"Ups and downs."

   24-03-2018
We stayed in a junior suite bungalow for 5 nights for roughly $500 a night. I really wanted La Toubana to be perfect. But it's not. I think La Toubana is surviving as a "premium" hotel choice because there are not very many premium choices. They can get away with fairly expensive prices because there is not a lot of competition. That said, with the current hotel options, I would stay at La Toubana again. The good: The staff is very patient and kind. They are helpful if you ask, and most of them speak very good English. The few who do not speak English were patient with my hand signals. The beach is amazing. Yes, it is small. But it is perfect. Small waves, soft sand, blue water, private. It is a great beach for young kids (mine are almost 2 and 4) but not overrun with kids. The beach was not too crowded, but it is a good idea to reserve the beach couch early in the day or even the evening before if you want to be in the "front row." It's free to reserve. The casual restaurant by the beach has very good food, cold french wine, and is fairly cheap by Guadalupe standards. The bartenders are all smokin hot. The free "continental" breakfast at the main restaurant was also great. It is not "continental" by US standards. It includes eggs and bacon and other hot food. It is served next to the pool, with a beautiful breeze and view. The setup of the junior suite bungalow worked well for our family. (Some other commenters have mentioned that their rooms were updated. Ours was not.) It has a large patio space where we could eat snacks. We could also sit out there late at night while the kids slept inside. There are biting bugs, but it's the Caribbean, so that cannot be helped. The hotel also left 2 small teddy bears in the room, which were a huge hit with our kids when we arrived. The bad: This just is not a luxury hotel. There are a few things the hotel could do, which I don't think would be very expensive, to up the "luxury" feel. The Nespresso coffee pods and the bottled water really should be replaced every day. The bath products should be higher quality and should include conditioner. The rooms should be made up promptly. We were only in the room from 1 pm - 3 pm every day (when our kids were napping). Otherwise, we were at the beach or adventuring. But it seemed the hotel would only service the room during the 2 hour period when we were there. When we arrived at the hotel, around 11 pm, with two exhausted little kids, we had to wait to be checked in. No big deal - it was late and the skeleton crew was there. But our room key did not work - repeatedly. Finally, the staff told us to dead bolt the door and someone would fix it in the morning. When a person finally came to fix it the next day, the fix took about an hour. No one ever apologized or said, here, have a free champagne cocktail while you wait. Later in the stay, the running water in the city was shut off for two days. As a result, the hotel shut off the water completely from 2-6 pm. They dropped off a note at 2 pm explaining the water would be off for 4 hours. A nice, luxury hotel would bring a bottled water or two with the message. The gym needs to be updated.

"lovely to be by the beach"

   19-03-2018
This is a very nice place to read a good book, avoid sand, enjoy a cold drink and good service. However, make sure that you don't pay €25 at the entrance and thereafter downstairs for another €10 for a beach sofa. You have to book in advance for a beach sofa by the sea. Otherwise all was fine.

"Delightful visit"

Toubana is a lovely resort. The views are incredible and the beach area, though small, is lovely. Beach bar has a fun cafe. The formal restaurant serves delicious food albeit a bit pricey. Here are a few small things to know: you can have the hotel arrange for a rental car to be delivered to toubana from the hertz (next door at club med) the price was excellent and it saved us the stress of driving in a strange city at night (no street lights) upon arrival and searching for our hotel. You have to ask for everything at toubana reception. They don’t make helpful suggestions unless you solicit them. But will help if you ask (and if they know). The bungalows do not all have kitchenettes,as advertised. There is a small fridge and a coffee maker. No coffee pods were ever replaced. The bathroom and shower area has no door on it. The towels are small. The small entry alcove has automatic lights so you can’t really read in there at night as the lights go off after five minutes. The bedside reading lights do not provide directed light but rather light up the room. If you do not wish to eat in the restaurant you may order room service from the bar and eat the food in the pool area (or at your bungalow). If you want info in English order the Gwada guide by an English speaking travel writer. $15 and well worth it. It is an ebook. About 65 pages all in English. Here’s her email mailto:guadeloupeguide@gmail.com I found it on one trip advisor forum Oh. And practice your French! There are a few people at the hotel who speak some French but it is mostly French speaking folks who are staying there and working there. People were kind with my franglish. (Much nice than in Paris!) Enjoy!

"Premium pricing, but only average resort"

   05-03-2018
Price paid: 380 euro per night Room: average 3 star room, clean but not special. Bad lightning. Complimentary water only limited to two. Not extra every day. Doors very irritating and entrance with wild west doors. Seaview is not seaview, you can see a bit blue water and sky... Very small pool and very small beach. With limited chairs...you have to come early. Reception: ok but asking for a small thing is costing huge extra, stay for 2 hours longer is 100 euros Breakfast: just average french breakfast which you get in an average paria hotel. No fresh eggs, no fresh orange juice no fresh yoghurt...only croissant and one type baking of bread. Diner: They sell you glasses of wine for 14 euroos where you can not see the bottle. Drops on the glass. Very small portions, very bad tuna, even in the all you can eat sushi its better. I have seen a lot of hotels all over the world, staying in Asia, USA, Europe, for work and for leisure...but this one has no value for money...so leave it for the rich and happy few that want to pay to much for what they get!

"Great Hotel - for the French West Indies"

   24-02-2018
I’m a bit puzzled by the less than enthusiastic reviews for this hotel. It is undoubtedly the best hotel on Guadeloupe (or Martinique for that matter). I thought it was excellent. Apparently, La Toubana is now reaching for its fifth star, and it very much shows. This hotel’s setting is, simply put, stunning. It may be one of the best settings I have seen in a hotel — and I’ve seen a lot of resort hotels. Pictures literally do not do justice to either the hotel or its site. It’s lovely. Likewise, the bungalows are beautiful, and almost laughably spacious when one considers the private outdoor space. I heard that the entire hotel has been renovated this year, which may explain prior negative reviews. The renovations show. We had a sea-view bungalow that was spotless and fresh, with an enormous, furnished patio overlooking the Caribbean. You really couldn’t ask for more. I also found service to be very good - particularly for the French West Indies. At reception, the restaurants, and the pool the hotel eagerly sent out English-speaking employees who were uniformly charming. I recall specifically Gaelle at the restaurant, Judy at reception, and Nicolas at the pool bar. In fact, Nicolas may be the best bartender I have encountered, and I have seen more than a few! A mixologist who is cool, funny, and knows how to drop in and out of conversations - a rare combination. In short, the employees of this hotel try, hard, to give you a great experience, and they generally succeed. My only complaint, is that this hotel, like other French West Indies hotels (excluding, of course, St Barth) has “towel cards.” Why? For some reason very expensive FWI hotels need to track their beach towels as if their guests were thieves, to the inconvenience of those guests. They don’t this in St. Barth (or, in my experience, at any luxury hotel in the English, Spanish, or Portuguese-speaking world). If La Toubana really wants if 5th star, maybe it should take a lesson from the rest of the world. All in all though, a great place! I highly recommend.
