"Love Mahekal Beach Resort!"
Went to Mahekal as a girls weekend getaway. We loved it so much that we decided to stay an extra night! We stayed in 2 different rooms...ocean view and ocean front. Rooms were clean and spacious although the ocean front room was a bit noisy at night with the waves crashing on the beach so if you are a light sleeper, I would suggest getting another room. Infiniti pool/bar was nice but our favorite was the Itzi bar...shout out to Gerardo and Mariano....great bartenders! Only bad thing was the seaweed on the beach but they were cleaning it up daily. Overall we had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back!
"Amazing stay for a family with small child"
The hotel is in a great location towards the end of 5th Avenue. If you are looking to be around the center of 5th avenue this is a bit out of the way but the beach front location makes up for it. The entire staff was very accommodating from the front desk to all the different restaurants. During our stay several of the staff members attended it to us during breakfast and dinner (we usually ate out for lunch). Rogelio specifically was great. Extremely friendly and was always available to great us whenever we stopped in for breakfast. Would highly recommend for anyone, but especially for family with small children.
"Love Mahekal Beach Resort"
Mahekal Beach resort was everything i expected and more! It was my first visit to Playa Del Carmen and i was a little hesitant due up the travel advisories. But, as to find out there is nothing unsafe about the area. The resort grounds are beautiful, safe and close to town so you can walk to the main drag. The staff is super friendly and always helping you with anything. Yes, there was seeweed on the beach, but not bad enough to not go in the water. Would i come back? Absolutely and i will highly recommend to anyone to stay at this beautiful boutique resort.
"Horrible service. Upselling guests at every turn. Waste of money and vacation time."
From the very start of our stay, we experienced rude and unhelpful staff which unfortunately continued to the end. Upon check in we were told that the King bed we had reserved was merely a "request"- We were given a room with 2 Queen beds and blamed for this because we had booked through Expedia and because they were booked 100% that night. We paid for an ocean view and were given a room that even their own staff agreed was "poor" (Rm 82- showing a faraway sliver of ocean, better seen with binoculars). We were moved to a very nice room (Rm 16) the second night of our stay. It had a spacious deck and lovely view of the ocean. However, even the beautiful room would not offset the many distressing incidents we had at Mahekal. I was a guest in 2010 (when under different management) and had such a positive experience that I decided to return. What a waste of precious vacation time and money. There was a customer- blaming attitude and a lack of accountability at Mahekal: When we switched rooms, we waited hours for our luggage, kept calling, and each time were told it would be 5-10 minutes. When asking to be compensated for having to change rooms, we were not given a straight answer, and after several hours when we asked again, we were told that there were 5 people ahead of us. When we mentioned our coffee was cold, we were told it was because of the milk (though the black coffee was also cold). It was only after we posted a poor review on TripAdvisor were we contacted and offered compensation. This interaction was stressful and we were pressured to take down the review. The concierge and staff at front office were aggressive and dishonest. It is clear that they will say whatever they need to in order to book rooms here.
They were unwilling to compensate us in any way without significant haggling. I was a return customer but will never be returning to Mahekal. It is clear that under new management the resort is focused on aggressively up-selling guests.

Erick, the head of customer service, requested we sign an agreement reflecting how they would compensated. It was a good thing we took a picture of the document, because at check out, our bill reflected none of the compensation we had been offered. Our checkout experience with Manuel was the icing on the cake, inspiring us to re-post the poor review we had previously deleted. Manuel was deceitful, condescending, rude, tried to embarrass us- the grievances are too many to count. Some other specifics: Food- Overpriced ($10 margaritas) and $20 entree of poor quality

Happy hour 2 for 1 drinks- have to be the exact same drink. Find dinner outside of resort. Service- Higher level staff was nasty. Lower level service nice.

Overcrowded beach. The Caribe side of resort can be very loud due to beach club Mamitas. I recommend the Adventura side. However construction noise is also a problem. Rooms- It's a gamble. Much smaller than in previous years. Basic. Room 16 very nice.

Overall extremely disappointed. We will not be returning. Relieved when vacation was over.
"Home away from home."
My family has been coming to this resort since 2005 and we recently just returned from our eighth visit. The reason we keep coming back is mainly the wonderful staff. We are always treated as, not only guests, but as friends. Rogelio remembers us from visit to visit and this time was no different(and we had not visited since 2016). He instantly recognized us the first morning and came running over to shake our hands and chat. We have never experienced this level of care at any other resort we have stayed at. In addition to Rogelio, we always have great times(and laughs) with Alberto(at Itzi pool) and Vicente. Manuel at the front desk is also a gem as are pretty much everyone we encounter at Mahekal. In addition to the great staff, we also love the location, the unique and traditional feel of the resort, and the food is fantastic. Prices for adult beverages have increased moderately since the renovation but we feel they are still reasonable. The rooms are not luxury but what they lack in amenities they make up in charm. Seriously i will take a hammock with ocean view over a TV any day of the year! The WIFI was good and strong. Unfortunately on this trip, the beach was not in the best shape(due to the time of year) but we knew that going in. We enjoyed the pools and pool bar instead. The only negative I have this last visit, was the fact i could not get a Sol or Dos Equis cervesa at Boli's bar....they only serve craft beers. I don't come to Mexico to drink $10 USD beers. Sorry Mahekal management, I had to throw in one negative. Nobody can be perfect, however the Mahekal is pretty dare close. Hasta pronto Mahekal !!
