snack bar). The Sirenas side apparently has better rooms and buffet food. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was University reading week so lots of young people were there to have fun. We came to the resort with very low expectations and even considered booking somewhere else because of the reviews on tripadvisor. Thank goodness this resort exceeded our expectations. HOTEL itself was good. The grounds seemed well kept. I didn't notice too much that I would have complained about. A couple places roped off but no construction being done. FOOD wasn't our favourite (we mostly stuck to carbs and stayed away from raw vegetables and chicken just in case). My friend and I didn't get sick while on the trip because we were pretty safe with what we chose to eat. Lower quality food is the case for most resorts in Cuba but you don't go there for the food. THE BEST place to eat for a la carte is THE ORIENTAL. My friend and I went here twice because it was the best meal we had all week. BEACH was beautiful!!!. Only complaint would be the guests putting their cigarette butts out in the sand; they were everywhere. This is a guest issue, not a hotel issue. I'm sure the whole beach is like this at any resort. ANIMATION team was good! We enjoyed dancing on the beach, volleyball, aerobics in the ocean and lobby dance parties. The shows were good too. I wish the hotel would give a list of times activities were happening and where. It took a couple days to know where to go for what. ROOMS were clean, maybe bring your own pillow and not much water pressure in shower in most rooms. MAIDS left us feeling disappointed. There was one issue that really upset my friend and I. We were leaving Saturday at 8am and the maids cleaned our room Friday for the last time. We decided not to drink Friday and just relax and go to bed early so we had lots of time to pack our things in our room. I was all done packing and my friend couldn't find her one shirt. I told her she probably packed it and she was adamant that she didn't. She began searching our room. She found a different shirt tucked behind the dresser behind the TV. Our beds were pressed tight together and in between them and the bed-skirts was the shirt she was looking for rolled up and ONE OF MINE(which had been in my suitcase)! So we tore the place apart.. looking in the pillow cases even. My friend found one more shirt in the closet behind the dresser they have in there. We only had dresses hanging on the right side and the shirt was on the far left. She literally had to pull the dresser from the wall to get to it! That was FOUR hidden shirts... This really disappointed us because we left something for the maids every day. I kind of get why they would try to get away with this (it looks like we misplaced the items and forgot them and then it's theirs for the taking or a MAID IN MANHATTAN moment perhaps?). But it still makes me upset that I couldn't trust them.. we had left money out on dressers from nights before and who knows if they would have taken more during the week. I talked to the front desk just as a warning that this was happening. We were on the fifth floor on the Coral side. I just want to warn others that this is happening and be aware. It's an easy fix if you put everything valuable in the safe and lock up your suitcases everyday so the maids don't have access. I don't like accusing anyone but we never had clothes on our bed and it was very obvious that these items were placed in a way to make it seem like we could have lost them. They probably thought we were a couple of girls that were going to get wasted our last day and do a last minute pack. I probably won't return to this hotel because I always like to go somewhere new but other than the maid situation I would say this hotel was fun, friendly and affordable.

"Good value for the price"

   25-02-2017
My daughter and I took a last minute vacation to Sol Sirenas Coral, For the price this was totally worth it. The room was decent, there was good available at all times and the beach was really what we came for. The service at the hotel needs work. What plagues Cuba is that if you don't tip first there is no urgency to provide service. You can stand in front of the bartender or at the snack bar for literally 10 minutes before anyone will look your way. If you don't speak first then they will just stand back and chat between themselves. I tip very well but from what I can see no one else seems to do the same, they may be waiting for the right service just a guess. The entertainment staff, Lisbey, Rai, Ahmen and the other 2 gentlemen were very good. They were always leading a great party and it seemed especially that the afternoon activities were a hit. The foam party was amazing, the pool ballerinas show was very fun. The check out and check in was seamless, lots of activity in the lobby in the early evenings on both sides of the hotel. We had a room on the Coral side that was very quiet and comfortable. The buffet has lots of choices although but I was missing bacon...lol. There never seemed to be glasses, plates or mugs at any given time not sure why that is. The beach of course is the highlight and truly the reason we chose Cuba. There were lots of chairs, music playing and entertainment. Again the entertainment staff seemed to work around uncontrollable problems such as thorns falling on the sand near the volleyball area they had aqua aerobics, dance lessons, music playing to enjoy. It was also nice to move up to the pool area if you want a little quiet time. Over all this is a decent hotel if you get it for a low price, anything under $1000 pp CAD I feel it a great deal considering this includes everything for your week. A flight alone would cost me $600.
