"Mythical Chardonnay"

   22-01-2017
It's our last night at the resort and wanted to put some thoughts down. Pros- Awesome staff! They hands down make up for the resort's short comings. Please tip generously. These guys work really hard! Beautiful grounds that are generally well maintained. No resorts nearby and borders Tulum National Park. Food is average to above average. Great Kids Club! Our kids asked to go to something everyday. Lots of wildlife. Beach was beautiful. Yes there is rocks and seaweed but it is an ocean after all. Cons- Trying to get a glass of Chardonnay was comical. Some restaurants said they didn't have it while others did. I even spoke to the bars manager and she was shocked their best restaurant, Bordeaux, didn't have any...Twice. I went as far as walking 20ft to the bar to get two glasses on my own. Miraculously a bottle appeared in the restaurant. The dreams photo team was extremely annoying and somewhat unsettling taking pictures of our kids. Price of photos was extortionate. $20usd a piece! Are you kidding me!? Check-in was a mixed bag. We had two rooms because of our family of 5. One room was ready at check-in time. However, our second room wasn't ready until 6. I finally had to ask what I would be charged if I were to stay 3 hours past check-out and to be compensated with cash...Needless to say we got our room promptly but I'm still waiting on the cash. House keeping was so so. We always had issue with not enough towels. Come on, two rooms for 5 people and you give us 3 towels, 2 wash clothes, and no hand towels two days in a row? Dress code wasn't enforced. Come on people class it up! My three kids can meet the dress code why can't you? Why can't it be enforced? Charging for cabanas?! Really! Total degredation to the Dreams brand as an upmarket resort. My son turned 6 during our visit and I ordered a chocolate cake for his birthday that was $25. Needless to say we received a coconut cake instead of a chocolate cake which no one would eat. I tried explaining they got the order wrong but since we had already cut into the cake we were out of luck. We've stayed at Now Amber last year and Secrets Huatulco two years ago and have been advocates of the entire resort family but Dreams Tulum gives us pause and we will need to reassess our choice next year.

"Dream in Paradise"

We just got home from Mexico yesterday and this was the second trip my husband and I took. We actually stayed at this same resort in 2013. The staff was so friendly. Everyone that worked there spoke to us in passing even if it was just saying hello. The drinks and food was as amazing as it was before. I would highly recommend this resort. Great service with a smile, not real crowded.

"A Piece of Paradise"

   22-01-2017
My husband and I planned our delayed honeymoon in Tulum and stayed at this hotel from Jan. 1 - 8, 2017. Being from Mexico, I wanted to come to the Riviera Maya for our honeymoon. It has white sand, beautiful beaches, wonderful coral reefs, and the magic of the Mayan ruins. We originally had reserved the Dreams Cancun, but in the end I changed my mind for Tulum looking for a more secluded location and it was the best decision. We really enjoyed our stay; it was fantastic! The service is great, the staff is friendly and often bend over backwards to get whatever you need. Checking-In - When we arrived, a friendly staff member (Esteban) greeted us with hot towels and a glass of wine. As part of your check-in, the hotel will give you a coupon to use towards certain brand bottles of wine or champagne, private dinners or at the spa. They will also give you tips about what activities you could do outside of the hotel. Once you are done with the process, someone will take you to your room and will take care of your luggage. Esteban was really helpful throughout our stay recommending places to go and how to get there. The Tulum Ruins are ten minutes away, so it is easier and cheaper to take a cab from the hotel and hire a tour guide there for $10 dollars than taking a tour for $60 per person. Room - We stayed in an Premium Junior Suite Ocean View Room. It was clean, comfortable, and more spacious than we are used to. This room has a king size bed, a couch, a jacuzzi, and a balcony. It has a 50 inch flat screen tv with some sports channels and a mini fridge. We really enjoyed the room! They cleaned it every day; special thanks to Willi that kept it clean. We had hot water every day. My only complaint is that we only used the jacuzzi one day of our entire stay. In the future, perhaps we may get a Jr Suite Ocean View to save some money. If you have one small child or you really enjoy a jacuzzi, this room would be perfect for you. It was nice to have a view of the ocean, it was sort of a lateral view. The only issue is that they play some soothing music from 9 am until 9 pm and sometimes it gets in the way of hearing the ocean. Also you can hear doors slamming from other guests early in the morning. The Beach - The beach was beautiful! The ocean is turquoise and the sand is beige. The hotel staff cleans it from seaweed every morning around 5 or 6 am. Unlike at other places, there are no hotels next to this one and therefore the beach is secluded. We greatly enjoyed the beach, it was like paradise for us! If you plan to stay there most of the day, be sure to leave early to grab a chair. We woke up late and went there after breakfast around 12 pm and it was very difficult to find a chair. The hotel always offers long beach towels for guests and you can always use one. The friendly Adela served us at the beach; she was always smiling and got us all sorts of drinks. I don't drink alcohol, so I ordered fruity drinks like a virgin pina colada and a strawberry drink with coconut cream and orange juice. They were tasty! My husband frequently ordered margaritas and pina coladas. The only drawback for me is that they didn't have fresh coconuts and my husband complained that the drinks even though tasty, were watered down. It worked better that way; I never saw drunk people at the hotel. Pool area - The pool area was always clean; we saw the pool staff check the cleanliness at least three times a day. Food - There are several restaurants in the hotel, but the food was delicious in all places! You can order room service at any time with more limited options than at the restaurants. If you like eating light, I would recommend trying their Chicken Soup. Seaside Grill - This restaurant was the closest to our room. For breakfast, they offer orange, grapefruit or papaya juice. I grew up eating papaya, but my American husband is not used to it and hates the fruit. We also ordered a plate of fruit and an omelette. The food was delicious but the portions are small. Since it is all you can eat, you can try something else. Please be aware that each restaurant has a different dress code. At Seaside Grill, people are not allowed to go in with a bathing suit or shoeless. You can wear shorts and will need a t-shirt. Flip flops are ok. We watched the staff ask others to put shirts on and my husband once came in with his wet suit and shirt and was asked to put a towel on. For lunch, make sure to try their ceviches and burritos. They were excellent, but make sure to get in before 5 pm. For dinner, they open at 6 or 6:30 pm and they have meat, chicken, or grilled fish options. I don't eat dairy or bread and they replaced some of the sauces that have butter. I ordered a salad, calamari, and grilled fish. My husband ordered steak with chimichurri sauce and ribs. Please make sure to try the Argentinian Alfajor for dessert, my husband loved it! We took two to go. We received excellent service there. World Cafe - If you like buffets and all you can eat, this is where you should go. The place is usually full of families with kid-friendly options such as pizza and sandwiches. For breakfast, they have fruit, cereal, yoghurt, three types of juices (make sure you try their "green juice" made of kiwi and orange juice), waffles, bagels, scrambled eggs, an omelette grill, chilaquiles, refried beans, potatoes, hot cocoa, and some Mexican bread. We were served by the efficient Melva. She made sure we had everything we needed including to go options like plastic cups, plates, and utensils. We ate so much every breakfast, that we often waited until dinner to eat again. Be careful because they close the cafe for breakfast at 11 am. We went there for dinner a couple of times. At the world cafe, you can get a few Mexican options but the menu is international. You can get fish (tilapia and salmon) as well as scallops, jumbo shrimp, calamari, chicken, and meat on the grill. They have delicious scalloped potatoes, ribs, pizza, chicken wings, fish fry, etc. My husband has a sensitive stomach and he never got sick at the hotel; both of us loved the food. A special thanks to Daniel the food manager who does a splendid job at running an efficient restaurant while keeping the food high-quality and tasty. French Restaurant - We went there two times for dinner. It was not my husband's favorite because the portions were small. I ordered the Tuna tartare which was good and I also had the best salmon I've had in months. I asked them to modify their sauce to get rid of the butter and they replaced it with an olive oil and garlic sauce which was awesome! The salmon was accompanied by scalloped potatoes and asparagus. My husband had filet mignon which he liked and chocolate cheesecake for dessert. In the end, they brought me a special dessert which was gluten free and dairy free. I strongly recommend going here! Please make sure you dress up a little bit for this place. Men should wear pants and closed shoes. A special thanks to Abenamar for the excellent service, flexibility with food options, and the recommendation to visit Coba. Italian Restaurant - We went there once; the service was great. Pablo was our server and he was very friendly and helpful. My husband ordered salad, fish soup, pasta, and tiramisu for dessert. He loved it! I ordered salad, fish soup, and salmon. If you are there and you are a soup person, try the fish soup. It is very tasty and light at the same time. They also made a special sauce for me that was butter-free with tomato sauce and olives. It was great! Wherever you go for dinner, you will get the house wine. It is good unless, you are a wine connoisseur. You can always upgrade and pay extra. Spa - Cecilia was very helpful booking my appointments and giving me discounts. I got a massage in a private cabin and waxing. The price was high, almost double what I would pay in the US. Make sure you use all your coupons. The spa also issues daily specials be sure to look for them and take advantage of them by booking your services that same day; if you wait a day, the promotion may expire. Tip - Dreams Tulum has a vacation club and they offer $200 and a free breakfast if you listen to their sales pitch. However, if you are not serious about joining and investing, please save yourself from going. We spent almost four hours with them. They made us a really good offer and we were very tempted to join, but we were dissuaded by all the negative comments in Trip Advisor about their vacation club. It seems like the rules are complicated and users find it difficult to reserve rooms and take advantage of the club. Overall, it was the best trip we've had and we would love to go again. We were scheduled to come back on Saturday Jan. 7th but due to bad weather, the airline agreed to change our ticket for the next day for no extra charge. We were able to negotiate an extra day through our agent, Apple Vacations, for $430 which we did. It was the honeymoon of our dreams.

"Excellent All Around - Phish Riviera Maya 2017"

   22-01-2017
My wife and I travelled from Cornwall, UK to stay at Dreams Tulum for the Phish Riviera Maya 2017 event held at Barcelo Maya resort. Our whole experience was outstanding. All of the transportation, back and forth from the airport and from our resort to the host resort for the event, was on time, safe and comfortable. No complaints at all for all transfers. Dreams is about 30 minutes from Barcelo Maya and our busses to the event arrived before most of the others. We requested a room on an upper floor to have more privacy and had a room with a garden view and nice king size bed. The room was lovely, lots of space with a well appointed bathroom, shower, Jacuzzi bath and double sinks. The water was always hot for showers and the bath - we had 2 a day on most days. The hammock on the balcony was a nice touch that both my wife and I took advantage of. The room also had a decent television and DVD player. We never used the DVD player but nice to have it anyway. In addition, there was a small radio system we used to plug in our iPhones to play music...but we brought our own jack to jack with us for this. Helpful as the cradle on top is for pre-iPhone 5 models. The in room safe was a nice size and easily fit my wife's iPad air and other items...we accidentally left this open on Friday the 13th but nothing was missing. We used the free WiFi which was another nice feature and were using both an iPad and iPhone at the same time no problem. The room was cleaned twice daily with turn down service and yes our minibar was restocked every day, so use this lovely feature. Cleanliness around the hotel was excellent. After reading loads of reviews, we went with very low expectations of the food. Visitors need to remember the food is not of a gourmet standard - at least not as Europeans understand gourmet. However, all of the food we had was surprisingly good. That may have been because we had low expectations. Food is prepared fresh to order in the restaurants and there are many to choose from. We had some lovely fish tacos at the World Cafe on our first night. We also had a very nice meal at the Seaside Grill. The ceviche I had was spicy and delicious. We also had some massive and pretty good burgers at the Poolside grill. We didn't go to most of the evening restaurants as we were at Phish and ate food at the event which was great. Take dress shoes and the appropriate clothing for the evening restaurants - we ran out of time for this. But we did take advantage of the room service which was a nice touch. The room service menu is pretty standard fare. We had the American breakfast delivered each morning and enjoyed this on our balcony with fresh fruit plate. Really nice to not have to hustle down to the buffet for breakfast. We were up quite early and usually ordered before 7 am. Breakfast was with us within 30 minutes each time. We also had the steak, pan fried fish, and club sandwiches from room service. All of the food was good. My wife's only complaint with the food was that most of it wasn't hot but only warm. However, all of the fresh items we had were hot, it was only buffet items that were warm. We made good use of the smoothie bar on a daily basis. The Coco Cafe had excellent espresso, iced coffee, brownies, soft pretzels, sandwiches and other items to eat in or take away - really nice espresso! And I used to run a Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee shop. We weren't involved in any of the activities so can't comment on those things but we met many people who had children there who were having a great time. We did attend a tequila tasting as part of our package which was a great experience and I highly recommend it if you get the chance. We were the only couple sitting at a table set for 16. I guess the other Phish fans at the resort were worn out by Sunday afternoon or not up for 5 shots of tequila before the final show. They missed out as we were fed some lovely food and had a great hour learning about tequila and how to drink it the right way...not like a gringo. Huge thanks to Hermeth, who runs all the restaurants, for this great experience. The drinks at the resort were fine. We stuck mostly to tequila and cerveza. Modelo negro was my choice. They have a few different tequilas on offer so ask and you shall receive - skip the Cuervo and try another one. We were never photographed, nor did anyone try to sell us time-shares. This may have been because we checked in at 8pm, never tried to claim our spa vouchers and didn't hang around the pool very much. The beach was fine and very clean. The resort isn't massive but of a manageable size. The resort's greatest strength is its staff. The staff are absolutely outstanding. Everyone we encountered were full of smiles, olas, good advice and great manners. Really, the staff can't be faulted at all. Friendly, professional, and to be commended for making our stay an amazing one. Dorian was one of our favourites but so many others were a huge help. We took a couple of day excursions to Tulum, Chichen Itza and a Cenote. All well worth it. Great trips out. Chichen was amazing and swimming in the cenote was beautiful and refreshing. There are loads of other attractions in the area so get out of the hotel and have a look around if you're feeling adventurous. Or just chill and enjoy not having to think about anything The CID staff, not part of the resort but the Phish event, were great too. So smooth and cool. Now we need to figure out how to get back again next year. Thank you Dreams Tulum, CID and Phish for a great holiday. My wife and I came home refreshed, relaxed and ready to tackle 2017.

"Good & Bad"

   21-01-2017
I am having the same problem as Mike stated in his review. I've been here 3 days and, while I can get hot water in the sink, I can't get hot water in the shower or the tub. The front desk said the would send someone from maintenance today. When I came back to my room, still no hot water. I called the front desk and they said maintenance said it's as hot as it will get. What?!?! I'm supposed to spend 10 days/9 nights with NO hot shower or bath?!?! I also can't make coffee with my in-room coffee maker. When I arrived it wasn't plugged in and there wasn't a spare outlet for it (it's on a pull out tray built in to the entertainment console). They came and figured out how to plug it in but the cord is so short that now I can't pull the tray out far enough to open the top to put water in it or add the coffee!!!! Now, that being said - the resort is very pretty, the majority of the staff are wonderful, the beach is gorgeous, the beds are comfortable. But I am sort of upset that I can't use the jacuzzi tub or shower unless I want to freeze my bum off. I was really looking forward to relaxing in the tub a few nights and showering after walking on the beach or exploring the area is important - having to take a cold shower isn't fun.
