"Conference/Meeting Port Hurricane Irma - SUCCESS"

Our business hosted a three-day conference at LaPlaya last week filling approximately 30 rooms each night. We had considered moving the conference after Hurricane Irma but decided to support Naples as they rebuild. I was in constant contact with my Sales Manager, Terry Campbell, and Director of Conference Services, Robert Keane, before and after Hurricane Irma. We were kept well informed of the condition of the hotel once or twice times per week. LaPlaya reduced the room rate for all our guest as they were not going to have the full resort experience with the restaurant, bar, fitness center and pools closed. My room was in the Bay Tower on the bay side. I had an amazing view of the sunrise each morning. All amenities you can expect are in the rooms (hairdryer, robe, fully stocked mini bar with snacks too). My co-worker had a room in the Bay Tower but on the gulf side. She did have to see some of the construction at times but the sunset from her room made up for it all. The beach was amazing with more shells than you could imagine. Robert provided our group with several restaurant choices that were within walking distance or a short drive. All staff from the team members that set the room each day, to the valet, to the housekeepers were extremely pleasant and you could tell they were glad to be back to work after being completely closed for several weeks post Hurricane Irma. I look forward to returning to LaPlaya soon to experience the entire resort.

We spent 10 nights at La Playa from 25th August to 5th September this year. We weren't given prior warning by our holiday company, VIRGIN HOLIDAYS, that the hotel was undergoing MAJOR refurbishment work so we were absolutely horrified on our arrival to discover the resulting closure of the main beach tower, Balleen restaurant, Firepit bar, 2 out of 4 pools, with scaffolding and tarpaulin everywhere (including round the area of the 2 pools which did remain open). From 9.00 am to 7.00 pm every day except sunday, the hotel and beach area shook with the sound of multiple pneumatic drills and banging of workmen refurbishing the balconies on the beach side of the main hotel tower which was directly on the beach. We got no peace at all and the noise was so bad at times that we had to leave and get out of the hotel, especially at lunchtime, when the noise was so bad on the beach and round the pool that it was impossible to eat lunch al fresco. VIRGIN HOLIDAYS were as good as useless and were unable to move us to an alternative hotel unless we agreed to move to Orlando or Clearwater, which is not where we wanted to be. The hotel did move us to a marginally better room on a floor above (albeit nearer to building work) but the room smelt of damp and was quite shabby. The whole hotel was definitely in dire need of refurbishment but should not be taking in guests whilst building work of this magnitude is undertaken. The holiday cost us £6300 in total for two rooms including flights - it was supposed to be a memorable long-awaited holiday for us with our daughter who has recently been very ill (heart and kidney transplant, brain tumours and resulting disability) and it was a truly awful experience for her and us. We will never ever travel with VIRGIN HOLIDAYS again and will probably never return to Florida again.

"Port in a storm - Hurricane IRMA 2017"

What a great experience! The hotel was a much needed break on my visit for SW Florida post Hurricane IRMA. I went to the West Coast of Florida and slept in my car for three days, then I found the hotel was open for business. What a Blessing. It was clear to me the staff were busy restoring normal operations to the hotel. I can say with certainty that the staff delivered above par service even while dealing with the aftermath of a Major Hurricane. I can only imagine how nice the service is when they are not cleaning up from a natural disaster. The room was on the top floor overlooking the ocean, the bed was comfortable and the sheets were heavenly. I will be back with my wife for a visit!

"Excellent Service, Wonderful Stay"

We spent our tenth anniversary there and it could not have been better. Every employee was personable, professional, and welcoming. Pool, cabana, food, and massage were all excellent. Room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable.

"Still love this place, aside from the renovation work"

My wife and I stayed at the LaPlaya Resort over Labor Day weekend (Fri-Tues). This was our second visit to LaPlaya, and my second review -- see my first review from our first visit 3 years ago (also over Labor Day weekend). Although this visit wasn't quite as enjoyable as the first one, mainly because of the ongoing renovations, it was still pretty good and we'll be back. I learned about the renovations when I made my reservation, and I was given a special renovation rate, much lower than the last time we stayed here. I requested a room in the Gulf Tower (same as last time), and was told they would put me there but they couldn't guarantee a particular floor, because some of the floors would be closed during renovations. When we checked in, we learned the entire Gulf Tower was closed for renovations (except the second floor, where the lobby and Baleen were temporarily located), and we were given a room in the Beach House next door. Our room in the Beach House was very nice, on the third floor, with a large balcony and nice view of the Gulf (slightly obstructed by palm trees). The bed was comfortable, the AC worked well but was quiet. There was a safe in the closet (initially locked), and as before, the minibar/fridge was too full for us to put our own water in, but we brought a cooler for water. Note that the hotel staff still don't allow you to bring coolers to the beach, claiming they're not allowed (by law enforcement), but as we walked up and down the beach we saw plenty of coolers. We had breakfast at Baleen each morning. You can do the breakfast buffet for $24/pp or order a la carte, which is what we did. The first day (Saturday) we both had the "Crisp Griddled Jalapeno Corn Cakes" eggs benedict, which were a bit disappointing, and we were entertained throughout by the non-stop sound of power tools coming from the floor above us (at least it sounded that way). The next few days we both had bran muffins which were good (a couple of times we tried to order banana muffins but they were out), and there was no significant construction noise while we were there. We also had dinner at Baleen one night, which I'll cover in a separate review (it was very good). We spent each of our 3 full days on the beach, starting at about noon or so. There first day there was construction noise from outside the Gulf Tower so people weren't sitting on that section of the beach for the most part, but there was no noise the other days. Service on the beach, where you raise a flag to request service, was hit and miss (like last time). The food we ordered for lunch was pretty good overall, except for the beef sliders I had the first day, which weren't very tasty and just warm. Check out was fairly smooth though there a couple of hiccups. I hadn't received a copy of the bill overnight on our last night so I requested one after breakfast, and noticed that I had been charged twice for one of our lunches. When I had that corrected at check out I noticed that they had charged that morning's breakfast twice also. Apparently they were having computer issues, but they resolved the billing errors. The renovations were supposed to be completed at the end of September, but I heard from multiple staff members that they would probably take longer. I think the hotel could have done a better job keeping the staff informed about the renovations; as we talked to different staff members, it was clear they were not well informed about what was being done and the current schedule. I look forward to seeing what the new lobby and Baleen restaurant look like after the renovations are completed, though we thought they looked pretty nice before. I hope the hotel didn't suffer too much damage during Irma, which arrived the weekend after we stayed there.
