"Peaceful location at the foot of the Volcano"
We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our Costa Rican tour but, unfortunately, our stay did not get off to a good start. Our trip had been booked for almost a year with a bespoke British tour company but, despite this, there was no cabin available for us on the first night and we were shunted into overspill ‘economy’ accommodation. Needless to say, we were not best pleased about the situation! A quick look at Trip Advisor revealed that this was not an isolated occurrence with some poor guests actually being shipped off to alternative hotels! To be fair, we were offered 2 free dinners with wine and a free half day tour in recompense which we accepted in order to draw a line under the matter and to try to get on with enjoying our holiday. It was such a shame that our stay began like this because this is a lovely place to stay, spacious, clean cabins with large bathrooms and two queen size beds situated in lush tropical gardens. It is so quiet and peaceful and we were lucky enough to have fab weather and a magnificent view of the volcano as a result. The staff were friendly and obliging, food not too bad and a two hour ‘happy hour’ helped with the enjoyment of our stay. All in all, we really liked this place but if overbooking is a recurrent problem, the Management need to sort this out or risk no bookings at all!
"Excellent Hotel experiance"
Living at Lomas del Volcan for 2 Nights was fantastic, fantastic hut direct "under" the Volcano with an excellent view, and the Breakfast was top class, and the staff too. All the way through an fantastic experience. Thanks
Lovely individual cabins in lush tropical gardens. Many birds to observe and a view of the volcano, when not in cloud. First class service and even a nature walk out the back. Reception staff very helpful too.
"Lovely rooms and grounds let down a bit by breakfast staff attitude"
I stayed here with a friend for 6 nights during our trip around Costa Rica and, for the most part, it was great. You stay in individual chalets and ours had two double beds and a very large bathroom, and it was all kept very clean and tidy by the maid. The bench on the front patio is not only a lovely place to sit, but is very useful to dump your things on when you arrive back after a day out and are trying to find your key! The back terrace has glass sides so keeps you warm and dry against the rain and, with a table and chairs, is a perfect place for reviewing photos on a laptop in the evening. The grounds are lovely and various creatures wander around. We saw a coati and a (very friendly) ginger cat, as well as numerous birds. The hot tub has a lovely view of the volcano but wasn't particularly hot, quite tepid really, but pleasant nonetheless. The main criticism I have was of the restaurant at breakfast. The choice was a bit limited, especially as I was there for 6 nights, and the staff quite rude. Once I asked for some cereal bowls, as there was none left, and was told "Yes, in a few minutes". I thought maybe it was just a language thing and she would go to fetch them, but no, she proceeded to put cups on all of the empty tables while I stood, for several minutes, by the cereal. This wasn't a one-off episode of rudeness; most of the breakfast staff were not polite. By complete contrast, Jonathan on reception was lovely - friendly and helpful always. The hotel is located about 4km from La Fortuna (nearest town) so, if you aren't part of a tour group or don't want to eat in the hotel's restaurant every night, having a car, as we did, is useful. There are plenty of places to eat before you reach the town and some just outside the entrance to the hotel. However, as there is a 1 km walk down a hill from reception to the hotel's entrance, it may be easier to book a taxi! The hotel is not unique in its distance from town - in fact, most of the hotels we saw were even further away. So overall, a good hotel, with great rooms and grounds and a lovely view of Arenal volcano - on a clear day!
"Beauty, Value, Service!"
The view off the back decks is barely surpassed by the service at this place. The front desk will always call you a taxi and tell you what price it SHOULD be, or send their own transport for you. Housekeeping left towels in delightful animal shapes on our bed, and came very quickly when the ants invaded! (Tip: don't eat on the back deck, the ants find ANY crumbs, especially sweet fruit.) Bungalows are simple, all wood (rather dark inside), with large bathrooms. Rain, rain (it IS a rain forest) sounds enchanting on the roofs. If you like a slightly rural, less-large-resort feel, this is your place. We were really surprised by the large and delicious buffet breakfast included. Watch the local curacow and other colorful birds in open air as you eat.
