Erg indrukwekkend!
This place was amazing... beautiful, tropical, quiet, and comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. Foods was good although same menu daily. Could walk on the beach about 1/2-1 mile either direction. Ocean water was rough not able to get in really. Pools very nice. Not much else in town about 20-30 minutes to Montezuma or Paquera.
"A fantastic place to unwind"
I first visited Tango Mar in 1993. It was a low key, quiet hotel located on a beautiful beach with few guests, helpful staff and a relaxing atmosphere. Coming back to Costa Rica in 2018, it was great to see Tango Mar was still there and still maintained all the things that make it great. For the size of the property, there are very few guests - maybe 30 to 50 all together on a large set of grounds. Tango Mar is located on its own beautiful beach. We stayed in a deluxe room which was plenty for our needs (and included a huge patio/deck). The vibe of the hotel is definitely low key/romantic. It is not a hotel for for spring break parties or nightlife but is instead geared towards relaxing/unwinding at the beach or pool. Most of the guests we met were european (french, english). There were a few kids but not many. Listing the weaknesses/good things about the hotel... Weaknesses - beds were a bit firm (but we found this true with every Costa Rican hotel). The golf course, while a fun distraction, is disappointing compared with what most golfers are used to. And the tennis courts could use a resurfacing. The surf can also be a bit rough when the tide is high (but that is true across any property in that area) - the surf is fine when the tide is out (and the water is wonderful). On the strengths - well, I already stated it is on a beautiful beach. They also have a full suite of activities such as snorkling, hiking and horseback riding (I would strongly recommend the horseback tour of the area). Their pool is wonderful with an infinity pool (and swim up bar) located just off the beach overlooking the ocean. The restaurant/food is very good compared to hotels in the area as well. Varied and much of the food is from their own gardens/livestock (just don't order the mint/cocoa/coffee sauce for the steak - that is the one menu item that needs to be retired). One of the most relaxing things to do is to just take a nap in the afternoon shade on the hammocks they have strung up between the palm trees on the beach. Finally, the service is very friendly/good. One other item to note is that the hotel is remote. They will provide car service if needed but the nearest town is at least 15 minutes away. Also be aware that the area is a drier jungle (i.e. never saw a snake, few bugs but there are many iguanas, birds, monkeys). Bottom line, if you are looking for a golf or tennis destination, this is not the hotel for you. Nor is it a hotel for a party or nightlife scene. But, if you are looking for a quiet uncrowded spot to relax with a beautiful beach/pool to either unwind or spend a romantic vacation, it is just about perfect.
Unfortunately we only stayed here one night. We had a suite on the ocean besides the pool area. The room was very large with a large bathroom. The only complaint is that I found the mattress very firm. It was nice falling to sleep and waking to the sound of the surf. The lunch was very good and dinner was excellent. We had the Caesar salad which is made right at your your table. We had a wonderful time walking the beach and swimming in the ocean.
Tango Mar was beyond our expectations. We stayed in a Tiki beach suite with a fabulous ocean view. The sound of the surf lulled us to sleep and the chatter of green parrots and other birds woke us up. Morning walks on the golf course gave us a daily show of Red Macaws flying in formation. Howler monkeys could be seen and heard high in the trees and white face monkeys made an appearance near the pool. The staff and the food were top notch. I have never seen a happier group o people at work. Hilde, the owner was quite charming and the staff was very fond of her. The place is secluded but everything we needed was there. I would go back again
"Very nice hotel, but plan ahead your commute logistics !"
This hotel is perfect for a romantic getaway. Not sure if suitable for kids / families as the beach / tides/ currents are a bit dangerous. PROS: the hotel setup allows for privacy at all times, since the rooms are grouped per room type, and the suites are on individual "chalets" or villas. We stayed at the tiki suites which are comfortable for a couple (not sure why they say can accomodate 3 people), comfortable mattress and original arquitecture (polinesian style). equipped with A/C and fan, hot water, very clean. The food at the restaurant is ideal for a fancy dinner and even the breakfast buffet has a decent variety. Beautiful hotel specially if you like to hear the sound of the ocean at all times... :) you can get to see monkeys, parrots, birds also. There are 3 pools which is actually perfect so you dont see pools "too crowded" at any time. I liked the small one (5'4" deep) since it had shadow and a little table near and next to the restaurant :) there is also a wet bar on the big pool too. CONS: getting there. (period) well, let me explain: from any place you are coming, you will need to get to the "ferry" which will transport you and your car from the mainland to the other side of the gulf. Then plan to be there 1 hour ahead of the departure time (on peak season even 1.5hrs) check schedules at navieratambor.com. Now, you need to buy the tickets, BUT leave a driver at the car since they start embarking cars around 30min before departure, or a car might leave and you will need to move over. The ship is well equipped with outdoor areas, AC area, bar on the 3rd floor and convenience store. you will spend navigating around 1.2 hrs. Once you get there you will need waze to drive and not missing the entrance to the hotel (which is a 45 min drive) please note that sign to go to the hotel is very small, right where you need to deviate.. 4x4 not needed, the road is ok and it is until the last 2 kms where you go off road. In summary, from the time you get to the line to get into the ferry up to the time where you get to the hotel... you will spend almost 4 hours ! and viceversa.
