"Great start to an awesome vacation"
Lomas del Volcan is an interesting opportunity in the Arenal region. The grounds are immaculate and gorgeous and the volcano looms in the background providing picturesque backdrop to any photographers. The cabins are semi-rustic, but they do have AC...which is nice. The staff is friendly and helpful with good recommendations of restaurants and other destinations in La Fortuna and the surrounding area. The food served at the hotel is great, probably the best gallo pinto we had all week. I recommend this option as a good operating base.
"Loved this resort, but check directly to make sure you actually get a bungalow!!!"
This facility was beautiful and had an amazing view of the volcano when the clouds cleared away. Staff was very friendly, helpful, and most spoke English. The location was nice because it felt peacefully secluded, but still very close to the town (La Fortuna). I was really glad we rented a car, though, because it's about a 40 minute walk to go into town. If you are doing zip lining or other kinds of planned adventures, many of the company's running them offer a free transportation service. Do to this, it is manageable without one, but it would likely be difficult to get to La Fortunate area itself from the main international airport (as it is around 3 hours away). I was afraid the pool and hot tub were going to be overwhelmingly busy, but that wasn't the case at all. I felt like we practically had the facility all to overselves (which, of course, we didn't because I saw other small groups or couples often). I'm not sure if the facility is just built and maintained so well that it avoids overcrowding or if it was just the time of year we chose to go. Either way, it was an amazing change of pace coming from Los Angeles. The one thing I would recommend is to ENSURE YOU ARE ACTUALLY BOOKING ONE OF THE PRIVATE BUNGALOWS. I was under the impression that all the room were, but there were 5 that were not...and we got one of those (seen in attached photo). It sounds like Expedia, Trip Advisor, etc. normally rent those rooms out (hence why the price fluctuates). So if you are paying under $150 for a room, it may not be a bungalow. Contacting the facility directly would be best to ensure you have an actual bungalow. I was also quite disappointed that there happened to be construction nearby the lower set of 5 non-bungalow rooms as I already live next to a construction site in LA. It looks like it may be someone's home or a different facility. However, we weren't in the room much during the day since there are so many other things to do outside in the area. The other bummer was our AC unit was leaking and then they just shut it off completely after we asked them to fix it. Luckily the temperature is nice there so it didn't really matter. My boyfriend and I did not let any of these things ruin our stay, though, because Costa Rica is amazing. The rainforest was right behind our building and we could see the volcano from the front. We had a private front porch and a shared back porch with a table and bench. I did still want to give this place 4 stars because the room we had was still pretty nice, the overall facility was awesome, and I really think our trip would have been absolutely perfect if we had just gotten an actual, normal bungalow room. P.S. The natural sounds of frogs, birds, insects, and other animals (during the day and especially at night) is INCREDIBLE! My boyfriend enjoyed ending our day there by sitting on the back porch, listening to this, and looking for lightning bugs.
"An Oasis Run by Friends"
This was my first trip to Costa Rica. After the flight, I was in the car for 3.5 hours so by the time I arrived at the hotel I was very tired. I was greeted with a very warm smile by a gentleman named Roberto who informed me that he had a surprise for me. After a quick check in process he answered all of my questions and supplied me with a list of activities and prices for the surrounding area. The surprise was, I was placed in the most beautiful cabin at the base of the volcano. The back porch was open with a jacuzzi tub. Every morning, I watched local livestock graze and exotic birds and butterflies gather around the local plant life. Normally in the morning, the volcano was hidden by clouds but by the afternoon the clouds would lift. At night, I fell asleep to the sounds of nature. Breakfast every morning was a perfect selection of local cuisine as well as a few bites from home. The room was beautifully maintained. The grounds including the pool area were well manicured but still managed to appear natural. Each day before I left, reception would inquire as to what I had planned and seem to be eager for details at my return. I may have traveled alone, but the staff made me feel completely comfortable and at home. The only regret I had is that I did not spend my entire vacation there. The next time I go, I am going to ask Roberto for the same room. I have traveled quite a bit and must say that this property is my favorite by far.
"Rustic cabins in the shadow of the volcano"
This resort consists of many cottages, all rustic but very comfortable surrounded by beautiful grounds. The first thing I did when we arrived was take a picture of the majestic volcano which looks as if it's just around the corner (it isn't). I was fortunate as it clouded over quickly and others in our group were not able to get such clear pictures. There are many cottages with trails leading from one to another. Very restful and private. The dining room is under a roof but has no only two outside walls so you feel one with the outdoors. I wish that we could have stayed much longer than we did.
All staff very friendly and helpful. The hotel has its own taxi service which makes getting to local attractions very quick and easy (same price as the other local taxis available in our experience). Buffet breakfast and fresh omelette station were very good, as was the a la carte menu on the one evening we ate at the hotel. Rooms are a good size and feel very private and clean. They are up steep banks though so I would recommend asking for a disabled room if you have any walking issues at all. Fantastic views of the volcano. Pool area very lovely.
